Dell Joins Microsoft and (PRODUCT) RED in the Fight Against AIDS in Africa

You've probably seen some of the reaction about this in places like Gizmodo, and now I can confirm it. Today, we're making it easy for Dell customers who want to make a difference. Anyone who wants to join us to fight AIDS in Africa can do so by purchasing any of our (PRODUCT) RED-branded PCs. For Dell, this initiative represents an important step in our ongoing commitment to fight the spread of HIV around the globe.

Dell (PRODUCT) RED products are all distinguished by bright red accents and (PRODUCT) RED branding. Each of these systems will come with a special version of Windows Vista Ultimate. Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED includes six unique desktop wallpapers, a screen saver, and two Windows Sidebar gadgets and a (RED)-themed Windows DreamScene.

Dell and Microsoft will make a combined contribution of $50 - 80 depending on the PC purchased to the Global Fund. Dell will contribute $5 for every (PRODUCT) RED printer sold. 100% of the contributed finds will go toward Global Fund-financed grants in Africa. To put it in perspective, the $80 contribution generated by the purchase of the (PRODUCT) RED XPS One with Vista Ultimate  is equivalent to more than six months of life-saving antiretroviral treatment for someone living with AIDS in Africa.

Update 1/24, 10:30am—Here's a cool photo from Davos with Bill Gates, Bono and Michael Dell to celebrate the launch of these products. You can click on it for an enlarged version.

Dell (PRODUCT) RED products are now available for order at www.dell.com/joinred. They will also be available in Best Buy stores throughout the United States by the end of the week. And beginning January 31, these products will be available through Dell in nearly 30 additional countries.

Now for some details about the (PRODUCT) RED systems. Clicking on the images below will give you a larger picture.

XPS One (PRODUCT) RED:

  • This is Dell's all-in-one product that I've blogged about before. Starting price is $1,599—every purchase results in an $80 contribution to The Global Fund.

XPS M1330 (PRODUCT) RED:

  • This is our award-winning sub-four pound notebook that regular Direct2Dell readers are pretty familiar with. Starting price of $1,149—purchase results in a $50 contribution to the Global Fund.

XPS M1530 (PRODUCT) RED:

  • This is the larger 15" version of the XPS M1330. Lots of the same design and feature enhancements with a larger display. Starting price oof $1,149—purchase results in a $50 contribution to the Global Fund.

 Dell 948 All-in-One Printer:

  • The 948 printer integrates fax, scan, copy, print and photo-printing capability together into an easy-to-use package without requiring a connection to a computer. Starting price of $149—purchase results in a $5 contribution to the Global Fund.

Hello, Give something for help those hungry people from Africa or India, I added this blog about them: at http://tinyurl.com/556poc

I am very unhappy with Dell due to the fact that my Dell printer has died, I placed an order for a new Dell printer however I have ink cartridges that I cannot use and "customer service" tells me that I cannot return them because it has been over 21 days, I am a small business owner, and I do not like throwing money away, I purchase my cartridges in advance so that I would have them on hand when I need them. I have been a customer with Dell for more than 5 years and have made many purchases, over the years with Dell I expect some real "customer service", and not just an "I'm Sorry you just have to throw these cartridges away". This kind of so called customer care will cause me to take my business some where else. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER WHEN MY PRINTER WOULD CEASE WORKING AND IF YOU KNOW THAT YOUR EQUIPMENT ONLY HAS A CERTAIN SHELF LIFE THEN THAT SHOULD BE CONVEYED TO THE CUSTOMER. THIS IS YOUR HARDWARE THAT JUST STOPPED WORKING WE DID NOTHING TO THE PRINTER TO CAUSE IT TO MALFUNCTION. I do not condone being wasteful, and NOT BEING ABLE TO RETURN SOME ITEMS BECAUSE OF A NUMBER OF DAYS is wasteful. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH DELL RIGHT NOW AND ESPECIALLY SINCE I JUST SPENT ANOTHER $250.00 FOR A NEW PRINTER. THIS JUST DOES NOT MAKE BUSINESS SENSE FOR ME, NOR DOES IT HELP ME, THE CONSUMER WITH SAVING MONEY. I expect better results from a large company such as Dell. How RED or Green is this?

Utterly pointless. Donate to your charities on your own time. Why clutter a perfectly good website and the products I like with your silly cause. I do not even approve of a lot of the ways these people spend the money they obtain. There are lots of better causes out there.

Participation in ProductRed is a wonderful idea, but how about adding some more choices.  For example, I am in the market for a laptop, but I need a full size keyboard (with the 10key).  Couldn't you offer an Inspiron 17" ProductRed choice?  Or, make ProductRed an option choice on most of your models with graduated amounts going to ProductRed?  I think if the choices were available at fair prices, you would probably see more participation ... I know that I would buy Dell ProductRed instead of shopping around.

Dell customers who want to make a difference donate directly, locally and don't buy Microsoft products. I am truly sad to witness such time, money and effort go to waste.

I am so glad Dell is doing this, and proud to be part of a company that has a soul.  How about doing the same thing for Livestrong, Susan B Komen Breastcancer Foundation, Sierra Club.  I have to tell you, I would buy a Livestrong laptop in a second.

I am ELATED to hear about the partnership with Dell. Dell's involvement in global affairs can truly make a difference and change the lives of those in need AND take the company to new levels!

I think Dell's participation in Product Red is a great idea. I am really disappointed that the only prodect red XPS 1330 comes loaded with minimal memory, hard drive space and warranty length. Once you add such features, the product red version is several hundred dollars more than a comparabily loaded standard XPS 1330, and Dell only donates $50 to product red. Why not donate several hundred dollars or offer one with better features? Windows Vista suggests 2GB memory and the product red only comes with 1 GB. And now you can't get an XPS in red unless you get the product red.
