Ubuntu 7.10 on the XPS M1330, Ubuntu Coming to Customers in Spain

Since we've began offering Ubuntu on some consumer systems, two clear areas of feedback from the IdeaStorm community and Direct2Dell readers have been: offer Ubuntu on more hardware, and offer it worldwide. This Ubuntu-related post is still the third most commented post in Direct2Dell's history-many  of the 654 comments are asking for it in more countries.

Now Ubuntu 7.10 is making it's way to our XPS 1330 laptop and Dell will begin offering Ubuntu in Spain.

Starting today, customers in Germany, United Kingdom, France and now Spain can purchaseUbuntu Linux 7.10 with built-in DVD playback on the XPS 1330n (in addition to the previously-released Inspiron 530n desktop system.  For U.S. customers, you'll have to hold on a week or so.

Update, January 30: As of last night, the XPS M1330 with Ubuntu is now available for customers in the United States at www.dell.com/ubuntu.

Update, February 18: Today we started offering the NVIDIA 8400M GS graphics card as an option for Ubuntu customers.

Ubuntu 7.10 runs great on the XPS M1330. It has more power, more style.  Take a look at the Dell UK Ubuntu website for more details.

Thank you to the Linux community for the support. Your purchases and your commitment is the driving force behind this expansion, and is the key to more in the future.

Dell XPS M1330 screen too small, too narrow.

Italy Italy Italy!!!

it is very nice & very exciting . Im happy. because  I buy a dell computer xps m1330.

Sweden please

Very good !

I  save a little money to buy a dekstop ubuntu dell computer.

Well the XPS M1330 become available again in the UK with Ubuntu 7.10 so I bought one and it is very shiny....

I'll definitely get a XPS... once its available with Ubuntu from Dell Costa Rica (and I am not alone)... From the consumers viewpoint there is no point  Vista (and from Dell's viewpoint you should take a cold hard look at heat, performance, ibernation and other bugs & issues from the latter MS incarnation... as tey take A LOT away from te user exprience of your great hardware)

I have been hearing & seeing Dell is looking into getting rid of XP.  Myself, Wife and a large number of friends have used and owned XP for years. We work for American Express and have been for a very long time (20 Years). I work in technologies infrastructure my wife Senior Programmer. We have owed several Dell's in that period in time (Back through windows first edition 98 period). At AMEX we use XP on our systems as well and have Dell's in our workplace. At night I am a gamer and logged on to BF2 from 5 PM -10 PM, weekends whole days! we own own 2 laptops, 3 Dimensions, and an XPS720 . My wife and I have individual work stations at home so  both are on a majority of the time.  Not to offend you but Vista  is not something I would use at home, at work there is no intention on going to Vista. From what I have read there are blogs out there expressing peoples concerns & feelings.  Mine are to keep XP alive & well.  If you are intending to eliminate  it from your line let the public know so we can purchase backup copies for our own use and  continue BAU, thank you.

Oh.. I already ended buying another laptop brand here in Portugal some months ago because Ubuntu is not available here from Dell.

Now I need to buy another one and seems that will not be a Dell unless will be available in Portugal.

Why is the XPS no longer available in the UK?

Yeah what did happen to the XPS Laptop in the UK?  I was thinking of buying one next month and now they have vanished...

What happen with the xps m1330 in UK? I don't see it anymore in the webpage (since 26th of March and checked it again today on 30th)

... Yeah, what happen with the xps m1330 in UK. I don't see it anymore in the page:

Kudos!

It's very hard to get a laptop without Windows preinstalled. I have two reasons for wanting a computer without windows. Firstly, because I prefer linux. Secondly, I have licences for Windows from an MSDN subscription - so why pay for something I already have?

I don't live in America (Australia actually), but I want you to know I've placed an order for a shiny new XPS to arrive to a friends house, where I'll be picking it up later this month.

I'm not sure of the licence agreements you have with Microsoft, but a great next move would be having Ubuntu an option on all your computers. And of course, a world-wide rollout.

P.S. I had just decided on getting a Toshiba Satellite Pro, but you changed my mind. Partially because it's a good deal, partially because I want to give you (monetary) reason to continue the linux plan (And the positive M1330 reviews didn't hurt).

Also don't be too quick to dismiss the good-will you're earning. It may be hard to measure, but I believe it's very important for a business like yours.

Kind Regards,

Jake Carson

Good!!! But,  What about Colombia? We want Dell laptops with ubuntu. And no only two models, let us choose ubuntu in all your products.

Que bien!!! Y que de Colombia? También queremos portátiles Dell con ubuntu. Y no solo en dos modelos, nos gustaría elegir ubuntu en todos los modelos.

Dell, PLEASE make the Nvidia card available on the M1330N through the USA Member Purchase Program!

This close to buying one | |

Argh!!  I just got my XPS M1330  Ubuntu laptop, which I ordered two days before you guys made the NVIDIA cards available!

Hi !!

Does anyone knows where can a Portuguese guy buy a M1330 ??? Dell Portugal (as always) does not have this model in their lists, and Dell Spain does not deliver (and I dont know if they have the portuguese keyboard) to PORTUGAL.....

Can someone please help us.......??????

Cooool!!

Keep going!! I'm saving money to buy a dekstop ubuntu dell computer with a 24" lcd screen. 800€ something! I can afford it! :-)

What I am still waiting for is an explanation as to why there are such drastic hardware differences between the UK's site and the US's.  Why do people in the UK have the option of a Core 2 Duo processor and those in the states have but one option?  Why can they buy a PC with a larger HD than is available in the states?  Do I have to buy a Windows computer and put Ubuntu on it?  I can get a Windows computer with the hardware I want and remove Windows and install Ubuntu but I would rather buy it with Ubuntu already installed and configured.  Can you please provide more options so that I can sign over my government rebate check to Dell?

I want the xps 1330 :) ... I'm just waiting for ubuntu ...

not sure I can wait long :(

cmon guys!

Bring Dell Ubuntu to Australia please.

There's a big market for Linux laptops in Australia. Many people move away from Windows because of Vista. Most of them would consider Linux if there was a laptop that came pre-installed with Linux. In the end they just convert to Apple. Nothing against Apple but I'm considerably more productive as a developer on Linux. I own a MacBook Pro and am looking to buy a new Linux laptop. This 1330n would be perfect for me. If available in Australia.

Gianfranco Di Mezza

Why don't you sell ubuntu laptop in italy? I love your xps m1330 but I will buy it only with ubuntu. Hatred ms vista and i'm tired of Xp.

Don't forget New Zealand!!!!!

I'm putting off replacing my old laptop until linux laptops are offered here.

Andrea Venturi

ehi dell, did you getit? :-)

we want these Ubuntu Dell in Italy too!

It would be a nice move to provide the "Ubuntu for Dell"   OS  install disk  also for the less  lucky  people   that   bought   the XPS   some months  ago  (like me)...  I'm running "my own" Ubuntu  already from day 1, with only minor annoiances (suspend and hibernate work randomly) but a a Dell supported kit will be valuable anyhow.

And do not forget Italy  !!!

Recently bought Dellbuntu XPS m1330 and not too impressed. Why, oh why provide a default graphics card that can't run compiz?

The default reinstallation image is 4.9GB when the DVDs I have are 4.7 so I had to download the DVD image which was 4.2GB. Why no CD images?

My USB mouse stutters around and I've yet to try the jack to see if sound is transfered from my USB speakers to the headphones (I'm not gonna hold my breath on banking that that works)

And a few days after I purchased the M1330, the price went down 20 pounds. Dell and prices is a lottery!!

I've also recently bought my sister the 6400 (she's just a normal user) yet the wireless card is known to be buggy and doesn't work for her.

I thought the whole point of this Dellbuntu partnership was to provide stuff that works with solid driver support.

That's over a 1000 pounds I've spent on sub-standard merchandise. For those two reasons, I'm not happy and I'm now at the point where I honestly can't recommend Dell, let alone Linux, as a viable alternative to MS and I've used Linux since '99.

 Very Disappointed, Dell.

Tejaswi Kasturi

Why does the "Best" configuration for the M1330 with Vista get $799 off, but there is no equivalent for the M1330n?  If you are looking to get a loaded M1330, like I was, the M1330n is about $700 more expensive than the M1330 because of this (I priced similar machines - not all the Windows machine options are available on the Ubuntu machine) .  This is pretty ridiculous.  Who would buy the Ubuntu machine?   Is Dell serious about this at all?

ThatTallGuy

Not just more systems but more high-end systems.  The XPS is nice but it's got a tiny screen (carefully not mentioned if you enter through the Ubuntu page) and is limited to a 2.2ghz processor (other machines in the same line permit up to 2.8ghz.)

I want Linux because it performs better and is more stable -- I'm not going to buy a low-end box to put it on.

I agree with the last poster -- I'm a Dell fan, have been for a long time, but I've put my foot down about sending more money to Microsoft when I really want to run Linux.  I've got two or three MS licenses already from previous machine purchases; when I make those machines servers they *will* run Linux so those licenses will be freed up and reinstalled (as virtual machines!!) on anything new I get.  So while I'd rather buy a Dell for the quality and the service plan, if Dell can't provide me with high-end Linux-certified machines I'll have to start going elsewhere.  And that'll just make us *both* unhappy. :)

What about a laptop with a larger LCD? I'm looking for something with 15'' or 17'', like Inspiron 1520 or 1720. I didn't buy your Inspiron 6400 because its specs were from the stone age. Now the XPS M1330 specs are fine, but the screen is too small. Is it too difficult to offer Ubuntu with either 1520/1720 with X3100 intel integrated graphics?

 Hi Dell!

Thanks for supporting Ubuntu with your hardware! I'd like to buy a m1330 with Ubuntu to. But i'm dutch... Any time soon in the Netherlands?

No more Inspiron 6400 on the Dell UK website??? Is it gone forever? Will there be something in its place? Is the website just broken? So we are again down to 1 option for a Dell laptop. I want something with at least a 15" screen??? Come on Dell, I want to give my money to you.

Faithful Italian Dell customer since 2001,  I'd really like my next laptop to come with a pre-installed ubuntu distro...

 Dell Italy, Come On!

 @brad:

1) nVidia video works, it's just a website glitch that it's not showing in the configurator.  We're working to get that fixed.

2) wireless 'N' capability does not yet exist for Intel wireless cards under Linux.  Intel is working on that.

3) the fingerprint reader does not presently have support in Ubuntu 7.10.  It is targeted for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy).

XPS with Ubuntu in Italy, please...

What about Italy ?

We are waiting .... anxiously ...

What gives?

1) No NVIDIA option

2) No Wireless 'N'

3) No fingerprint reader

Gee guys, this makes it a much weaker offering that I was expecting.

Sigh.

Brad: As of 2/18, we're offering the NVIDIA 8400M GS graphics card option. I will update this post in a few minutes.

No updates yet on Wireless N and the fingerprint reader.

And just in case you missed it, Ubuntu support for the Inspiron 1525 is coming soon.

when do you plan to make ubuntu for XPS m1210 ??? thanks a lot.

Great news, thanks.

I hope you'll move on to the next step soon which is selling the business-class machines like the Latitudes with Ubuntu as well.

are the discount offers related to the future introduction of an XPS 1330 with Ubuntu on-board?!?

why should we (Italy) pay 1200Euros for the 64GB solid state disk when in the US they can get it for 750$ (500Euros)?!?

Andrea Battisti

Great!!!

We are waiting for Italy too...

How does the international warranty work?

If I buy the XPS from USA or another EU country (France, Spain, Germany, UK ) will the warranty be valid even if I live in Italy?

Thanks!

Where's the CD ? I already have a M1330 and wish to install it if it have specific package than the Ubuntu standard one...

Thanks

Bravo!  In my opinion, this is the single best move Dell could have made for it's Linux lineup:  A high-end portable laptop.  This is the hottest new segment of the laptop market, now being driven even more hotly by the latest Macbook Air offering from Apple.  People are increasingly interested in getting the most powerful computer they can in the smallest package.  The 1330 with a full-size keyboard is perfect.  Buy a nice external monitor for the office and you're ready to go, at the office or on the move.

I'll buy this laptop as soon as the following are true:

 * 64 GB SSD option costs less than $400 extra (waiting for market to drive down price)

 * Wireless 804.11n card available.

Alessio Ferrario

Please, sell Ubuntu laptops also in ITALY !

There are many many linux enthusiasts here!!!

Thank you for your effort towards free software adoption.

Remember, Dell: Sell Ubuntu machines at the same price as with windows.  You keep the difference.

Then Microsoft can't claim we're just going to wipe it and pirate windows like they did in China-- and for people who are of the opinion that Ubuntu is better than windows, like myself, the choice will be a no-brainer.

And Dell, the main thing to remember when getting ubuntu is /not/ that one doesn't get windows.  It's that one /does/ get something /different/.

www.winehq.org

You throw your weight behind WINE, you can really chop the price of windows licenses out of your expenses.  By all means, expand your profit margin.  You deserve it, imo.
Also, offer Ubuntu on all hardware with a note: *some hardware may not yet be supported...  in any case where applicable.  I still know that it /will/ be, and I'd still buy it if half the stuff didn't quite work yet, as long as it's not including an X-Fi or something hopeless like that.

Man, I'm sitting in Taiwan.  When am I going to get my Dell laptop?  Yes, yes, they sell ASUS and things here -- but I want a real computer.  A computer to hold and to love.

Antoine Pairet

 great!!

Bravo!!!

Keep up the good initiatives and bring it to more countries, like Switzerland for instance!!!

 You're on the right track!

Two questions:

When will the Ubuntu 7.10 versions be available in STORES like WalMart and Best Buy?

Will they be the same price as Windows OS units or less than the ones with Windows?

Mexico need to Dell with Ubuntu !!!

 Ubuntu + Dell + RED

It's really nice to see more and more Dell notebooks have been pre-installed with GNU/Linux :) You guys are just great, I just hope to see that in Malaysia soon!

Thanks for listening to Linux users instead of to Microsoft. This is a great deal. I was thinking about buying Sony SZ but now Dell XPS M1330 won it totally. I cannot wait to buy it...

Two weeks since our small office migrated to Linux (13 new laptops, 5 new desktops); 2 PC's running XP Pro.

One more lost opportunity for Dell in Canada. (all our servers are Dell)

DELL, Please do something. Launch Ubuntu based systems in Switzerland as well. As far as I know, Switzerland is far better market as compared to other European countries. I am looking forward to buying your Ubuntu based systems in Switzerland.

Please hurry up. All Ubuntu fans in Switzerland are waiting. Please give us all a good news sometime soon.

 Cheers,
Harish

Sorry for double comment :)

Viva Dell! Guys, you rock!

For those people who want a dell computer with ubuntu in italy:

Maurizio Branca

Now we're waiting for them in Italy too... :-)

Are Dell selling embedded Windows on the M1330n, which is a Ubuntu platform?

If that is not the case then Dell really needs to update the M1330n product information page. Which at the moment is the same page as the standard M1330. The video on this page talks about being able to use Microsoft Office products "without powering up the PC". A phrase which is also inaccurate.

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330_ubuntu?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

First of all, it's great news that Dell supports GNU/Linux on more of their systems, and the XPS M1330 is in my opinion one of the best laptops of its class.

I nevertheless have some questions and suggestions regarding the Linux version of XPS M1330:

Questions:

  • Why are some configurations of the XPS M1330 up to 400€ (!) more expensive with Ubuntu than with Windows Vista Home?
  • Does this laptop have a FireWire (IEEE 1394) port?
  • Is the HDMI port also available and fully functional without dedicated GeForce graphics card (i.e. with X3100 integrated graphics only)?
  • The Ethernet card seems to be just a 10/100 Mbit/s model, am I right?

Suggestions:

  • Every Ubuntu configuration should be cheaper than its appropriate Windows counterpart!
  • Two USB 2.0 ports are insufficient - three should be the minimum. I don't want to have to disconnect my USB-mouse or -keyboard to be able to add an USB-stick.
  • Instead of VGA- I would prefer a DVI-port for external monitors (you should add a DVI->VGA adapter then).
  • Nowadays a Gigabit-Ethernet card should be mandatory.
  • FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) and/or eSATA ports would be icing on the cake. ;-)
  • A backlit keyboard on your laptops would also be cool.

I believe Dell will benefit if they continue to listen to their customer's demand.

Fantastico!!

Spero vengano commercializzati presto anche qui in ITALIA!!!

***************************************

Wonderfull Dell  !!

I hope those laptop will be available soon also here in ITALY!!! ;)

 Happy Linux User

Great Job Dell. Hearty Congratulations.

Please do not forget Switzerland. I want to reward you guys. Hope it will be very very soon. Keep up the hard work. Cheers.

I want that notebook in italy!
:P

Waiting for Italy...

The frustration of Canadians, with the lack of a Dell/Linux-Ubuntu option, is clearly evident here and in other blogs in that there is absolute silence regarding the Canada issue. Is the relationship between Dell USA and Dell Name_Your_Country_Here any different than what Dell has with their representatives in other countries that now have a linux product available? What more can be done to help Dell reach these potential customers?

I ahve looking forward to buying a Ubuntu pre-installed Dell for so long but wasn't impressed with the 1420N at all. It's really great that the 1330 is going to be available. But when are we getting it in US, anyway?

Ubuntu for all country in the world!

Great news. I send you a big Olé for that.

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330_ubuntu?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

I don't wish to seem ungrateful. But there's a problem with the promotional materials for the M1330n. On the video you're tell folks they can access "Microsoft Office" without powering up the PC. Are Dell really selling embedded Microsoft products on a Linux platforms?

The fact is Dell have simply reused the same promotional materials fore the M1330. Which wouldn't be a problem if you didn't mention any Microsoft products.

If the M1330 is so good why can't it be sold on it's own stregths alone? Why does Dell need Microsoft to backup it's product Marketing?

Maybe the M1330 is that good after all?

garbage_collector

Sell these in Poland, please.

Don't forget Ireland. Many many linux advocates here too and you have massive factories here. Why couldn't we also be part of the marketing test bed?

I think this is a great news but I'm waiting for Italy...

I live in Italy, and I'm seriously waiting for Dell's offers for a 15" XPS laptop with Ubuntu or other GNU/Linux distribution.

Several people in the education field would like to buy one. I just can't understand what issues are there for Dell to offer their laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled here in Italy, if any at all.

This is the laptop I've been waiting for. Good move. Slowly you guys are rolling this out, but..

still not available in Australia.....please, there is a good market here for Linux.  It needs commitment and good marketing.

Ubuntu Dell with 8.04 LTS in Australia would be nice to aim for.

Keep it up Dell, just move a little quicker. :)

Good Dell. Thanks for your help to evangelist  Linux. I think whether a user will adopt Linux highly depends on the default OS of his computer. If they don't know Linux and they have no chance to "touch" Linux, it's more difficult for them to pick up the new OS.

I was looking to replace my aging D800 with something more lightweight and there is the answer!

If the beast is available in Canada count me in!

Australia!

Don't forget Australia!

Didier Raboud

Hi ! I advocate for Switzerland availability too!

I advocate for every possible land in the world too (spreading software freedom...) (at least "no OS" versions)!

Best regards, Didier

YouArentMissingMuch
Dell talks about how we want them to add Ubuntu availablity on more hardware, yet from what I've seen, they've *reduced* the hardware its available on since launching it. It was originally available on 3 models, and now its only available on 2. Dell clearly isn't serious about Ubuntu on their computers. I've had many Dells in the past, but their half a-ed effort doesn't show very much. I would have preferred to getting Dells on my last corporate purchase (about 60 laptops) but Dell is too difficult to order Ubuntu from. We ended up buying them from Toshiba instead.

wow...it's a great news indeed!

Montreal Man

Everyone is asking about Canadian availability, I see I m not the only one. What is going on Dell ? are you prejudiced against us? There IS a demand, please do something about it.

 Nice one, Dell!

Even though it's still not available in the Netherlands, I still very much like the move. We already bought some 1330's at my company, and installed Ubuntu on it ourselves. Works great, nice laptop. Of course it's unfortunate we still counted as Vista sales where we actually never used it, but still this will probably mean good driver support and all.

So while I hope you will make it available more general and in more countries, still lots of kudos to slowly moving a rather big company like Dell into a course of more freedom for users, and keep up the good work

I bought a m1330 very recently.  Is there a good resouce for dual booting with media direct support as well?

This is insane. The same laptop with the same hardware configuration is 200 euros more expensive is Linux is chosen instead of Windows... what's going on guys???

 http://images.elotrolado.net/news2/240108211635_1big.jpg

Yay Dell! I am so going to invest more in your stock

Please, make the Ubuntu laptops available in Canada too. Every time you mention Ubuntu, there's a bunch of comments from linux-hungry Canadians.

I was really hoping I'd be able to get an Inspiron 1420 without paying for an OS that I'd never use.

Wonderful!

Awesome!

Thanks!

CA-NA-DA. We're that big country to the north of the US. We use computers here too, and it would be super if Dell would finally release some Linux machines for us to buy. I contacted Dell Canada a while back to inquire about when we'd get some Linux systems here and they weren't even aware that Dell was offering them in *any* market. Get it together guys.

Bruno i also want buy M1330 but look like Dell from Spain don´t send to Portugal..

Why not? If Dell Portugal don´t sell this models...

Why not Dell sell to all Europe like Apple?

asd! xps it's the best *_*, with ubuntu the best best best XD

 What about ITaly?

congratulation!!!! ubuntu,, DELL we are waiting for COLOMBIA TOO!!!!!  WITH LINUX!!!

spanish customer

My sincere congratulations to Dell for the wise decision to keep extending this brave initiative of spearheading the OEMs bringing true choice for home users.

We would like to buy it in Italy too... :(

We really need ubuntu in DUBAI and we also need the right marketing to make it a hit !!!

It may be a good idea to offer 8 and 16GB SSD's.  I wouldn't buy a 64GB  SSD because I don't need anywhere near 64GB, and certainly not at that rate, but an 8GB SSD for a quieter system with less moving parts?

..I think I'd do it.

I don't know what Oz was trying to say...  I will say this; as a potential customer looking to make a very informed high end purchase in ~6 months, I view Dell's commitment to openness, choice, and listening to consumers to be a much needed fresh approach to the problem of giving people what they want.

I have Ubuntu Gutsy running on the Latitude D830; works like a charm.  Getting the audio to work was like two lines of text.  A dell is no longer just a PC.  By offering two operating systems, I believe Dell can seriously hold its own against Apple, and I intend to support that if I can.  $600 saved, $2400 to go...

Wow, I got a M1330 and installed my own Ubuntu on it last year, I believe the tech said at the time I could not receive any Technical support on my system because of it. I guess it has changed now?

awesome news from dell

 however i agree with

@Dinkar

"I think Dell should offer all of its laptops with Linux as option. Today when you try to buy laptop from Dell, you can see options for Operating System showing only Vista or XP. Dell should add Ubuntu to this list. I know this might take long time, but Dell should try to do this to see how much Linux is really in demand.

I personally want to buy 17" laptop but it is not available from Dell. I would be happy if Dell does this."

Dell should add Ubuntu to the list of supported laptops (same costs and support, but able to choose between the OS on the Fly).

Another option would be for $10 or $20 more make them a DUAL-BOOT Vista/Ubuntu system (the ones that come with Vista).

If people choose the DUAL-BOOT option register it as a UBUNTU sale ALSO.

Unfortunately i regret buying a Vista only laptop last december from you guys, If you had the Dual-Boot option i would had mark it.

I didn't purchase the Ubuntu one because your 3 year guarantee was way more expensive than the Vista one.... :(

 @Ants:

Thanks for the information!

Being able to order in the UK is a good workaround.

Begs one remaining question: What keyboard layouts are available? (UK only?)

Can i order one in Germany and have it shipped to Poland?

How come you can sell these laptops in Spain, but not in Portugal? Or in France, but not in Italy, or Belgium? Or in Germany, but in Denmark or Austria?!

Geez, this is the EU!! It's an open market! For Christ sake, almost all these countries share the same currency!

What or who is stopping you from selling these things throughout the EU?
It can only be a political decision...

This is from someone who's really, really, REALLY interested in one of these things...but lives in Portugal.

PS: i could order it from Spain, but then i would get a laptop with a Spanish keyboard...

There's actually a blog about Dell?

Matteo Nardi

Waiting for  Italy :(

Great news... Now could the prize be adjusted as well?

With the same configuration, you can get a windows vista dell M1330 for 200 euros less than the ubuntu version, at least on the french store... See http://pastebin.com/m465d8024 for instance.

Hi

Is there a plan to selling DELL/Ubuntu laptops in Switzerland too ?

cheers

In which language(s) will laptops sent to Spanish Kingdom be available?  Will laptops sold in Catalan-speaking territory (11 million population) be available in Catalan?

It's sad that I even have to ask this; but with Microsoft it was simply overlooked: as if, Catalan doesn't even exist for M$.  I hope it's not the same for Dell...

what is great? that a ubuntu-laptop with the same specs as the windows-model actually costs more??? configure the inspiron 6400n as the windows-version and it cost you: 689,- € the windows-version will cost 649,- and it ships with a lot more software including a diagnosis cd! sorry, this is nothing but hypocrisy! dell's linux laptops are just marketing -- i still save money by buying the same laptop with windows and installing linux afterwards (and remember: unbuntu is free -- you have just download it)! additionally the devices dell offers with ubuntu are rather poor -- only two models with ridiculous screen resolutions. what kind of "linux compatibility" does a screen with a decent resolution actually require?

What about Canada ? Instead of paying up the tax to Microsoft, I am paying crazy customs fees everytime I have to buy something through a proxy in the US...

Now that Dell is taking Ubuntu seriously as an economic opportunity, I believe that when Ubuntu 8.04 is released Dell will begin heavily customizing it just like it does with Windows such as adding its own desktop background and setting up its own repository and such.

I have two housemates who ended up buying the Dell XPS after labouring over which would support linux better (it was vs a Thinkpad) and so just before Christmas they bought them... with Vista. Both wiped Vista on the day it came and installed Ubuntu. Fantastic equipment but sadly they counted as a Vista sale as even on the Chat2Dell they were told that their warranty would be void if they wiped Vista and anything went wrong. Quite unfortunate as the guy never mentioned the Ubuntu was coming to the XPS at the time. I'm waiting on the X300 to see how its Linux support is but the XPS is looking tempting with the SSD. All in all, Thanks Dell. You've done a fantastic thing - If you guys had Ubuntu as an option on *all* systems I think you'd do just great. So many unhappy Vista users! :D

waiting for the preloaded Ubuntu to be available in India

@corvo, I've just ordered an XPS and they would deliver to the Netherlands for an extra 35 pounds airmail (I'm English but currently living in the Netherlands)

Am looking forward to receiving it.

Please, do the same in Chile please!!!!

Thanks from Spain. I love it. Definitely a buyer here ;)

For anyone else this is a good news, but not for italian GNU/Linux people :-(

What about other EU countries like Malta, for instance? I'd definitely buy a DELL XPS M1330 if I know it works 100%  with Linux. (Not just Ubuntu, mind).

Umm, ok, so I'm not buying from the UK, but why does an XPS m1330 with Ubuntu cost GBP350 more than the same configuration sold with the Vista (base version)?

I hope the price difference is the other way around when it gets to Australia!

Also, the note you have about the Windows operating system, to a user who has never heard fo Ubuntu, would make it sound like you don't get any oeprating system whatsoever.

"The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Windows® operating system. If you are here by mistake and you are looking for a Dell PC with Windows®, please use the following link.

Yes please Dell, make the XPS m1330 with Ubuntu available in Australia.

Dell, how difficult it is logistically for you to offer Ubuntu as an option on all your system? There isn't much range available currently, at least in comparison to your Windows offerings. By opening it up and giving people the choice on all machines, giving them an informed choice with information about both OS's you'll surely expand your own sales?

Iam waiting for my Dell XPS M 1330.It is coming with Vista which is the standard option here in India. I would have waited to buy XPS M1330 with Ubuntu 7.10, if I had known Dell had launced it elsewhere. I have been using Dell Latitude C640 with Ubuntu 7.10 and it is excellent. Its a pity , I am missing a great combination.

I've bought the XPS M1330 last year and as soon as 7.10 came out I made the switch from Vista.

Why, Dell, won't you just introduce Linux worldwide? Where's Ubuntu in The Netherlands?

themacmeister

This is great news. I will soon be updating my Dell Optiplex, and with your aggressive pricing, and great offers, and now LINUX, I will certainly stay with Dell in the future.

PS. Keep offering WinXP on cheaper hardware - That will also keep me buying Dell!

I am waiting for my XPS M1330. Its coming with Vista. There was no option for Ubuntu when it was ordered last week. Its a pity, If I had known earlier, I would have waited till Dell started with Ubuntu 7.10 on XPS M1330 in India. I am presently using Dell Latitude C640 with Ubuntu 7.10 which is excellent.

Bring it to Australia please!

Obviously France, Spain, and Germany are bigger markets than Canada... yeah right. I too just bought an m1330 loaded with the bloated Vista pile just to wipe it off later and install Ubuntu as there wasn't a choice on the OS.

Spike: Sorry we didn't get Ubuntu in Canada in time for you to buy your XPS M1330, but more news will be coming soon.

Finally, the m1330 gets Ubuntu!

Too bad I don't live in Spain. Still hoping that Dell won't forget the Netherlands.

Problem is, I want to buy a laptop sometime soon.

...is it possible that I buy a Dell in the UK (or Germany) and have it shipped to the Netherlands?

Please, sell Ubuntu laptops also in ITALY !

There are many many linux enthusiasts here!!!

Thank you for your effort towards free software adoption.

I just check the Dell Malaysia site and did not see the Ubuntu options on the XPS1330. When will it available for the Malaysia market ?

You should have launched it before Christmas, when I had to buy one with Windows Vista :-(

When will you be releasing laptops with Ubuntu in Australia?

I have been waiting some time for this to purchase a laptop with Linux and legal DVD video support.

If this doesn't happen soon I'll consider getting a Thinkpad instead, which would be a lost sale for Dell.

There is certainly a market for Linux laptops in Australia. The Asus eeepc sold out across the country when it was release and still has strong sales.

It is my understanding that Linux is much more popular in Australia than, for example, the USA.

This news is really good for Linux users.

I think Dell should offer all of its laptops with Linux as option.

I would be happy if Dell does this.

But why the hack do you Recommend Windows Vista on the webpage selling Ubuntu laptop ????

Can't understand why you shoot your selves.  As long as you sell that Vista, I'll avoid buying dell.

There System76, Zonbu and others that need my support.

Thanks for the information. You really saved me. I really want an Ubuntu laptop, but your current offering is way to large for me to carry around. I had ordered a Thinkpad and was going to install Ubuntu myself. After reading your post I canceled the order.

Waiting to place my order with you now.

This is great news, thanks for everything. Really.

Now can someone explain why, on the french store, the XPS is shipped with Ubuntu 7.10 while the other systems are stilled shipped with the 7.04 flavor ?

Hooray for Dell! Spain is different xD.

What about Canada?  My main motivation for buying a laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled is to avoid giving money to Microsoft without getting an overpriced or inferior laptop for the "privilege" of not directly funding them. As such, knowing that there are Linux drivers for the hardware isn't quite enough to convince me to buy one with Windows pre-installed.

Since I live in Canada, it seems to me that there's no way for me to buy a comparable machine from Dell without funding Microsoft, which is ridiculous.

Dhanik Modi

About freaking time. I'll finally save money on the Windows OS coz i get it through my college's software distribution program.

Still no availability information for Canada?

Thank you from Spain!!! ;-)

Nice one, Dell. Will be getting one tomorrow. But why from the low end to the high end and nothing in between?

 Ole oleeeeeeeeeeeee...!!

ke bieeeeeeennn ke biiieeeeeeeeeennn!!

Ya era horaaa..!!

Ya no hay excusa para comprarme un portati!L

Yujuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...!!!!

Excellent news. Thanks for expanding your Linux support.

BTW, several of these links are broken.

I'm impressed - y'all really do seem to be listening to your customers.  I'm looking forward to getting an m1330 with Ubuntu.

ps the link to the Dell Ubuntu site isn't formatted correctly.

Thanks alot Dell, just a few niggles on the website though:

On the product details page it stil advertised as Ubuntu 7.04

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330_ubuntu?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

On the customize & buy page it says XPS 1530.

There are also 1 or two other references to Windows which could be a bit confusing e.g. on the product details->design tab under instant gratification

"With just a push of a button, you’re in control. Use Dell’s exclusive MediaDirect with Instant Office to instantly access select Office applications, photos, videos, music and more without booting Windows"

How does this work under Ubuntu?

Also, is the inspiron still on Ubuntu 7.04?

AFAIR, Dell started shipping Ubuntu on May, and up to today 5 Countries only can buy PCs with Ubuntu preinstalled.

I really can't figure out why selling these products is not possible in other places and why you are expanding this possibility so slowly.

I live in Italy, and I really would like to buy a shining new Dell laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled. I hope Italy (and many other Countries) will reach this Olympus ASAP.

Awesome!!!
Really outstanding!!!

Now, I'm thinking about buy another Dell!!

Very well done. You're in the path.
