Shortage of Brown Zunes

Yes, you read that headline correctly.

Last month, we offered the 30GB verson of the brown Zune MP3 player for $99. Lots of customers ordered them. So many, in fact that we can not fulfill all the orders that came in. Once we realized it, we made some changes in terms of the shipping lead times on orders that came in. Those lead times adjustments are driving discussions at Dell Community Forum threads like this one and this one.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused any of you. Here's the deal: we don't have enough brown Zunes to fulfill orders. For those orders, we will substitute a different color Zune. In terms of functionality, it will be identical to what you ordered—the only difference will be the color.

Any affected customer who wishes to return the 30GB Zune can do so any time within 30 days from receiving the product by calling Customer Care at 1-800-624-9896. We will set up the return and will refund the full purchase price (plus tax) to your original form of payment.

Update, 12/7—Unfortunately, due to an error, a Sunday circular on December 9, 2007 will include an ad for a brown 30GB Zune for $99.99. We do not have any more of these products to ship. Our apologies in advance for the inconvenience.

As an alternative, we will offer a 4GB SanDisk Sansa Connect for $89. There are some diffences between it and the 30GB Zune: the Sansa Connect is a flash-based player vs. the hard drive-based Zune. That means it's smaller capacity, and it does not have FM radio functionality that the Zune does. The Sansa does have Wi-Fi capability and includes a built-in speaker. See SanDisk's Sansa Connect page for more details.

I ordered a brown 30 GB Zune player, priced at $99.99 on December 15, 2007 . I was told they had no more brown ones at that time and it would be 6 weeks to recieve one. I told the sales rep that, "that would be fine". Two weeks later it came in and it was black, no big deal. I never looked at the shipping papers I just filed them away in case I had any problems with the Zune. Last week while balancing my check book I noticed I was charged $195 for the Zune. I called customer service and got no where. I got to talk to people in India and not the US. They did nothing for me except to offer to take it back. I wanted the agreed upon price not the price I could pay locally for one. I have spent about a hundred hours loading music on my Zune and want to keep it but being ripped off by a multibillion dollar company makes me extremely mad. There is no excuse for the poor service when Dell is at fault for mis-printing the sale price. Dell senior officials you need to wake up. I work for the federal government of the United States and all of our products are Dell. If I can persuade them to switch I will, this is the worst service and biggest ripoff I have ever dealt with.

After a lot of internet searching and trial and error, I got my Zune working.  No thanks to Dell and their so called customer service.  Did lionel stop reading this blod or is he just ignoring a lot of unsatisfied customers?  Dell has really dropped the ball on this one for a lot of people.   I hope you all get your Zunes soon.

Good luck to every and Merry Christmas.

Still Waiting for PINK Zune

Still waiting for my PINK Zune --- Order placed on 11/26 when website stated Usually Ships in 1-2 DAYS.  Why are the brown orders being filled with other colors --- when the people who ordered another color are still waiting and we paid double the cost of the brown sale price!!!

Still waiting for another update from Todd or Lionel --- It is now Tuesday 12/18 and my order still says "not shipped".

I ordered a pink 30 Gb Zune on 12/5.  I saw the 1-2 week time to ship, but I figured even then that I would still receive it in time for Christmas.    In view the order status, I am seeing a ship date of 12/20 and an estimated delivery date of 12/25 (yeah, right...who is going to deliver on Christmas) to 12/27.

Which means I am going to be reduced to showing my wife a picture of her Christmas present instead of giving her the real thing.

Thanks a lot, Dell.

Silly Rabbit
I'm in the same boat as many others.  I ordered this as a gift on 11/24, got a 11/27 ship date, then delayed till 12/24.  Called and was told the player would ship 12/17 and the sports band would ship on 12/24.  After seeing this annoucement, I called again and was told that the sports band had shipped, but the player was OOS and I should cancel because the order would not be filled.  So, I directed the her to this site.  After reading the annoucement, she got her manager to approve a new order for a white zune for the same price.  To do this she had to cancel my original order.  With all the delays and color changing I was very very leary of following her advice.  She insisted that white was in stock and would ship in 3-5 days, all other colors were delayed past Christmas.  I checked the dell store and white was showing as in stock - ships in 3-5 days.  Well, it's been 5 days and my ship date is 12/26.  I imagine I've lost the priority of my 11/24 order and fear I will be overlooked because my new order date is only a week old.   What I don't understand is, white is available all over the place, but for some reason, Dell can't fullfill my order as agreed??  I understand the situation with the brown one, and although it shouldn't have happened, it appears Dell is trying to correct the problem.  But in my case, it looks like the effort to correct the problem has created a new one for me.  Now, white is not even listed in the dell store. Hopefully, this is corrected quickly and shipped by Fed Ex.

I spent the afternoon online chatting with a CSR who was of no help to me.  She told me that since I ordered Brown and that color has been discontinued, she could offer no replacement, even though I already received a white Zune as a substitute.  I tried to explain that color really didn't matter, I just want to have a working unit to give to my kid on Christmas.  She said there was nothing she could do and that they could not/would not substitute a different color as a replacement.

How can this be?  I already have a different color than what I ordered.  I'm not real happy at the momoent, Christmas is 8 days away and now Dell tells me I won't ever get a replacement.  I'm not sure what to do or what I can do.

Ordered 3 Brown Zune 30 on Black Friday.  Like most others, I got 3 white replacements on Monday.  I was very happy to have the Zunes and the white was nice.  Unfortunately, one was DOA.  I called Dell Customer Support and the agent said that they would expedite a replacement out to me.  Again, very happy.

I did not receive the promised confirmation email from that call so I called the next day just to follow up and make sure that everything was ok.  The CSR told me that my replacement order was cancelled,  No one called to tell me that, I was not happy at this time.  He started to look in to it and stated that they could substitute a different color, I said "great", then he says they are out of stock and do not have anything to send me.

Now, I'm 9 days away from Christmas and 2 of my kids will get nice functional Zunes and I have to pick which kid gets the "brick".  I'm not looking forward to this.

I have no idea when I might get the replacement and I'm not happy right now.  Need help Dell.

DISSAPOINTED-In-DELL

Great --- After reading some posts on dell forums I have learned that dell is shipping different colors to those who purchased the brown zune.  Is that why there is not enough Pink zunes to fill my order??  I guess I should have ordered a brown zune to receive a pink zune !!!!!  LOL!!! If I only knew --- so congrats to those who ordered the brown --- looks like YOUR kids will be happy this Christmas!  Hope DHL doesn't loose your delivery!  (a good way for dell to delay shipment once again!)  Yes, Lionel, please call me -- I have included my email address this time.

I Ordered mine one on 11/23 with a ship date of 11/27. On 11/27 I recieved an email stating shipping was delayed till 12/17. They did manage to ship it earlier, but, after 3 days with no delivery, DHL lost my package. How convenient! So, DHL informs me that it is my responsibility to contact Dell and inform that that the zune was lost in shipping. That is just great customer service.  So, I get it reordered with next day shipping....2 days later, Dell emails me, they are just cancelling my order and refunding my money!  Forget ME..... Thank you Dell....

Jason and others: Working on an update post... I hope to publish it soon.

I got hosed by Dell. I ordered on Black Friday at 9 am. Brown Zunes showed to be "In Stock" on Dell's website. I can only assume Dell's definition of "In Stock" means there is one available somewhere on the planet. The Customer "Service" Rep I spoke with washed Dell's hands of it by stating my order has been submitted to the manufacturer, there is nothing more Dell can do. Ho Ho Ho.... Merry Christmas.

Do your Christmas shopping somwhere other than Dell.

I ordered the Brown Zune on 11/23, and I actually got it shipped on 12/8.  Of course DHL has lost the order and had suggeted I contact Dell to have them ship another.  Why do I think that will not go over well?

Have some cheese with that whine people
I ordered 2 brown zunes a couple of weeks ago, Dell said they would ship on the 10th.  They both shipped on the 9th and I got 2 white zunes today (the 12th).  Good job Dell!  Everyone else can spend triple the money and go buy an Ipod.

Radioshack did something similar for black friday. We sold the brown zune for $99, and much to my surprise we sold them faster than we sold anything else. All day long I had people upset that we had sold out of an obselete and discontinued product. As for dell I'm willing to bet they had the same reaction I did, and were caught off guard by the demand, Especially considering the lack luster sales of the Zune last year. I also have to agree with "deal or no deal", well in the sense that I attempted to order my brother a pentax camera a couple of weeks ago, the site said "usually ships in 24 hours". After I placed the order and had my dell card charged, I got an invoice that stated I'd get the camera in FEBRUARY! Needless to say I immediately called india and canceled the sale, the rep was very apologetic and did so without hesitation. I'm still a dell fan because of its embrace of Ubuntu, but they need to recitfy what shipping times are.

DEAL or NO DEAL

Great offers from Dell, but they can not deliver ---- What is the sense of having items on a webpage with GREAT DEALS --- and a "Usually Ships" 1-2 DAYS --- then turn around and not be able to fulfill ???  Sounds like false advertising to me --- Isn't there a law against that???

DISSAPPOINTED-In-DELL

on 11/26 (Cyber Monday) Dell had a really good deal -- any purchases made using paypal, receive 20% off !!!  Well -- I ordered a Pink Zune 30gb and the "USUALLY SHIPS" info stated 1-2 DAYS.  Now --- 15 days later, I find out that they are out of stock and have no clue when a new shipment from Microsoft will come in --- Estimated ship date is the 18th, but they can not gaurentee that it will arrive by Christmas.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem????   Dell never offered me another color, so they probably have issues will all colors at this point, yet the product is still on their website!!  Hope you all have better luck with this vendor ---

Disappointed: Sorry for not responding to your comment until now. I'm happy to have someone contact you. Before I can do that, we'll need a way to contact you.

Can I ask you to submit another comment, and to complete the e-mail field? It won't be published... From there, I will have someone contact you. Sorry for the inconvenience.

your right, they are not offering anything!!! I too placed the same order with no results in sight

your CSRs on the 800 number are not honoring the color swap, what is the right process to have our orders fulfilled

barrmulio: We will ship your order when we can get it processed. Unfortunately, there's not a way for you to request a specific color.

your CSRs are not honoring this offer, i have spoken to over 12 people and noone is willing to exchange or cancel my offer, please provide some clarification on how to get a different color

@sonya ybarra

c'mon, it's not that bad'a deal, they really did fail by not having the supply in stock, that's true, but still, u could imagine this could happen to any business. There's such a great demand that the goods couldn't be delivered, but Dell's making up for it in this way, and that's probably the most gracious of them all, admitting the problem and patching as much as possible. I could imagine stores that would do worse...

I was dissappointed that you did not have this product. This was my first experience shopping with Dell and it was a dissapointment.
