More on the PCD5SRVC.PKMS Dell Support Center Fix

Since I blogged about the fix for the PCD5SRVC.PKMS issue last weekend, I'm still seeing some comments from folks like Barry Bornstein and T. Catt asking for more clarification.

The easiest way is to do this:

  • Unistall your current version of Dell Support Center (more details on how to do this is below)
  • Dowload the latest version here
  • Run the installation of the new version

To uninstall Dell Support Center, you need to go to the Control Panel. If you're running Windows XP, you need to look for an icon that says Add/Remove Programs. In Vista, look in the Programs section to click on Uninstall a program

Here's a shot of what my Uninstall screen looks like in Vista:

From there, highlight Dell Support Center, and click Uninstall. Then, if you choose you can run the install on the new version of Dell Support Center, which you can download here.

If you still have problems with Dell Support Center after going through this process, I apologize for the frustration. Please submit a comment after you've entered your e-mail address in that field. From there, I can have someone contact you directly.

I get an uninstaller error on login / A previous version already installed error when I try to down load 2.0 - which is installed but no functionalityand add remove doesn't work/ I got tired of a lack of support - so I renamed the .exe file with a different name dell support.exe is now dell support.exe.xyz and then ran Registery Mechanic and that stopped the dell_support_center is installing error messages. I can live without DSC but the error messages - which - kept recurring on startup and during use were a major pain - Good luck finding a solution Dell - J

To easily uninstall DSC when it says it is being used by another program or service is to stop the process in Task Manager/Processes , then it can be removed Ok .

The problem with DSC seems to be there for ages now. Still there is no solution from DELL. Is it time for every one to move on? I think the corner shop vendors give better sevice than DELL.

I see that several people have the same problrm with Dell Support Center where the message "Please wait while Dell Support Center setup process completes," but it never completes! Is there a fix to this problem? I have uninstalled and reinstalled this program over a dozen times and still haven't gotten past this point.

Dell support center does not display any information like service tag about the system. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it several times. I did a clean boot and have tried installing it. still the same. Iam not sure what is causing this problem. Do any one have any idea about this.

Further to my comments on May 23rd, Windows Defender no longer asks me about PCD5SRVC.pkms, however it appears that the damage is done...blue screen at start-up and a computer that is now probably at least 5 times slower than before all these DSC complications arose. Will be uninstalling...

Sam - Nottingham

How annoying has that been - having that popping up everytime you bootup.  Thanks for the tip about un-installing dell support centre.  Working again brill now.  Thanks again.  Sam

I am getting the same issue as Dave (23-05-08) with Windows Defender.....Very Annoying!!!

Anyone got any ideas as to why Windows Defender wants to check on PCD5SRVC.PKMS EVERY time I boot up?

I am having the same issue as Dave and this is getting annoying.. The only difference is that My computer does it about every 4 hours, regardless if it is restarted, Windows Defender keeps asking about PCD5SRVC.pkms...  I have installed the new version, but the problem persists.. Even more than before..

I have successfully removed the old DSC and downloaded the new one but why does Windows Defender keep asking me if I want to allow PCD5SRVC.PKMS. It makes no difference if I allow or deny access, each time I switch on my computer Windows Defender asks me the same question.

hi have same problem PLEASE WAIT WHILE SUPPORT CENTER SETUP PROCESS COMPLETES is there a fix or is it dell website not working

Well, there isn't an "Uninstall" but rather a "Remove" button when I click on the DELL SUPPORT CENTER in Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.  Clicking this does no good, as I get the same error message about a packet package not been accessible.  I'm going to try using Your Uninstaller 2008 on this problem and see what it can do for me.  This is so annoying that you cannot simply delete a DELL Support product or at the very least upgrade to the newest version over the existing one.

I am running Windows XP Professional with a Dell Dimension 8250 Series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.40 GHz.

4/6/08-Attempted to run PC Checkup, but Dell Support Center stated parts of PC Checkup Function not present and stated to Uninstall Dell Support Center, then reinstall.

Uninstalled Dell Support Center.

Reinstalled Dell Support Center, ran PC Checkup: all functions “passed” until got to Optimize Startup functions, just stopped and continued to run for about 10 min. I ended task, re-ran PC Checkup and all functions again “passed” until I got to Optimized startup functions again and the checkup became sluggish, but I let it run until it finally finished and the function “passed”.  I might add that running the pc Checkup function of Dell Support also disconnected my printer function (HP Officejet J5750 All-in-one), which I still have not been able to reinstall.

Ever since running the PC Checkup, Dell Support Center has lengthened my startup and shutdown procedure for my pc to the point it is non functional for about 10-15 minutes for each startup and shutdown procedure. At startup I get my ususal Dell screen, then Windows screen, then a Blank screen for 10-15 minutes while Dell Support Center goes through its process of loading and establishing connections, etc.—some of my previous startup functions that would occur at the very beginning of my starup process now occur 15 minutes later. It is as if Dell has hijacked my startup and shutdown functions and has put them in whatever order they have determined. Previous to installing Dell Support Center my startup and shutdown was not more than a few minutes for each activity.

I uninstalled Dell Support Center, in the hopes of restoring my startup and shutdown processes to my previous normal time of a few minutes. No success, the startup with Blank Screen and shutdown is still 10-15 minutes each.

4/13/08: I tried a system restore to a time prior to installing Dell Support Center, no change, startup with blank screen and shutdown still 10-15 minutes.

Any ideas of what I can do at this point would be appreciated. I will try to get through to Dell, but from past experience that will be of little help. Especially since I don't have Dell Support Center installed to contact Dell and don't intend to ever install it again based on what it has done to my pc. Any ideas other than call a technician would be appreciated.

I'm trying to update Support Center.  I'm told that I have to remove the old version first, but Programs and Features won't let me do anything to it.  I click on it, and nothing at all happens.  I'm running Windows Vista.  I just installed service pack one, but the problem predates it.

 Any ideas?

I do not want my computer screwed up.  How can I get rid of the pop-up and reminders???

Thanks,

I've tried the suggestions here but it did not work. The original problem that I've had is the same after uninstalling and reinstalling Dell Support Center. I get as far as "starting Dell support system...please wait while Dell support center setup process completes" but it NEVER completes? Also after uninstalling support center and reinstalling I did receive a message stating that "this is not a dell system and some functions may be unavailable but I DO have a Dell system!? What is wrong with this? Also I am unable to close out the setup screen. I receive a popup stating that "Dell support center is busy, please try again later!?? Please email me and let me know what I can do to fix this annoying issue. Thank you

Please add me to the list of Dell users that are completely frustrated with the new DCS 2.0.  My only positive on this download was that I was fortunate enough to delete it without any major hassels (although I can't seem to get rid of the damn tray icon).  When I had it installed, it corrupted my wireless connectivity using the intel pro manager.  It also gave me the endless reboot loop message.  I'm hoping that Dell forgot to mention that this was a beta version since the support center is a gateway to most of its online support features that I paid extra for when I bought the laptop.  In the meantime I would like to see an announcement from Dell that says they acknowledge the bugs and are working on release 2.1 and will advise when its ready.

I restored my pc to an earlier point.  How can i stop these persistent popups and system tray icon trying to push me to download DSC 2.0 again?  Please tell me how to disable that.

AJ,

We are still talking to the group that is responsible for this. I well let you know when I find an answerer.

I installed DSC, since it was a Dell program and would, thereby, assume it would work and not harm my computer.  It totally messed up my wireless connection.  I don't have a landline and so it is annoying to have to keep restarting and restarting to try to get the wireless connect to work.  I had no problems ever before this DSC program. I uninstalled the software and hope it won't cause further disruptions.  Otherwise, I sure hope Dell intends to fix any issues caused by their product regardless of warranty status.  Advice for Dell - stop those pop-ups for software that does not work.

I am still unable to stop DSC 2.0 from trying to dwonload. I booted in safe mode and tried to unistall Dell support, but Visat told me it could not find the installation files for this program. I disabled Dell support in MSconfig but it still has not stopped the download program starting every time I start the computer. How can I stop the computer from trying to download DSC 2.0?

We got the message to upgrade to DSC 2.0 last night and did so, and now the computer gets the blue screen upon booting EVERY TIME.  We will try the safe mode/uninstall that others have suggested, and WON'T be reinstalling.  I am SO ANGRY with Dell over this.  I have been a loyal customer for 10 years, but that is likely to change.  And on 1/6 Lionel said they would be working on it and he would post in a week with more information.  Where are you Lionel?  And why is Dell still prompting for upgrades that don't work and even shut down computers 2 MONTHS after the problem was identified??  Hmmm?

I live in UNITED KINGDOM I have

3 YEAR WARRANTY & I need a plastic bracket holder for

DELL DIMENSION 3100. The tech support guy said ( in india ) i got to phone dell spare parts NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY.

Sorry for caps but no one understands that in UK it is not easy to get through.

I was 'forced' to download the DSC software by the automated upgrade message, which said that my old version was now dead. I run a Dell Inspiron 6400 using Vista. Same as many others: got a message saying that this was not a Dell system (!) but continued anyway. All was well until I shut down and tried to reboot a short while later. My user profile was 'unobtainable', leaving me locked out at the initial password controlled entry screen.

I rebooted in safe mode and tried to remove the Dell SC software, but this kept locking/failing. In the end, I opted for a complete systems restore to the previous change point - which was listed as the upgrade of the DSC. Hey presto - sanity restored.

Now I get the upgrade prompt every day. Sure, I could uninstall the old software and the message would go away. But I would have liked the DSC package IF it was trouble free. Doesn't seem like this is the case from the above? Would like to know what to do.

So nobody has a link or knows how I can find a link to dowload support center previous to 2.0? It actually worked correctly but dell insisted when I upgraded to 2.0 it was not running properly because the previous version was still installed . Still paid $$ for the automatic tune up subscription I apparently cannot use unless I can discover how to download the older version of support center. Or if they actually fix version 2.0 I can get it to work properly and actually recognize my real pc an service tag # etc. Even then not sure how 2.0 allows a person to run the automatic tune up? This is nuts dell insisting you upgrade to something new and improved and compared to the old version its complete garbage!!! So now I have a paid subscription to absolutely nothing.. if only $ grew on trees....

I have solved the IE7 not opening flash in Windows Vista Home Premium. Just right click on the IE desktop icon and 'run as admin'. Flash comes back to life in IE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My contribution of woe, downloaded DS 2.0 yesterday after reminders annoyed me enough.

Wireless stopped working today, after an hour chasing around router settings and everything else I think, "It couldn't be the SUPPORT program lousing up system could it?  That would be toooo ironicly stupid".  Use XP system restore to back up to before downloading DS 2.0.

Wireless back up immediately like a charm.

Where can I send Dell the bill for my time???

My computer has been trying to download Dell support 2.0 for the last 2 days. How do I stop the download. If I right click on the icon I only get 2 options "Pause" or "Resume". I do not want Dell support 2.0 but I do not know how to stop the download?

Robin,

I'm sorry to hear you are having problems.

Reboot your system into Safemode. Then remove Dell Support from the Control Panel - Add/Remove programs. When finished, restart your computer in normal mode.

I have one more problem, Flash does not work in IE7.

Due to recent enhancements to the Adobe Flash Player installers, you can now remove the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller.  This must be done before updating to the latest version.  Click on my name above to go to the Adobe site's page for further information, including download links for the uninstaller.  If the link above doesn't work copy and paste this to your browser: http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157

Very frustrated with the new support center 2.0. I am subscribed to the monthly pc automated tune up which cost $ per month and was happy with the old support center software.. But i kept getting those pop up messages to upgrade to version 2.0 So I uninstalled the older version and installed 2.0 and now this new version is not even coming close to recognizing my actual pc or service tag number.( I have a dimension and it says I have a latitude cpx) I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times with the same result. So the question is how do I get the old version back so even if I dont get pop up updates i can still run the automated tune up subscription that i have paid for for several more months? Now I cant find a link to download the older versions... Please help so this can finally be resolved... Getting very frustrated

I have one more problem, Flash does not work in IE7. I have Vista Home Premium on Dell Inspiron 530. I have tried everything on earth to solve the problem and I have the latest Flash ActiveX installed, but when I try to open a flash page, it always tells to download the latest flash version. How to solve the issue ???

I also had problems with the Dell Support Center. I uninstalled the older version , then downloaded the latest version. When I tried to install it the installer said "This is not a Dell System" and warned that it may not work. I still installed it and it opened a blank screen. Apparently the old version removed something in my system that identifies it as a Dell Inspiron 530 . Now I cannot get the Dell on-line web-based checkup to work either because it thinks my system is not a Dell. Any Ideas how to solve this ??????

Just a word of caution... had to learn it in a hard way. DSC does not work if you have upgraded your OS. It would identify your machine and non Del and will never work! When I was repeatedly prompted by DSC to upgrade to the latest version finally I did so. But new version never worked. It always gives message 'Starting Dell Support Center - please wait while Dell Support Center setup process completes', It never completes the installation.I contacted Dell and the support person removed both the versions of DSC (old and new - I didn't know that it would keep both versions simultaneously!). Then tried to install the new version. It gave warning that my machine was not a Dell machine! What the heck!! I still have the service tag and all the documents that I got the laptop from Dell...The support person came to help. My system is 'no more supported by Dell' as I upgraded my XP Home to XP Professional version and that upgrade CD was not from Dell. That was a very nice way to say after removing my old version of Dell Support!!!! Again help from support person... I have to restore my machine. :(

Bottom line, I don't understand why Dell asks to upgrade their software but then don't support the upgrade on the OS. If it does not, then why not tell it beforehand!! I have been using Dell laptops for a long time, but possibly now I have to move to something else for the next laptop.... I am not happy about the way the support (both support center and the person) works.

Lionel, your note of 6 JAN mentioned that you were working with the development team to stop the daily reminders and to stop the requirement to upgrade to Dell Support Center 2.0.  What are the results of your process and what is Dell's plan, including schedule?  I still get the unwanted reminders.  I do not want to upgrade.  Please provide us with a detailed and truthful update.  Thank you.

I also had problems with the Dell Support Center. I uninstalled it as you suggested, then downloaded the latest version. When I tried to install it the installer said "This is not a Dell System" and warned that it may not work. I cancelled the install, re-downloaded DSC and tried again - same problem. Apparently the old version removed something in my system that identifies it as a Dell Dimension 8400. Now I cannot get the Dell on-line web-based checkup to work either because it thinks my system is not a Dell.

FYI

I just bought a one year old inspiron 6400/e1505 and was quite impressed with the DSC. I decided to go online and use this great online database of updates and system info and found the update to DSC so I installed it. My DSC now won't tell me my service tag or other codes and gives me a "this content no longer available "message for most of the DSC features.

I was able to uninstall using add-remove programs and will now not install the DSC. It boots much more quickly now too. Whew!

I have uninstalled and re-installed, but when I click on "drivers and downloads" it says:  "No Internet Connection Detected".  This is crazy because of course I'm connected.  Been having this problem with this since the beginning.  I connnect via a USB Sprint Aircard (Novatel Wireless Expedite EV-DO Modem).  I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with Media Center, Windows XP.  Thank you.  If you can't help me, where can i get support for this (without needing a credit card!).

I am being asked to download and install dsc 3 in replace of dell support. should i bother? sounds like a headack..

Dell Support Center is an another annoyinng intrusion from DELL trying to provide help that is not 'helpful'. It adds 10 minutes to boot times -- which is staggering for a dual processor PC.

The real problem with the Dell Support Center application is the poor design. There is no user configuable option to prevent it from running at startup. There is no startup menu item or Windows service that can be disabled. This forces the unwanted application on the user with no alternative -- except uninstalling.

It would be much better if it was an application that could be launched when needed.

M. Johanson
Lionel, you have been quiet on this issue and not responding to direct emails like you promised.  What is Dell's position on this matter?  It is a problem that needs fixing.  Please tell us the latest information on how to stop Dell Support Center 2.0 and please respond to our questions.  Thank you very much.

M. Johanson: My apologies.. will work with the development team in the coming week to see what can be done.

Martin Saiz
I installed Dell Support Center 2.0 twice. Both times it deactivated my tuner card. Each time I was able to reactivate it with System Restore. I no longer wish to install Support Center. How do I stop the daily reminders ?

Roger North
I have had a Dell Dimension E520 running Vista since May 2007. It currently has Dell Support Centre version 2.0.07282 installed, but that programme has never worked correctly - details of suggested downloads always appear in German (I am English, do not speak German, and did not tell the program that I did) and I cannot change the default language.

After being prompted by DSC, I downloaded the latest version of DSC and attempted to remove the previous version via Add / Remove programmes, following lionel_menchaca@dell.com's directions (http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/12/01/36988.aspx) - but DSC would not uninstall whatever I did.

After installing DSC, I noticed my system became slow and I had problems installing Windows updates and other software, but didn't realise this might be due to DSC itself until I did some research.

I was very pleased with this my first Dell computer, and am very disappointed that Dell software is consistently causing it to malfunction. I am reluctant to pay an exorbitant fee (at least UK£17) to resolve a problem via "Dell Software Support" when it is not of my making, so am taking lionel_menchaca@dell.com up on his kind offer to contact him direct. I await developments before I attempt to change 'pcd5srvc.pkms' to
'pcd5srvc.pkms.old' and try uninstall again (many thanks to Peter Campo for that tip).

M. Johanson

How do you stop the daily reminders to download Dell Support Center 2.0?  I do not want it and I do not want the reminder!  There is no option that I can see to extend the "reminder period" or to stop it.  Will uninstalling the old DSC get rid of its upgrade reminder?  Will I lose any meaningful resources by uninstalling the old DSC?  Will the old DSC be available on my PC for reinstallation if I uninstall it?

Furthermore, I tried to navigate the Dell support page to try to get some online relief on this subject.  Forget it.  Needed service tags, order numbers, etc.  Good brick wall.

As T. Catt asked, what are the pros?

This blog might be the only entry point.  Thank you.

Eric Brewer
Given the comments from people who have reinstalled the Support Center 2.0 are uniformly negative, I will not download it.

Re: Dell Support Center 2.0

First, thank you for the Dell Blog, it's very helpful. And I'm glad the DSC issues were googleable..

I don't see anything about a fix for the extremely slow start-up, and the slow release of registry/services which does not allow operating system to log off the user profile. And DSC seems to slightly affect speed & smoothness of applications at times. SupportSoft & Dell screwed up this time. If I can't fix this by Friday, I will have to uninstall completely. Too bad, Dell Support 3.4 was good, no problems. Also, the non-specific alerts were confusing to this serious reader as Dell said they would be specific - turns out they were generic, don't like having my time wasted.

Thank you, JCA  PS: Dell thinks its home/home office users want all brand new things - not so. Please go back to selling laptops with XP for a while!

I have downloaded and installed Dell Support Center, but it will not start.  When I double click the icon, the window opens briefly, a green circle rotates a few times, then the window closes.  I have uninstalled, redownloaded and reinstalled several times.  I have uninstalled the old Dell support.

Yesterday,( Dec 9) 10:00 AM, I received a message from my original Dell Support about the new Dell Support Center (DSC).  My normal restart time was about 3 minutes.  After installing the new DSC my restart now took over TEN minutes!! After this, my computer worked so slowly that it was almost impossible to use. Then by your advice I uninstalled my DSC and my computer is still sick. What am I  supposed to do now???

NOT Happy!!

The DSC will not uninstall..  It aborts at the very end of the process....help

Lionel Menchaca,

I just uninstalled DSC this morning after it crashed my computer again.   It had the same BSOD saying there was an error in the file PCD5SRVC.pkms ...   Anyways, after uninstalling DSC my computer really boots up faster.   Also an added benefit is there is *far* less hard drive scrubbing on startup.   I am running windows xp with 2 GB of ram and almost no startup processes/programs, so it always annoyed me that my computer would take so long to start up and be slow/noisy for several minutes after the desktop finally showed up.   With DSC gone I no longer have those problems.   Is there a compelling reason for me to reinstall DSC?   Cons for it are 1) it can cause odd windows behavior, 2) it can crash my system, 3) it does cause slow start up on my system.   What are the Pros?

Thanks for this extra post!
