XPS M1530: Like the M1330 But Bigger

Today, the XPS M1530 is available for order worldwide. It features all of the design elements that have made the XPS M1330 a success, but it also brings a larger 15.4" display and a more powerful graphics card option—NVIDIA's 8600M GT with 256MB RAM with Direct X 10 support. Initially, the 15.4" display will support WXGA resolution, or 1280 x 800.

Update: 12/21—Today, we began offering higher resolution display options to customers in the United States. In addition to the original 1280 x 800, display, customers can now choose 1440 x 900, or the WSXGA+ panel that is capable of  a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050.

I've received e-mails and comments from customers requesting a 15" XPS notebook, and user lilredfoxie submitted an idea called 15.4 size XPS system on IdeaStorm. The XPS M1530 inludes standard features like an integrated webcam, touch-sensitive multimedia controls, a travel slot remote, brushed aluminum accents and a fingerprint reader. We'll offer a slot-loading Blu-ray disc player option (something we don't yet offer on the XPS M1330), and the system also features an HDMI output. Like most other other Inspiron and XPS notebooks, the XPS M1530 can be outfitted with built-in mobile broadband, with a choice of carriers.

Here's a picture that compares the M1330 (on top) with the M1530 (on bottom):

In this vlog, Mike Horn from the XPS Product Team discusses the features in more detail.

Just got my 1530 (2.6, 4 gig, wuxga on 8600m gt, 320 gig/7200 rpm) and I can't see why anyone would complain.

Playing COD4 right now in 1900x1200 glory...this is a HUGE upgrade from my XPS M140.

You guys must just be spoilt...lubs my new XPS lappy.

GG DELL!

got a xps 1530 over a month ago, it took over 35 days to get it, speakers are horrible, the finger print dose not work, the notebook has a scratch, finally spoke to customer service and got a second noetebook, it also riddeled with problems.  Returned both notebooks and going with sony.

i just purchased an xps 1530, it took over a month to get it, what a disappointment, once i got it the speakers were not working, the finger print was not working and the notebook had a slight scratch on it, now comes customer support ( what a joke, i mean what a joke).  Everytime i called, it took them about 6 to 8 transfers to get me to the correct dept, finally i was able to get a replacement notebook, and again this time the fan was not working, the finger print was not working, frankly i think there is nothing special about dell or nothing special about the xps 1530.

I ordered a Dell XPS m1530 on July 7th or somewhere around that Date. I am not supposed to receive this computer until August 18th. First, this is a large amount of time to construct one notebook. Second, I start college that day and I need the capabilities then. I go to school 4 hours away from my house. Why must it take so long to ship one computer? The online chatting with the Technical Service was awesome and we did all the "paperwork" then. Why does it take a month and a day to construct and ship it?

Thanks,

John

 hi,i want to know :

1: why LED screen is not available in red color of 1530 when i try to costumize my xps  in dell.usa website?also 250 GB HDD with 7200 rpm &  finger print? (but all of them r available in black color)

2: 9-cell battery is 154$ but 6-cell is 199$! and changing 6-cell with 9 cell in our purchase costs 169$(so instead of changing 6 with 9 in selected laptop,we can buy with 6-cell and puchase an additional 9-cell  with 154$ more payment and then we have one 6-cell battery more with 199+169-154=214 saving money!!!!!!!)

3: will you sell LEDs in resolution more than 1440 with HD technology & 320 GB HDD in 7200 rpm in XPS M1530 & 512 MB 8600 VGA?

The XPS1530 is great, but there is no driver for XP in dell website.

LED screen is what I am waiting for on the 1530. Dell is it going to happen?

I'm ready to buy one once Penryn is offered. I need a new notebook on the quick, so dell, get on it. :)

Dell Australia are shipping the M1330 with the T9300:

http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

when can we expect this in the UK ?

Regards,

Phil

I bought XPS M1530 last month for RM5509 with the following specification,

  • Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB 2M L2 Cache)
  • 2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm, for XPS M1530
  • 15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA TrueLife LCD with 2.0 MP Camera
  • 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

Found out the hard way that,

  • The speakers are terrible
  • Audio chipset does not offer much (unlike other brands)
  • Audio played with Dell Media Direct and Windows Media Player is haunted by choppy/skipping problem. Dell technician confirmed the problem with their test unit, blaming the problem on Vista
  • Try to make up with the low quality speakers by using the provided Creative earphones but is haunted by the hissing sound. The hissing sound is there the moment the laptop is switched on. Muting the sound also produces hissing sound.
  • Had an on-site engineer replaced speakers but leaved the beautiful laptop with scratches and chipped. Replaced dashboard panel (scratched) after some complaint and one of the button was not working after replacement.
  • Had the laptop replaced with a new replacement unit only to find that the paint is chipped and the top case is deformed.
  • Returned the system for refund after a few more complaint.

Anyway, I will definitely reorder another XPS M1530 if the following are offered:

  • Instead of using SigmaTel chipset for the audio, change it to some other chipset like Realtek
  • Improve the speakers quality
  • Improve the quality control at the factory (no more defect)

I'm actually in need of a new laptop and is trying my best not to get another brand. Will be waiting for another 1 or 2 months, or will definitely go for Acer 5920G which is about RM700 cheaper (I'm living in Malaysia) with similar specification plus the following exta

  • Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor T7500 (4MB L2 cache, 2.2GHz, 800MHz FSB)
  • Surround speakers with sub woofer
  • No hissing sound with the earphones (I tried the earphones provided by Dell with my friend's unit)
  • Dolby®-certified surround sound system
  • Extra 1 USB port
  • No skipping/choppy audio during playback

The cons of Acer 5920G compared to Dell XPS M1530

  • Heavier by about 0.4kg
  • Thicker
  • Touchpad is not as good

Product specification and price can be found here.

As far as I can see, it would be stupid for any Malaysian to buy Dell XPS M1530 when Acer offers better specification and is cheaper.

No support for virtualization - this is going back.  I have the 1330 too and assumed it was there.  Big mistake - get the BIOS updated Dell!!!

Just got the machine and now I'm sending it back...

As Dave's comment above, I also am wondering why Intel VT is not configurable on the 1530 model? The 1330 does allow it..

This potentially seems backwards.  Some of us work in the computer industry and test 64-bit applications, but if running a 32-bit OS, we can't run 64-bit virtuals! Please advise. Is this going to be added as an option?

Still waiting on the Penryn chips... Need a laptop soon and hoping I'm not going to be forced to go with the cheaper hp's and sony.

The XPS 1530 BIOS does not come with any support for virtualization in the BIOS - I hope DELL enables this (it is there in the 1330) as it makes a big difference for those doing a lot of VM based development.

Dell Where is the Penryn chips???

Sony and HP are both already shipping with the T9300.  I am waiting for this chip before I buy!

I would love LED LCD too!  ;o)

I was hoping to see a 8800 as an option above the 8600. Add what hp is already offering with the new dv9700t - the T9300 processor for a $225 upgrade above the T5450 and it would be perfect.

Instant buy for me once these are available.

+1, don't necessarily need an 8700 though, 8600 is sufficient enough.

I love the M1530 but I second Lorenzo!  Dell if you what my business, add LED display options and new Penryn processors.  Please, please make me happy soon!  If those features become available you will have a new customer on your hands immediately!

Waiting for high-res LED display (with a thinner frame, please!) and Penryn processors (should be out 6 jan).

Then I will buy one immediately!

PS: 8800m, even GTS, would be nice but I think it's just impossible to fit it in the XPS. Too thin, not enough cooling...

The 1440x900 became available, and I ordered mine.  A tweak up here and there, including the 256MB NVIDIA, a little better processor and memory, quicker wireless, etc., total came to just over $1800 plus tax.  I don't like this new tax thing.  I'm ordering a Brenthaven messenger bag for security.  Will follow up after I get a chance to try it all out.  Best, mates.

Any idea as to when these panels will hit the Uk? I've been after the XPS 1530 during Xmas but obviously left it too late as delivery times were 2-3 weeks. I'd like to get one now in early 2008 but might as well hold out until the new panels arrive.

any news on when 1680x1050 while be out in the UK. i spoke to someone at dell over the phone and the said the 1440x900 is just out (although the website has not been updated) but that 1680x1050 will be 3-4 MONTHS!

May I suggest these options:

1.  LED backlit screen

2.  GeForce 8800M graphics

3.  HD-DVD drive

4.  HSDPA modem

I'll definitely buy an M1530 should these options become available!

When is there going to be LED screen option available?

Great news on the resolution. 99% on the way to buying one, but one final little thing.

How about an option for gigabit lan? This is a high performance machine, but it will be limited on my home network.

There is now a 1440x900 and 1680x1050 resolution option for the m1530.

I ORDERED MINE ON 19 DEC.

I will buy one when resolution is 1440x900 or 1680x1050 LED as well. Maybe better graphics cards too, but the resolution is more important to me. I suppose all we can do now is wait and hope. Hopefully it won't take too long though because I really want this notebook soon...

I Order mine

XPS M1530, Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB 2M L2 Cache)

420-7715 1 Camera Software XPS M1530 2.0MP

256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M G

$$ 1280

I think I will get it today or tomorrow. I wish I know if they will make 1440x900 or higher  anytime soon.  like the Dell guy said, there is always something better tomorrow. After what I read. I feel like sending back as is.. and wait....

I am very surprised that this laptop isn't offered with a gigabit ethernet option. Strange as this is supposed to be a high performance offering.

I have been holding back for a week hoping that they would add either 1440x900, 1680x1050 or 1920 x 1200! Whats the deal I don't know anyone even my mom wouldn't buy a computer that has a 5 year old screen like 1280!

If you look at EVREY other notebook maker out there, they offer much more options on a 15" screen!

This is not a top of the line xps computer it is a bottom of the bucket old tech dell...

Got a Latitude D630 with 256MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 140M™ at a resolution on 1920 x 1200.  It's a beautiful thing.  Would grab the 1530 up if it offered the same 1920 x 1200 option.  No excuse not to offer it with a video card like they give you with it.

Just wanted someone to know that the build-your-m1530 page that allows the customer to choose the LCD-camera option (of which there are none), has an image that is supposed to be of an M1530, but is actually of an M1330.  As the proud owner of an M1330, it caught my eye immediately.  Here is a screen print of the page http://evergladesfl.net/images/1330_not_1530.jpg , and here is a link to the page (you have to click on the "LCD and Camera" option).

I agree with everyone who has voiced concern about the screen resolution - it's keeping my credit card in my wallet!  It looks like Dell is going to bump this up after the holidays but can we get a date when this is going to happen, please?

Look over there - I can see Apple waving a MacBook Pro at me...

Amen to the 1530 resolution issue. Was going to by one straitaway had to cancel when I found out only 1280x800. May be good enough for my Mom, but simply unacceptable for me. I don't want a boxy inspiron either! I only have a couple more months to wait than its Ok Bye to Dell, and on to something else. (Why is 1280 even an option anymore?)

Yes why do they force you to buy W Vista. The first thing that happens when I get it home is partition install XP Pro so I can have my freedom!

Why low screen res, why, will have to go with apple...

I think Dell pair the low res screen with the 8600 GT because this is the optimistic playable res for any recent game.

Great blog, raising my issues exactly.  Hopefully waiting for the after-holidays upgrades on screen, maybe video card too.  One other small wish that I'm not actually certain about is an XP-Pro option to the Vista operating system.  Maybe SP1 fixed Vista enough, heard any news?

I keep asking myself why Dell dropped the ball with that low res screen? What happend?

To the guy who said he works for Dell, why are you posting here?  More to the point, why isn't your post to let the rest of us know you'll be starting a communications campaign within Dell to make sure these issues are heard?

I agree with the issue of resolution, but argue that the LED option to the screen makes such a small difference that it isn't important at this point.  Look at the MacBook Pro.  The LED option was engineered such that it doesn't truly offer a whole lot more than the standard CCFL option.  Granted, this is the XPS line, but I doubt the LED option is really going to be as outstanding as people think.

And to everyone complaining about how Dell rushed this for the holidays: Dell wasn't marketing to you, but to the people who aren't bothered in the least by the resolution and LED option and whatnot.  This really should be obvious and really shouldn't warrant any commentary.  Nonetheless...

:)

I will but the XPS M1530 when (as most of the other posts have pointed out) an LED backlight screen is made available, hopefully this will be available soon in the UK, I've heard rumours of a December release.

Terrible, Terrible decision not to use LED LCD, and higher resolution. Dell, You have lost many, many possible customers due to this.

This also seems like you have rushed to deliver this for the winter holidays, to compete against sony and apple. Bad decision there too.

For most people to take this seriously, upgrade the resolution, and import into it an LED LCD, and you got yourself a customer.

I'll buy it - when I can get it with 1440x900 resolution in an LED screen and can buy it IN CANADA. Probably take Dell many months before this happens.

Dell: What can we build for you today?

Me: XPS 1530 w/ WSXGA+ and Nvidia 8800M GTS, please. (I'm being realistic by not asking for the GTX version.)

Dell: Done!

Me. Sold! Thanks, that was easy! Oh how I love Dell.

I'd be all over this if it had a 1950 X 1200 panel.

Christopher

Anybody knows when this will be released in Asian markets like Malaysia and Singapore?

I just hope they make available higher resolutions for the M1530 if not this will really hinder the sales of this system as ppl already konw how good ths M1330 looks with White LED and higher resolution so there is no point to offer something new with lower resolutions and no White LED backlight.

"Updates to the platform after the holidays"

That pretty much says it all for me, I will be waiting until "after the holidays" to even consider this notebook and I highly recommend everyone else do the same. Save your hard earned money until they introduce the system with better specs. Way to shoot yourself in the foot there Dell ...

Beautiful system, but the previous posters have hit the cons right on the head:

- Low res screen.  1280x800?  What is this, 2001 again?

- No LED backlighting option

- No docking solution

Lastly, they refuse to sell it with no operating system.  I have an operating system license already and am tired of being told I have to spend another $200 - $400 for something I don't need.

So Dell is on the right path with the M1330 and M1530 - both stylish, both small form-factor, both at decent price points.  But I agree with other posters - Dell pushed the M1530 out the door to meet the holiday deadline, and shortchanged their core customers in the process.

I would seriously consider buying this latop but for the fact that:

  1. Graphics card is subpar ( should offer 256 mb NVIDIA )
  2. Screen resolution is subpar (why not at least WSXGA?)

So where I can get these with Ubuntu preloaded?

When I first posted above, I was quite happy about the product (looks great, price is ok), except the delay. However, now that I've looked at it, 1) Why is there no LED option!? That has to be the biggest feature that got me interested in the smaller one! 2) The screen resolution is so awful! My 5 year old D600 has better than this! I can't possibly "downgrade". I've ended up going for it's baby brother. May be next time!

In a 15.4 Inch form factor I would not even consider this until I see a 1920x1200 screen - Dell you did it for the Inspiron 6000, bring that greatness to this lappy please!

HELLO EVERYONE!!! what about the CPU that's being offered. I was expecting a Santa Rosa platform with the 7000 chipset. The graphics card is a good one, although the screen resolution maybe a little low. I just can't get over the 1.6 GHz processor 5240. I mean even its little brother, the 1330, has got more under the hood than this. I can't believe Dell even published an XPS on their website without the 7000 series chipset. Isn't XPS supposed to be their flagship??? Please tell me that the 7000 chipset is an option in this, If so I'll place an order tomorrow!

In the computer world, there is always something new coming out, if you look at it that way, there is never a good time to buy a computer.  As soon as you buy one, something newer, cheaper, better, prettier, faster, smaller, bigger, or some combination of the above is about to be released.

XPS does not mean gaming, XPS 1730 and XPS 720 mean gaming.  Other XPS systems have their own selling points.  I would hope people can tell the XPS 1330 was never intended to play games on.  It is for the person that wants decent performance, light weight, good looks but does not want a tiny 12 inch system.

I work at Dell, but these are just my opinions. :)

Wow my Inspiron 6000 has a 1680x1050 screen and this one doesn't?  I thought Dell was listening to us on IdeaStorm?  Seems like another half baked product to me.

I will say I mostly like the looks of the XPS M1330 and M1530 except for the light colored keyboard but what happened to all the options we have been asking for?  If it is just because of parts shortages and the holidays say so.  You are loosing customers who think this is going to be all that is going to be available but if they know that January will bring better options they will wait.  Plus it will avoid the backlash from people who buy now only to find out they should have waited.

I will buy one when resolution is 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

That thing is a flop unless - LED LCD with a higher resoltution and makes the laptop thinner is employed like the m1330.

And the GPU is better. the 8600GT is getting long in the tooth there are better GPU's to choose from that fall within the thermal envelope. This is an XPS.

If i want a standard CCFL screen and 8600GT i can pick up a vostro 1500 very cheaply.

If only dell would up the m1330's GPU to a 8600gs/gt i would snap that up but at the moment looks like there is nothing enticing from dell for me.

I hope these are next on the list:

Bump resolution to 1680- like my 4 yr old inspiron 8100

DVI output- DVI monitors do exist you know

HDMI output that supports VIDEO and AUDIO?  Or does it?

Like Weeva mentioned. Dell Inc is flogging a dead horse. Nothing new or constructive has come from the Dell product line in a long time. Where are the 'new and fresh ideas' submitted on the dellideastorm website? Just where is the hardware creative ability?

I will stick to Lenovo until Dell Inc pulls up its socks on the production line...

How about instead of adding new product lines which are similar to old product lines because your advertising for old product lines are misleading you resolve the problems with the old product lines? All of the print. online and television advertising for the m1330 flaunts its amazing performance and how fast it is.. zoom zoom, bang bang; but in reality its performance is not all that amazing especially the 3D performance of the NVIDIA 8400 card which you are now (including with the 1530 but made the owners of the 1330 pay an additional $100 for.....?) You may want to make new adds which flaunt the 'portability' of the m1330 and not so much the performance because thats really all it has, its a 13" smartphone in 3 different colors...

I think there are going to be quite a few folks who are sold into the 1330 who wish they would've gotten a 1530 if they had known that the system is so slow (again mostly the 3d performance...) it was sold as a performance machine with a Santa Rosa and Direct X 10 generation hardware but the hardware can't keep up with the last generation XPS gaming laptops.

Anywhoo, take this for what its worth.

Weeva

What's the go with the resolution and the lack of an LED backlight? The M1330 set such a high standard, and it seems that the M1530 has fallen short of that. Is there a liklihood that there will be some sort of update on the screens?

This is an extreme disappointment. With the launch of the 8800m cards, and several companies announcing 8800m GTX Based 15" laptops, I expected more from Dell.  Especially considering one of the companies was Alienware.  It's as though Dell just wanted to push something out for christmas and doesn't care if it's below par when compared to other companies.  Even when compared to their own non XPS systems this laptop comes up short. A higher resolution screen is available, and all the other options seem the same as you could get when the 1520 launched.  I want a fully feature 15" laptop with some teeth to replace my well aged Inspiron 9300.  I've been waiting, and hoping for a strong showing from Dell, but they just super sized the 13" and called it an XPS... I thought XPS meant power, and gaming, not 6 month late releases.

I'm sure some people will love this laptop, but it really shouldn't be labeled an XPS if it can't measure up as a gaming machine.

Well done. I might purchase one when the resolution increases to higher than my current Latitude D620 (1440x900). Great job on the graphics options. The only thing that might hold me back is the light colored keyboard. I look forward to seeing this at a kiosk in town.

First of all, this is the first Dell i have seen in about 5 years that has taken me bye awe. This and it's smaller brother (or are they sisters, i never know?!) look great, seem to be quite rich in performance, and don't like as hidious as the Macbooks! (yes, i don't like the look of Mac books; thanks a billion for NOT going down that avenue!)

I am in the UK so promtly went to the website, wanting to order one of these (my Latitude D600 is now 5 years old!), for christmas. The (UK one at least) site says there is a 3-4 week "minimum" delay in shipping this.. A real real shame, and stopped me pressing the confirm button. I'm now looking around. I may be back!

This is great news.  I was looking for a laptop to replace my 4 year old Latitude D600, and now I've found the ideal laptop.  Pretty good specs, and very sleek looking.  I'll be buying an M1530 as soon as its offered with an 1440x900 resolution LED display screen.

I would buy this laptop except for the screen. What that heck is the deal with the low res? Please Dell WSXGA+ 1680x1050.

Shelby: We finally have added higher-resolution displays... see my update to this post.

Sweet!  Looks very nice!

Great to see you expanding this product line.

Now give us the same form factor XPS, but with a high quality 12" LED backlit screen, and you'll pull me away from my Lenovo X series ;)

Looks great.  Hopefully screen resolution options will increase soon.  And how about a docking solution for these XPS units?

So how long is the delivery time on that one? ;)
