XPS One: New Dell All-in-One PC

Take your pick... you might have seen some notices on Engadget, Gizmodo or Crave that the XPS One was available for pre-order. If you missed those, you may have seen the PC Magazine review, where it earned a 4.5 star rating and an Editors' Choice award. Well now it's official, we have officially launched the XPS One. It's our first-ever all-in-one system, which means the computer, the flat panel, the speakers and the integrated 2 megapixel camera and microphone are all integrated in a single piece. The XPS One will initially be available to customer in Japan and the United States.

Update, 12-6: Just saw we posted the XPS One commercial on Dell.com. Lots of old computers blow up in a stylized environment and there's a song playing in the background. Kinda cool.

From a design perspective, it's more symmetrical than many of our competitors' all-in-ones. It looks more like a standalone flat panel display. The 20" widescreen features an edge-to-edge temepered glass for an uninterrupted, seamless look. The strong yet sleek aluminum stand feeds into the smoked-glass base of the unit. Another cool feature is the motion-sensing multimedia buttons on the right side of the unit. If you move within a foot of the buttons, they light up for just a few seconds before they turn back off. The slot-loaded DVD drive also lights blue so you can see where to insert a disc. Bottom line, you can insert a DVD without turning the lights on. Soon after you start the movie, the lights fade from view so you can wach the movie undistracted.

Just like some of our competition the XPS One can be plugged in with a single power cord. It supports multiple wireless technologies, including 802.11 a/b/g/ and draft-N for WiFi connectivity. The wireless keyboard and mouse utilize Radio Frequency (RF) technology. We chose to support RF so we could make it easier to set up—RF technology does not require pairing like Bluetooth does. However, the all XPS One units come standard with Bluetooth 2.0 support, so if you have headphones, a headset or other Bluetooth peripherals, those will work with the system as well.

Update: RF Technology does indeed require pairing. We do this in the factory before shipping the system.

Like some designs of our competitors, the XPS One only requires one cable to power the system, display, speakers, and the integrated camera and microphone. Things like the internal analog/digital hybrid TV tuner will add at least one cable, but regardless of how many cables you will use in your setup, they can be easily routed through clips on the base.

Graphics-wise, you have two options: integrated video or the optional ATI Mobility Radeon 2400 HD. That card features an HDMI output and also supports DirectX 10. Just don't expect to be playing DX10 games at high resolution with this system... it's not designed to be a high-end gaming box. However, with the optional Blu-ray disk player (optional only in the United States at this point) (standard in Japan) and analog/ digital TV tuner, it does make a pretty slick high-def system. Since I usually get asked about this, the hybrid analog/digital tuner supports over-the-air HD. Connecting to a satellite or cable box requires a break out box and an IR sensor. Cable Card is not supported with the ATI 2400 HD hybrid tuner. One other note is that the maximum monitor resultion for the 20" flat panel is 1680 x 1050—that means that 1080P is not supported, since it requires 1920 x 1080.

Note from Lionel, 11/19—I incorrectly linked to the desktop version of the ATI Radeon 2400HD card—I have updated it. Please note that we support the mobility version of the card, which does not have HDMI out. Also the analog/digital TV tuner is a separate card, not part of the ATI 2400 HD graphics card like I had said in the previous sentence. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Like the XPS 420, the XPS One comes with Adobe Elements Studio, which is full versions of these three Adobe applications:

In this vlog, Mary Miller from the XPS product team goes into more detail about what kind of customers we designed the system for, and takes you through some of the key usability and design features that make this product unique.

HI,

I have recently got an xps one, however i want to connect it to a playstation 3. Its got an external lead with the red, yellow and white cablles go.

Can anyone tell me if it works?

Can I use the screen to display games?

If not its a strange all in one. Any response would be grateful.

Thanks

@ Sam

You may want to repost your question to the Dell Community Forums to see if a member there can help you.  The forum users tend to answer tech questions a bit faster than here on the blogs.

Also, the blog comments will be turned off in a few hours as we prepare to move to our new servers, so no one will be able to reply here.

You will still be able to create a user account and post question on the forums, however, and that may work better for you.

Did you ever get an answer to this question?

Can I upgrade the video card after the fact?  I know it uses notebook parts, but could I buy an ATI Mobile Radeon HD 2400 for my current intergrated graphics XPS One?

@ Greg Potter

As of right now there isn't really an option to upgrade the video for the XPS One.  They do use parts similar to notebooks but I believe the form factors are different and I don't think a generic notebook video card (if there is such a thing) would fit on the system board for the XPS One.

Looks like a great product.  Could use a few more MHz of processor speed however.  A 1080p display would also be nice.  And only 2 gb of ram!  Dell needs to bump that up to four and Ultimate should be able to run on the high end model.  Great product for some but for now I am sticking with Apple's iMac.

Howdy, I sure wish someone could confirm that it is QAM capable.

In other words, it can pull unscrambled digital cable channels without a set top box.

Most people view Dell gaming computers as work-a-day systems for the masses, but serious gamers who have test-driven the new Dell XPS 710 H2C know better. This “Best Of” is the first factory-produced, overclocked, water-cooled gaming PC. This sleek, black Dell on steroids features the new 3.2GHz Intel Core Duo Extreme QX6700 Processor that is factory overclocked to 3.46 GHz, two 10,000 rpm hard drives, and a whopping 4GB of RAM that upgradeable to 8GB so it flies out of the box.

Is there a Delay in shipping the XPS??

I ordered an XPS one Product Red Desktop.  But received an email stating that ship date will be 2 weeks later, than what was originally posted.  When I called Customer Service.  They couldn't help.  And stated, that they do not show why...  I need some help!  No one seems to know anything on this matter.  (I paid an arm and a leg on next day delivery too.)

Hi Christopher,

I'd like to be able to help put you in contact with someone in our Customer Care group that may be able to find out more information for you but your email address isn't working.

If you would like to contact me to see if I can find someone to help feel free to email me at Todd_Smart@Dell.com

This computer is excellent. I'm impressed so far with the display quality, media touch sensors, keyboard and overall presentation. It's also quite fast. Very satisfied customer.

I purchased an xps one with the standard 2GB of memory.  I want to upgrade to 4 GB.  Dell techs say the upgrade can't be made.  However, memory retailers say they have 2 GB sticks (will need a pair) which will fit into the 2 available slots.  I know the system will prob only recognize 3.5 GB of the memory due to the 32 bit os.  Has anyone tried to upgrade the memory from a 3rd party retailer.  Was the additional memeory recognized?

bah, i have the alienware up 2008,  its the best.

I see a tab for the XPS all-in-one on the Dell Canada web site under "Home and Home Office".

There is nothing there when you click it yet.

But a good sign they are getting ready to release it in Canada.

Ronald,

You CAN connect a cable box to the XPS One! I have mine connected to my HD cablebox. The XPS one comes with an interface module that allows you to connect it to your cable box via the included composite cable. You won't get true HD off your HD cable box since the XPS One's hybrid analog/digital tuner only allows you to receive over the air HD, not HD off your cable box. Also, the One's display monitor is not full 1080p resolution, but 1680 x 1050.   However, the picture still looks much better than if you just had the XPS One connected to the cable coming straight out of the wall without a cable box. When Dell finally decides to come out with a full 1080p screen for the XPS One (probably 2nd gen.), then they can justify offering the Blu-Ray player option (1080p). Until then, we will have to be content with the 1680 x 1050 res. I must point out though that when you watch a DVD movie on the XPS One, the resolution looks a lot closer to 1080p than when you're watching regular TV either off the cable box, or off the air. The picture detail is stunning on a DVD movie! Which makes me believe that Dell should have built the XPS One with a higher grade TV tuner, better video card, and a full 1080p screen. As I said though, the XPS One really showcases the capability of its 1680 x 1050 resolution when you watch a DVD movie on it. Hope that anwers your question Ronald.

Ronald Snider

Can you connect a cable box to XPS all in one and if so with what?

He so i was just wondering, you can play Blue-ray DVDs but without full HD?  What is the resolution then 1080i?  And since i have computer speakers that are very nice, would i be able to hook up those speakers and still have the side speaker, so i would havea  5 speaker system?

What's with Mary's obsession with the word "actually?"

I love my new Dell XPS One! It blows away the Imac and other all in ones in terms of sheer aesthetics and performance. The only complaint I have is Dell could have used a higher grade TV tuner, or at least provide an HDMI input to connect an HD cable box. Gorgeous design though, and a joy to use. Good job Dell!

can i connect my xbox360 to it?Please respond.....SOON!!!

kid: I apologize for the delay. Unfortunately, you can't use the XPS One display for an Xbox 360 output monitor.

The display does not have Component or DVI Inputs. That's why it won't work.

I too am waiting for this to come to Canada. I don't understand the delay. Will we ever see it up north?

I am dying for this computer to come out in Canada.

OMG....how much longer do we have to wait??????

My current computer is dying badly but I want to wait for the all-in-one to come out.

hi i want to bye dell 2.0  blue tooth wireless mouse can you send me the price for that. i want to buy 25 units

I just noticed that the Gateway One comes equiped with standard Ati Mobility HD 2600XT. Thats the best there is in Ati Mobility video cards. I refuse to go to gateway to buy a computer over my lifelong company, Dell. However, I feel that DELL should offer the possibility of modifying this computer a bit by letting you choose between several video cards etc. I will not buy the XPS one till it comes with an Ati Mobility HD 2600 XT at the very least. If Gateway can do it, so can DELL. Why not make the Entretainment One (the most expensive of the models) come standard with an Ati Mobility HD 2600XT? After all, you are marketing it as, I quote: " The Entertainment One:
Blu-ray Disc & ATI performance graphics" Yet both the Performance One and the Entretainment One have the same, Ati Mobility HD 2400 video card. All it really has different is the Blue Ray disc and more hard drive space. If you want to draw in some of the computer gamers like me, which I think you arent at the moment due to the lack of upgradabilty of this computer and the lower quality video card, you guys should at least start by putting in a better video card. Youll have me knocking at your door for a One as soon as it comes with an Ati Mobility HD 2600 XT at least.

Thanks!!!

Alejandro Lopez-Araujo

Wonderful design. I will buy one of these as soon as they come with a better graphics card. My classic gaming computer is coming of age and I will be forced to change it soon enough. An XPS One with better graphics would be the obvious replacement for me. I am a loyal DELL costumer who would not buy anything other than DELL.. Keep it up DELL!!

Is Mary Miller married?

Eric

Jonathan R Johnson

I don't see any answer as to when it is going to be launched in UK/Europe

Can we be told?  You are losing lots of sales to i-MAC !

Too bad about the keyboard being RF and not bluetooth.  There is a serious lack of bluetooth keyboards with built in trackpad.  I expect you could have sold a lot to both Mac and Windows users looking for a better keyboard solution.  Also, now you've stuck XPS one owners with a keyboard that may or may not ever work with another computer. Too bad.

Chuck Monroe

Wow - this will be my next PC, I am sure of it. Hopefully the keyboard and mouse are rechargeable.

Mary Miller is great, and makes me want to watch more Dell screencasts. Spontaneous, smart, and knowledgeable. And cute too.

Lionel,

I understand you guys are trying.

But did it have to be named the same as the Gateway release?

I live in the same town as you, go to the same school you graduated from (McCombs, tho.) and my spouse works for your company, but between this and the total disconnect your company seems to have with the consumers and market in which you are in as of late (e.g. lattitude XT pricing), makes me at least want to try to motivate you to try a little harder. You are overpriced, and underfeatured currently and the ship is going to founder under this unless a new course is taken.

I honestly was going to talk to recruiters from Dell, but not likely now for obvious reasons.

Good preso, but could use some polishing. You have to take a look at how Apple demo(sell) their new OSX Leopard.

Lose the black background, and use a lighter background to showcase the product.

Have better lighting, the screen looks dim and not very attractive.

Camera angle should give more space to the product, not Mary, when introducing the features.

Great product, but it's kind of funny no one mentioned the staring price is about $300 higher than the Apple iMac. Should have a toned down version with less features, but $1000 starting price to really draw the people in.

I have to say this is much prettier than the ugly boxes that HP and Gateway offers that they call all in one.

why would I want a BluRay option without 1080p?

Why would I not be able to use a cable card, or input from a cable box? HDMI, Component, DVI, something.

If it had cable HD connectivity, and higher res, I would have bought one already.

Exactly what I was looking for... a PC/TV/DVD player for my kitchen counter, small enough to fit, great whenever I need quick access to Internet or email, perfect to watch TV while having dinner or for my little daughter to watch her DVDs. A copy of Apple???, probably the same concept, but much better, there is no need to buy an external adapter to watch TV and the keyboard with the integrated mouse is another cool thing. I would just loved to have a touchscreen, but for the price it is just perfect. Great job Dell!!!

Please remind me how this is innovative. Let's see go over to Apples website, copy their design, spend millions on figuring out how to make a change here; a change there and presto, we just invented something new.

You guys are really showing your Microsoft bed colors (lack of talent, and creativity)  now.

   Microsoft dictionary

          Copy = innovation.

Does the keyboard come with backlighting for the keys? sould come standard even for notebook keyboards. Also do consider features, like those available in windowsMobile eg reset button, simple backup.

Lionel, how would you say the glass display compares to the glossy Apple display (resolution & eye pleasing wise)? Are they comparable? Will an average user (non-gamer) notice the difference between 1920 x 1080 versus 1680 x 1050?

Joe

Is the XPS One going to replace the XPS Gaming machines in future like the 720

Great product ! Just what I like to make fun of Mac users with their wired keyboard. Can we have a date for Europe ?

I'm sure you're going to get tired of hearing this, but I am a little saddened that the copy of the copy of the Imac, actually turned up with the SAME name as the Gateway copy of the Imac. I mean, we are american and at least once were (somewhat) known for our ingenuity, of which this is blatently NOT an example.

Let's not strain ourselves patting ourselves on the back here.

pattyboy: Definitely not saying an all-in-one design is for everybody.

My goal here was to share some details on this product. We're definitely aware that Apple and Gateway (and other companies as well) have had all-in-one products long before us.

That said, lots of folks here have worked to make this product stand out a bit.

Now make it bigger... I would jump at a 46" or even a 42" screen.

Nice system.... BUT why limit memory to only 2GB and include a display that won't support 1920 x 1080 - especially when you include Blu-ray?

Seems like a lot of $$$ just to save a little on space.

Carter Miller
THIS IS GREAT...my healthcare customers are looking for this solution for space savings as well as reductions in security risks by using network administration.

Chris Hertz
At first I was a bit skeptical about the product, but after watching Mary Miller's vlog, I am completely sold.  Definitely an exciting product that has a lot of great features!

Chris Hertz
Mary Miller does a great job explaining the XPS One.  At first I was skeptical about the product, but after watching the vlog I am really excited about the product!

Just awesome.

I hope it doesn't deal bad with Linux.

WOW, this took me by surprise.  I am delighted to know that my company has created an all-in-one computer. XPS One is a smooth modern design, great innovation.   Congratulations to our design and engineering teams.

Fantastic!!

I always wondered why we were never able to match up with competition in terms of design, this machine will surely blow our competition away!!

 Best wishes!

Hmm

Very appealing. I don't like the keyboard/mouse though. I need argonomic keyboard/mouse and I prefer them to be blue-tooth which I find to be a lot more reliable than RF wireless

Also interesting that you can get a Blu-Ray drive with the thing but sad that the display is not 1080p

Give Mary Miller a raise!!  Great presentation, best video introduction of a new Dell product I've seen so far on Direct2Dell.  She is well spoken, knowledgable and a great spokesperson for Dell.  Keep up the good work.  Oh yeah the product looks very nice too.  :)
