Remastering Ubuntu ISOs with the "Disc Remastering Utility" (DRU) Project

Since we released our remastered Ubuntu 7.04 ISOs last week, several people in the Ubuntu community have been asking how we created those images. The answer is with the Disc Remastering Utility (DRU), an open-source project we recently released for customizing Ubuntu media. It was originally developed to modify the Ubuntu 7.04 media to provide updated hardware support for Dell systems supported with Ubuntu, but should be extendable for use on any computer vendor's hardware. Please take a look at this project, and let us know how we can make it more useful. As always, you can direct discussions to our desktop mailing list. Please submit any bugs to the DRU Launchpad page.

Vostro customers desire to a version for its notebooks. Also one that decides the problem of the brightness control. Thanks.

I am an ubuntu user, and my next notebook will be a Dell notebook. Go ahead with this project!

I agree that everything that dell has done is greatly appreciated. They were the first (that I know of) to offer Linux on consumer oriented computers, and even remastered Ubuntu to support their laptops, they created the disk remastering utility for anyone to build their own distribution including other vendors, and are creating dkms for drivers.  With everything that dell has done, I am sure that they have earned a lot more respect from the linux community, and that they have earned respect from everyone for their direct2dell program. I know that I at least have more respect for them  than any other computer distributor.

I really appreciate the  initiative taken by Dell Computers with respect to the Open source technology. This kind of move will definitely encourage Linux or Ubuntu users to talk freely about any issues they have while using it.

Good but not good enough :-(
There are also problems with the network card that is much slower than it is on windows, but I think if I look hard enough I could find the solution for that since it's just a default onboard network card of broadcom, but the s/pdif on a port replicator seems to be quite a unique configuration.

I really don't want to give up my sound :D
The pc-speaker works fine but the s/pdif doesn't work at all and since I'm not that real experienced in searching which driver suits my hardware for linux systems because I don't really know the "ins and outs" I couldn't find it and finally gave up.... :-|

Maybe somebody with a bit more experience can give me some tips to get me pointed in the right direction.

If your only problem is your s/pdif on your port replicator, I'd say thats very good.

Will there be more remastered releases of Ubuntu for Dell systems?

I would like to know because I have a Latitude D620 and would really like to run Ubuntu but I can't seem to get s/pdif working from my port-replicator :(
