Dell "Remastered" Ubuntu 7.04 ISOs Available for Download

Based on community feedback, we have created remastered Ubuntu 7.04 CD media to help with installing the OS on the Inspiron 1420 and 530. This media includes the drivers and fixes necessary to get the OS up and running with supported hardware on those systems. For example, this media takes care of all of the steps identified here to get the OS installed on the Inspiron 1420. Please try this out, and let us know how it works.

the inspiron 530s (barely a  year old) would it be safe to assume that if i keep the origianl backup image of vista that can be restored off the secondary partition from hitting the f8 could i wipe the C: drive and install the ubuntu image without any problems or is that me just being naieve?

It's easy to get wireless with Ubuntu(I use the latest). First you have to install “Ndiswrapper” from “Add/Remove” Applications, then go to Dell's website and download Windows drivers for your wireless card(XP version). Unzip it and look for 2 files: “bcmwl5.inf” and “bcmwl5.sys.” and put them on a memory stick. Go to “System” “Administration” “Windows wireless drivers” “Install new driver” and point it to “bcmwl5.inf” It worked flawlessly for me with the same wireless card.

This is VERY frustrating... I got Ubuntu going EXCEPT wireless. I would like a LiveCD with wireless for my 1720 w/1505 wireless. I've always hated windows and can't understand why I have to use it. I don't have to have ubuntu in particular, any distro that works is good enough. Please Dell... PLEASE help us with our laptops so we won't go with another brand!

Help please. If I buy an inspiron 1720 or 1525 with Vista but the same hardware as the Ubuntu version - i.e. Integrated Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100, Intel Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card, screen res WXGA+ (1440 x 900), (no bluetooth or other stuff) am I gonna be able to make a dual boot system using this remastered  Ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10, without too much hassle? Any help appreciated.

The only thing stopping me from buying a 1720 is the Windows Vista I am forced to purchase. Make it available with Ubuntu and you got a sale ;)

I purchased a inspiron 1420 from waltmart yestarday, (t5450, geforce 8400gs, wifi, bluetooth, 2gb ram, 120gb). I installed the remastered version of ubuntu today and everything works great except bluetooth and webcam.

For newbies, the first time you boot with linux, do it in safe mode (it worked for me), and the geforce can be installed very easy with a app called "envy" (http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html)

Now im trying to make work the bluetooth, and the powertop app from intel (http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/powertop/). The webcam isnt a top priority for me right now, i hope this can be fix it in newer versions of ubuntu.

One thingh, since a installed ubuntu, the inspiron work more cool. I hope this affect the battery duration too, i didnt tested it very long with vista because its sucks, the first time i turned it on, the vista os used 700 mb of memory for doing absolute nothing...

What about XPS M1330, I recently  buy one and I will like to install Ubuntu but I am afraid about the drivers and others components that may not work in Ubuntu..

thanks..

hi every body

recently i purchased a new Dell inpiron 530n ...

can any body do me afavor for all the drivers for this Dell(operating system is win xpsp2) or full CD for the same drivers

thank you in advance

It takes ages to download. (More than 24 hours to wait, and I'm using a broadband)

Is there anywhere else I can download it in a faster pace?

Will the Remastered Ubuntu 7.04 work on  a Inspiron 531 desktop?

I called the Dell Ubuntu support line to request a disc with a Dell configured version of Ubuntu and was told the discs they supply for the current dell models w/Linux would not work on my Inspiron 1705 - the systems are entirely different. And that there were no plans to work on an anything for my model.

Would an Inspiron 1720 be close enough to a 1705 so that if there is  an Ubuntu 7.10 configured to work on the newer 1720's  I might have some hope for a properly configured Dell with Ubuntu? Or does Dell just shine their  customers on who have such OLD (I just bought  this NEW in Jan '07) models?????

After my final confrontation with Windows I dumped XP and that sickly Vista upgrade in June '07 for  Ubuntu feisty 7.04 and love it. I works pretty well almost all the time - though there were a lot of problems at first. Downloading an Ubuntu 7.04  live CD configured for Dell computers from mylittleUbuntuGuide.org did make a difference but still required  tweeking.

Last week on this site I got the impression that 7.10 would be even more Dell friendly.

To quote one of the positive comments, "It just works" souded encouraging but now I am not so sure.

I suppose I will wait but I wonder if  there is going to anything worth waiting for from Dell?

....frustrated with Dell but loving Linux

Hi.

Is there anybody that just tried this Remastered Ubuntu 7.04 on a Inspiron 1520? I tried the original version of Ubuntu yesterday, but when i start it i get "/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off" error

Hi.

I just (minutes ago) received my shiny new Inspiron 1720. I live in South Africa, so no linux preinstalled yet, but I am obviously going to run ubuntu instead of vista. It looks like some of the people are having trouble with this ISO.

Do you think it is safe for me to install this remastered image on my I1720? What would be the best course of action as a brand new dell customer - I moved because of the possibility of having a supported linx for my laptop - would be nice to actually get it up and running!

Thanks for the great steps forward in the industry.

Ivor

I just bought an Inspiron 1720 Laptop, Windows Vista really got into my nerve rapidly, I'm a Linux guy, but because of the poor support with Ubuntu for this model I'm back with XP (for now), I think is a big step not just in the free software community but in the computer sciences advancement to have a vendor like Dell selling preinstalled Linux systems, so I congratulate you.

What I would really love is to have Dell supporting their laptops in such way they give us options (drivers), your hardware and service is great, don't push us to use Vista, give us at least in your Website the complete set of drivers for Ubuntu, XP and Vista so we can use your systems how we need them.

Also a special place on your Website with manuals to make this migrations would be great, I know there are big bucks involved, but listen to your customers and we will remain faithful to you, what will be benefitial to your company.

If the specific card or component vendor doesn't make drivers for Ubuntu/XP, buy to another one if you can, there are options out there and is time to change bets, thank you.

I'm interested in buying a 1420N but I'm wondering if Dell plans to release remastered versions of each version of Ubuntu as they are released.  In other words, can I look forward to an easy install of Gutsy and its successor?

ubuntu4 italy
yeah, we are waiting hopefully that dell - after UK-Germany-France - sells  Ubuntu-Dell's in Italy too

Please sell your ubuntu-dell in Italy.

30000 italian people are waiting to buy!

Aww shucks, it doesn't work cos I have an nVidia GeForce M 8400 GS instead of an intel card. I hope I can work this out myself.

Haven't tried this yet, I will first thing tonight, but I just want to say I sincerely appreciate the effort even if I hit some snags, thank you for listening.

I installed ubuntu from the cd link given above on inspiron 1420.

I changed the desktop appearence, but as soon as i changed this setting everything hangs. Only the cursor is moving..

Also on rebooting, system hangs on the first screen after login..

Plz help me to cure this..

Cesare Contini

Is there any chance to have ubuntu on newer Dell machines like Inspiron 1720/1721 by default, please?

Why should I be forced to pay for a product (Windows Vista) that I don't want if I want to buy a Dell new notebook.

Cheers,

Cesare

ATTENTION!!! =)

I've tested a few different Live CD distros on my Vostro 1500 with no success at all. This one works when I boot into safe graphics mode. I know I have sound, touchpad, and keyboard; but I am unsure of just about everything else (I'm at work and can't test).

I'm a complete Linux newbie so I don't have any more specific information.

Thank you for your work on this respin. I would like to see Dell sell Linux preloaded desktops and laptops in Spain.

I work as a consultant on mostly Linux-only clients and this would make my clients happy and my life easier.

I have not bought a Dell Linux laptop, but I have to confess I'm really enthused by this new twist. An adapted version of Ubuntu for Dell laptops makes all users feel the support of the OEM.

This reduces the "cold feeling" of being alone against Linux (yes, there are forums, but they might be hard at times).

I really appreciate your work for users interested in Linux. I'll consider buying it soon, if you manage to bring it to the missing countries of Europe.

I just got a 1720 last week.  When I ordered, I did not know Linux was an option.  Has anyone tried to install the remastered version on a 1720?  I tried OpenSUSE, but the install program does not like something about the file format for some reason.  Anyone got any suggestions?

John

We want Dell's Pc with Linux also on Italy!!!!!!

Will Dell be offering a remastered version of Ubuntu 7.10 for the 1420n when 7.10 is released?

oliver prado
Please make it available for all models!!!

I was wondering how people are installing this?  I have the 1520, with the same hardware selections as the 1420 Dell offers Ubuntu preinstalled on (e.g. Intel video, wifi, etc.)  When I try to "Start or Install Ubuntu" - the first option - with the DVD image, X fails to load.  I was thinking the Intel video would "just work" now, with the driver fixes and all.  Has anyone gotten the live disc to start successfully?  I guess I could try safe graphics mode next...

I use an Inspirion 6000 right now with Ubuntu 7.04. It is an good laptop except the ATI/beryl thing. I was considering an Sony as my next computer. My reasoning being that Dells seem a tad bland, for lack of better words. Even with that in mind, I think an Dell will be next computer too. This solely due to the great Linux support. I refuse to ever go back to dual boot or MS. Thank you for making this an realistic option Dell.

I am currently running the street version of Ubuntu 7.04 on my Inspiron 6000. I'm looking forward to trying the Dell recovery version of the distro as a clean install to see if it better supports my hardware, specifically the video resolution and the Bluetooth interface. Most everything else works pretty well.

Great jog Dell! Keep the good work. I'm going to get a 1420n soon

does this CD contain the drivers necessary for advanced desktop effects (Compiz) and 3d acceleration for games on the 1420N's built in intel video?

Dale: installing from this CD plus performing a system software update will allow you to enabled compiz and 3D games

Thank you very much Dell.

Could that iso image work out-of.the.box in my inspiron 1501?
When R U planning to sell Ubuntu PCs on Latin America?

A Job Well Done...

EdwinF: have not tested this on the 1501. Would expect the experience with the ISO to be the same as if you used the standard 7.04 ISOs from Ubuntu

Congratulation to Dell, good job with the remastered Ubuntu Iso's. This month I bought Inspiron 1420 and is working fine. I am so glad to have a Dell with Ubuntu

Regards,

Dmery

Thank you very much !!!!

I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of my 1420n (ETA 10/5). Will the CD included be the respin or will I still need to download the respin?

Awesome! Thanks...works great!  A million thanks....

Thank you!
Great idea.
I would appreciate kubuntu image as well ;)

Hope they will be offered in more European countries in the future. (*hint*)

John, ALSA support for the Intel HDA chips in your laptops is still somewhat random, as is the expresscard support. If Dell were to release a few more pieces of hardware specs, things would be sooo much simpler. See the below post

http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-desktops/2007-September/000622.html

This  highlights why Dell chose ubuntu as their platform of choice.  I don't think platforms like Fedora and Gnewsense would allow their brand to be tainted with a default install with proprietary modules.

linux-restricted-modules-generic_2.6.20.16.28.1_i386.deb
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic_2.6.20.5-16.28_i386.deb

I guess that for the majority of ubuntu users, they dont use Linux for the freedom, they use it because its not windows.

Using proprietary or non free software sets us back a step, and lets vendors (like dell and whatever partners they have) think that this is OK in Linux.

Poor form Dell, yay for shipping linux, boo for shipping proprietary modules.

I like the ability to purchase Dell computers without Windows and avoid all of the 'junk' that Dell throws in, because I'm just going to install a fresh copy of Vista anyways.

So I'm happy that Dell offers Linux as a choice (meaning I don't pay for the Windows license).

It would be nice if Dell indicated that the machines available with Linux are fully compatible with XP and Vista for those that aren't really going to be using Linux anyways.

Thanks Dell.

Will this work for Dell Inspiron 1000? Could it support SiS 650 display card using XGL?

What is the difference between Dell Ubuntu and Ubuntu?

Will this work for the dell inspiron e1505n?  Bought it with Linux from Dell directly with Linux preinstalled.

thanks that would be nice

I would love to see the Latitude with Ubuntu. I'm planning to buy a laptop shortly. I'm Linux savvy so I could make Linux work on ANY system here at Dell. I am just waiting to see what happens in the future with Linux. =)

Thanks for the great job.

Perhaps the hsfmodem driver could be included so those on dial up would be able to use the modem right away.

This is really great.  Dell's linux development has been pretty good on the enterprise side (look at dkms, for instance), and it's really very cool to see them reacting quickly and growing into the desktop space.

Thanks, Dell.  Y'all are doing a great job despite your upper echelon.

Ubuntu is sweet on my old dell.. I prefer xubuntu release on slower pc's.

Very good!

But pleaseeeee sell your ubuntu-dell in Italy, too!!!!

We are waiting to buy!

That's awesome. I think more computer companies should follow this mold. Speaking of computer companies, what happened to Gateway? I miss the cow spots.

that's bloody great. good job Dell.  at least now we can get Ubuntu in Canada - even though it is not pre-installed directly.  My personal preference would be to purchase clean  Inspiron 530 w/o MS Windows so that none of my $ goes to B.Gates.  Can that be arranged?  Offering Inspiron 530 w/o windows at lower price?

We'll try this on the new Vostro 200, it's been a pain to get Ubuntu working on it so far.

b4d: I would assume that this would also work for the 1520, if the problem is the same.

Please, please do it for the Inspiron 1520

I recently purchased an Inspiron 6400 in the UK - built 5th Sept. (and bloody excellent is it too!).

Do you know if the recovery partiton has this 'Dell tweaked' ISO, or is it the standard Ubuntu release?

Thanks,

 Nick

Thumbs up, Dell.  I'm completely impressed.  :)

don hardaway
I am anxiously waiting for Dell to offer Ubuntu on Latitudes since i am due to buy one now.  How long before it will be offered?

There are currently no plans to offer Ubuntu on Latitude systems

The ubuntuforums thread you specified is for users who have wiped their HDD completely and installed from scratch, would users who are still using the default install from Dell benefit from re-installing using this new image, other than it applying "the drivers and fixes necessary to get the OS up and running with supported hardware on those systems"?  I'm also curious if this new iso implements the fixes for the touchpad's scrolling issues and any other launchpad bugs that have been fixed(specifically for the 1420n)?  Thanks. =]

For Kubuntu install (I'm a kubuntu user myself). Assuming you have broadband access, I would suggest

  1. Use the modified ISO for installation.
  2. Perform a light install of Ubuntu
  3. After install, add "kubuntu-desktop" meta-package to get the kubuntu distro added
Many thanks to the Ubuntu Dell team!

Any chance of a kubuntu version?

Some of us living in countries where factory configured Linux isn't available appreciate the effort.

Michael Ankenbrandt
How well would this work on a Vostro 1400 or 1500?  Is there enough similarity between the hardware models to make it a better starting point than the standard Ubuntu disks?

No plans for a Kubuntu version right now, but we'll provide information soon on how we made the ISOs that you may be able to use to make your own with Kubuntu

So nice !

Now we can have an almost pre-installed, working out of the box Ubuntu Dell laptop worldwide available !

Thank you !

Will this remastered disk work with a Vostro series notebook? I just ordered mine :)

We have only tested this on the systems we support, but it should provide at least an equal experience to the standard Ubuntu images. We be good to receive feedback on how it works with other systems

Great job guys.

Well I guess the former was not doing so well Inspiron 1420 so the need to "Remaster". good move anyway.

this is a good idea.
