Simplifying Information Technology

I had the chance to talk to Glen Keels from our Commercial Server team for a preview of some of the developments we'll be discussing moving forward. Next week, Michael and other Dell executives will host a webcast at 10:30am Central time Pacific Time (my apologies—LM) on Monday next week to talk about how advanced storage technology is evolving to become more accessible small and medium businesses. Beyond that, we'll be sharing more details around how Dell will continue our focus on simplifying IT for businesses of all sizes.

In this vlog, Glenn explains how consolidation and virtualization will be a key part of that strategy. Beyond next week, there will be much more to come—we'll soon be launching an Enterprise group blog that will feature Glenn and other members of the team who will blog about server, storage and corporate client topics.

This all sounds great, but why is it that some of the SMB sales reps don't seem to understand this?  I would say that in order to make the virtualization push really happen you need to cross train your sales people.  Make sure they know storage technology, as well as virtualization.  It doesn't do me any good to virtualize my servers if I don't know how to implement a storage method that can grow at the same if not faster rate than my application servers.

Dell may not have an "army of consultants", but you sure do have several people on a "sales team".  I understand the logic behind it...you want each of them to have more technical knowledge of their specific area of product.  Thats great, but if you can hype up a product you had better be able to produce the product.  In the last couple of years my company has seen the build times for our machines from from 1-3 days to 2-3 weeks.  What happened with that.  How can I plan for a new employee to start and have a computer on time when the build and ship times have change so drastically?

Cancelling Order
I ordered a laptop and 24 inch LCD and they can't deliver either.  For the last 2 days I have been checking the account on the web site and it's been undergoing "routine maintenance" that will only take a "few minutes".  A computer company that can't even get thier own web site running properly.  AMAZING!
 
hmm.. a company that can´t deliver almost anything at this moment is talking about Simplifying IT? thats cool. How can anybody trust you in the Server and Storage Area, if you can´t be even trusted in those simple things?
