XPS 700 Motherboard Exchange Program is Here

Sorry for the delay. I know this date has been a long time coming for many of you. We're finally here. If you are an XPS 700 or XPS 710 customer interested in this program, here's the URL you've been waiting for:

www.XPSUpgradeProgramDell.com

Terms and conditions may vary by region. If you are a customer in Asia Pacific, Japan or Latin America, you will informed of these differences at time of order.

I'm still working to address some of the questions I've been receiving from you. Will provide an update to this post as soon as I can.

To all of you who have waited for this program, thanks for your continued support.

Update 8/14—3:30CDT: I need to clarify the eligibility cutoff date for XPS 700 and 710 customers. This program applies to any XPS 700 or 710 customers who purchased their systems on our before June 30, 2007. The XPS team decided to extend that date from the original deadline that I had communicated in this blog post. My apologies for not correcting the cutoff date with the new June 30, 2007 date.

Several XPS 710 customers like theEconomist and Kurtis and gEORGE have asked for pricing details. Pricing will vary by region, but pricing for the hardware kit will not exceed $250 USD + tax and shipping, and on-site service installation will not exceed $150 USD. The on-site service installation includes installation of the motherboard and necessary parts in the hardware kit, plus the processor, if ordered.  In some countries outside of the US and Europe, customers will be required to purchase the on-site service and will not be permitted to perform the upgrade themselves.

Folks like Pointguard1122, Gbakmars (in an e-mail to me) and CHSIsupplier have asked when we will ship motherboards. Ultimately, it may vary by region, but it should be about three weeks from the time you submit your order to when you will have the hardware kit in your hands. For customers who are having the hardware kit installed by Dell's on-site installation service, installation dates may Add to that 3 week timeline.

Readers like Anubis, CoMeader and Pointguard1122 asked if customers can keep their original motherboards. If you are an XPS 710 customer who is purchasing the XPS 720 motherboard, you do not have to return your motherboard. XPS 700 customers are asked to return their original board, Dell will provide a return airbill and packing materials for your original motherboard.

Other folks like Rraallpphh13  and others have asked about limited warranties. First off, all XPS 700 customers who purchased their systems before June 30, 2007 are eligible for this program, until it expires on October 13, 2007-even if their system is no longer covered by the Dell limited warranty. All XPS 710 customers are eligible to purchase the hardware kit or the hardware kit with on-site service until the program expires on October 13, 2007. The XPS hardware kit is considered add-on new hardware under Dell's limited warranty and that means the warranty duration is 1 year or 90 days (depending on the region) or the remaining balance of the system limited warranty, whichever is greater. The terms of this limited warranty vary by region. Details can be found on your regional support.dell.com website, under the Warranty Information section.

While I'm on the subject of limited warranties, customers like Will and scarmine have asked if doing the install themselves will void the Dell limited warranty. Doing the install yourself will not void your Dell limited warranty. If you feel comfortable doing the motherboard upgrade yourself, feel free to. Jon went a step further and asked if he could still receive on-site installation from a Dell technician if he starts the upgrade process, but can't finish it. Yes, anyone who starts the upgrade process can contact XPS Technical Support (see next paragraph) at any time during the self-install upgrade process. Beyond that, customers who wish to set up on-site installation afterwards can send an e-mail to the XPS Upgrade  Program Mailbox.

To contact XPS Technical Support, customers in the United States can call 1-800-232-8544. Customers outside the United States can do the following to find the appropriate phone number:

  • Go to support.dell.com
  • Choose Contact Us
  • Choose Technical Support
  • Choose Call Technical Support
  • Look for the listing for XPS Support

Other customers like Roberth Andersson asked if things like the H2C liquid cooling hardware,1 kilowatt power supply, or upgraded video cards could be purchased to be part of the on-site installation. The on-site installation only covers the installation of parts from the hardware kit, and QX6700 processors purchased by XPS 700 customers as part of the exchange program. The QX6700 processors are available to XPS 700 customers at a price equal to 25% off the current Electronics & Accessories price for that processor.

Direct2Dell readers like Deadites have asked how the system will show on support.dell.com. After the upgrade, it will still show up as an XPS 700 when you log onto the site. However, we have taken steps to reflect the upgrade on Dell internal tools to show that your system has been upgraded as part of the XPS 700 Motherboard Exchange Program.

Customers like Dave F, Rraallpphh13 and Xecuter2 have asked what processors will be supported. One thing I should have made clear: the XPS 720 board is backward-compatible: If you have a Pentium D or an E6300 or E6400 processor, those will work fine in your new board.  I listed current processors in this post, and also mentioned that we are still looking into the possibility of supporting the QX6850. Related to that, some are asking about 1333MHz front side bus support. Our XPS development team is working on an XPS 720 BIOS update that we believe will support processors that operate at the faster front side bus speed. It's too early for me to talk about Penryn support.

Readers like Kong57, Chris and Xecuter2 all asked me about where to buy the Corsair memory that we sell as an option with XPS 720 systems. Here in the United States, you can purchase it through Dell Electronics & Accessories here. The link is DDR2 800MHz memory that can be overclocked to 1066MHz.

Lionel,

The board I got from dell was bad. I waited until my semester ended at my college to install the board myself. I have been trying to get Dell to replace it since just after thanksgiving. My XPS has no warrenty, and even though the parts have a 90 day warrenty Dell is basicly telling me they will not exchange it. Please help me. I will be totaly lost without this PC, and I can't afford to replace the board right now myself.

Ordered on Thurday, Oct 11th no call, email..nothing.  Normal?

Hello,

I only just heard of the XPS 700 motherboard exchange program.  To my regret, though, I've noticed that the application deadline was yesterday.  Is there any chance that Dell might extend this deadline?

Thank You,

Cam

Tommy:  Thanks.  For anyone who needs Vista reactivation, I ended up calling microsoft at 1-888-571-2048 and entered the long number obtained by right clicking on my computer, going to properties, then going to activate windows (with my internet unplugged), then going to phone support page that gives you the long number.  It will fail, and the frustrating auto phone support will finally give you the option of talking to someone with an Indian accent.  That person will ask you a bunch of questions, then give you back a long number to enter if you answered all the questions with satisfaction.  Then your Vista will be activated (hopefully).  There might be a better way to do it, but that is what I ended up doing.

You don't need to pay Microsoft to re-activate your vista.  Call the number given and they do it 4 free.

I successfully upgraded my motherboard and did a clean install, but now Vista thinks that another computer is using my Vista activation.  I am using the same CPU.  What do I do?  Pay $59 to Microsoft for support and hope they allow me to reactivate?  Ouch!

Dear friends,

Pop up and virus have been giving trouble me,I had installed webroot software, it did not help at all. my computer is Dell XPS 200 desktop, please help me how it stop this probem. before I had same problem,I lost my laptop. I really appreciate your kind cooperation

thank you.

<QUOTE> Other than having to replace a cable (which was a royal pain, and undocumented) the upgrade was easy given Dell's serviceable chassis design.

Tho' really, I'm still ticked at having to route a cable under the drive bays and PS.  </QUOTE>

GB, did you board come with a failty thick installation guide?? If so, had you read it closely, it clearly states that routing the new cable under the PSU is NOT necessary.

I submitted the request this saturday, so far no phone call, email, or notification on my dell account.  No need to post this, I just want to know if this is typical?

I submitted the form on August 14 and got it on the 23rd and it worked out of the box, so I'm happy. Other than having to replace a cable (which was a royal pain, and undocumented) the upgrade was easy given Dell's serviceable chassis design.

Tho' really, I'm still ticked at having to route a cable under the drive bays and PS.  Everything else was snap and go, and it would have taken me 20 minutes instead of an hour and a half.  Meh, free motherboard, I can't complain. :)

Thank you to Lionel and all Dell Support involved:

I received my new 720 mobo Friday.  Thank you again for supporting your customers and the XPS line.  I'm sure this comes as a huge financial hit to the corporation, but it was the right thing to do.  I'm hoping to install the new mobo over the 3 day weekend coming up.  But if I don't get the chance I may not make the 14 day return window!  Thanks again, Mark

I am confused.  I ordered a XPS 710 a few days ago (delivery expected by 9/9/07).

1) Am I getting the old and apparently flawed 590 motherboard?  If so, what is the logic in Dell shipping something that has been proven to be flawed?

2) If so, would I be able to [or SHOULD I] cancel the 710 order and order the newer 720 (basically as the 710 was equipped?)

3) If I cannot cancel the order without a penalty, could the upgrade be done at the factory before delivery?  There is about 2 weeks before it is suppose to be received.

3) What, specifically, is the penalty for not purchasing the upgrade (assuming you have no intentions of upgrading components since everything should run OK on the ordered configuration)?

This is a very interesting forum...I wish I had found it before ordering!

Originally, Dell Accessories only listed the Corsair 800 Mhz memory but now it also shows a 1066 Mhz version. Are both of these compatible with the exchange motherboard? Is there any advantage to getting the 1066 vs. getting the 800 and overclocking it?

Mike: In reality, you don't need to upgrade any of you existing components. All of them should work fine.

When you are ready to upgrade other parts, the 720 board supports fast memory (DDR2 800MHz like the Corsair Dominator can be overclocked to 1066MHz), much faster processors like the X6800 dual core and the QX6800 quad-core Extreme processor, and more.

What you getting is a platform that will support newer, faster technologies. When you're ready to upgrade certain components, you can.

hi ,i recieved new mobo ,was wondering do i need to upgrade memory and or harddrive , my xps700 ,is a 3.0 dualcore  pentium D ,geforce 7900 gtx

Thanks Chris C! Now I dont have to be so nervous next time I open my Dell bill....

It's been a week now, and i didn't get a call or e-mail from Dell.

...So is anyone actually getting any call backs? It's been a week now since i placed the order...

If i remember right te charge is just a record for dell you should see a refund when they get the parts back.  if you have has service on your computer before look at the order history and you will notice a charge and a refund on your account

Chris C.: Just to be clear, if you are an XPS 710 customer who purchased the hardware kit, you will not need to send your original motherboard back.

If you are an XPS 700 customer, we will not bill you for your original system board.

i ordered my upgrade on Tuesday last week and still havent been contacted by dell i have a xps 700. i ordered the motherboard and free installation, does this mean that i won't get a call from dell because i haven't payed for it?

Got an e-mail order confirmation. I submitted for the dell onsite install option, however, the order showed customer install!!?? Also, Its showed charges of $350.00. I bought my XPS700 on 12/29/06. What gives??? Please clarify, Thanks

WAIT WAIT WAIT WHAT IS HAPPENING??!?!!?

I got an email saying they are charging me $347?! But it says revenue adjustment for payment method

Does that mean they refund it back? Or maybe they dont really charge you?

jason humphrey

Why am I being charged for 250(+fees) for the upgrade kit?  And I have an xps 700 purchased back in last November of '06?

I just received an email notifying me of that.  It does not even mention the fact I wanted to purchase the 6700 chip.  I have not received a phone call yet.

And all contact numbers result in phone hangups and the "phone voice" asking for business info.  I realize some businesses might want xps's, but seems like you would have a "special" line for xps upgrade customers.

DELL,

Over the last several months as this program was unveiled, I've read multiple times that the XPS 700 owners would KEEP the original motherboard.  Now as I understand it, I have 14 days to return the old mobo.

My question is:  What happens if I do not return the old mobo in the 14 day timespan?  Is Dell going to charge my preferred account for the part?  When I signed up for the program, I chose the 'do it yourself' option, as I did not want to wait 6-8 weeks minimum to get someone out to my house to install the mobo.  However, I am not at all familiar with the XPS case, and I figure changing out the mobo will take me much longer than average (I have built my own PCs in the past, but due to the proprietary nature of this case, it does not look to be nearly as straight forward).

Lastly, why now are we being told we have to return the old mobo?  How could this be efficient in terms of saving money for Dell?

30 days would have been much more acceptable.  14 I feel pressure to get this exchange done and I wish Dell had never stated we could keep our mobos if this were not  to be the case.

Hi, i would appreciate a response as i have posted two questions on this forum with no response, i have also emailed dell and spoken to a tech guy, all no resonse.

1) i am not moaning about the price or anything like that,so don't jump on the "i'v been waiting for month for dell to sort the xps 7*0 problem " band wagon.

All i want to know is...

I purchased my xps 710 system on july 2nd 07, two days after the cut off point... why can't i buy the upgrade? you would think that the cut off point is the point dell stopped using the old motherboard. if not and they are still using it why do i not qualify for the upgrade. I just spent £1400 on this tower system and now people that purchased the same system two days earlier get the option to have a faster more upgradable motherboard.

?

Lionel

I have a few questions that I really would appreciate a response on.

1. Do you think it would be possible for the calling Dell rep to use a Dell Preferred Account as payment?  I am a 700 owner and chose to get the QX6700 processor.

2. I put in for the upgrade as soon as the link went live.  At what point should I call, e-mail, or resubmit if I am not called by a Dell rep?

Thanks!
Dan

I have signed up for the program (for my XPS 700) and chosen to upgrade to the QX6700 processor.  I know we are required to return the old motherboard, but do I get to keep my E6600 processor that I'm replacing with the QX6700.  I assume yes, we keep the old processor, and we need to make sure it doesn't get shipped back to Dell.  Am I right?

How do XPS 700 customers determine ship date? Are we going to get an email?

Thank you Lionel.

My apologies. Maybe I missed something.  I thought the post you linked to, did not specifically state that we could not purchase the H2C...just stated that it could not be part of the onsite service:

"Other customers like Roberth Andersson asked if things like the H2C liquid cooling hardware,1 kilowatt power supply, or upgraded video cards could be purchased to be part of the on-site installation. The on-site installation only covers the installation of parts from the hardware kit, and QX6700 processors purchased by XPS 700 customers as part of the exchange program. The QX6700 processors are available to XPS 700 customers at a price equal to..."

I would install it if it was compatible with the upgrade board. I want to overclock...and would like the quiet cooling solution.

Thanks for clarification on the x6800 extreme

I appreciate the response.

If I order the more affordable Q6600 will the at home installer instal this processor?.

Also how does the Corsair Ram compare to the orriginal 700 ram?

Lionel,

you mentioned that XPS customers will see the new MB upgrade reflected in Dell's service tag database. I was wondering, what if said customer requested an upgrade kit but for some reason (e.g. lack of time or whatnot) doesn't upgrade? Will Dell still support the old MB in that case (pun intended ;)...)?

thx.

Michael Fraser

Lionel,

Thank you.  More.

Because of your help, I have finally received a motherboard replacement in line with this program, and I have to say it's rather amazing.  Although I know my situation isn't typical, I am thrilled to see a 200% increase in framerate (from 58ish to 154) in my favourite 3D application, but I can also now get correct information regarding my processor, memory and system configuration from my favourite diagnostic and benchmarking utilities.

This replacement has taken my disappointing XPS 700 purchase, and transformed it into an attractive and viable XPS 720.

I would also like to thank Chantale and David from the customer support side, as their assistance in this process has also been invaluable.

I don't usually gush, and as anyone who has read my previous postings can attest, I was not a happy customer.

That changed yesterday - thank you again for making sure I got the help I needed, Lionel.

Michael Fraser
Finally happy.

Has anyone checked out the $40 rebate on the 2GB corsair Ram for the 720?

$144 for 2Gb is not bad.

 http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&cs=&k=dominator+memory&cat=prod

People wanting the H2C cooling kit. Try calling Dell Spare Parts and purchase it from them. I don't know what the p/n for the kit is, but if you call the XPS tech support team they might be able to provide it for you.

My xps 700 came with the pentium d proc, is the 720 board compatible with that? If not, whats a good and also affordable proc to get?

"Also, what's with requiring XPS 700 owners to send their original board back?  Again, they are PAYING FOR THE BOARD.  ASUS doesn't ask me for my old board back when I purchase an upgrade from them."

Maybe you should learn to read MrEvil. It's called a motherboard EXCHANGE for a reason. XPS 700 customers are given the chance to EXCHANGE their motherboards FOR FREE to a newer one. Dell isn't going to just give you another motherboard so you can have two.

Also you XPS 710 customers should quit complaining. Dell isn't forcing you to upgrade. You're lucky they're even giving you the opportunity for an upgrade.

3danym8r: Don't think that's the case... let me check and I'll let you know.

Lionel,

I am very pleased with the program....BUT!....I have asked these questions several times and received no answer...this is getting very frustrating.

1) Can we (xps 700 customers) purchase the H2C Cooling system for the 720 board?

2) Does the new board support the x6800 core 2 extreme? I haven't seen that processor mentioned.

These can not be tough questions to answer.

Waiting patiently....AGAIN!

1) No... I mentioned this in my update to this post.

2) Yes, the 720 board support the X6800 Extreme processor.

While I do like the fact that Dell is giving customers the option to upgrade their system, the implementation is attrocious.  $250 for the motherboard isn't unreasonable.  Though it is higher than other fuller featured 680i motherboards the fact you get to keep all of your exisiting warranty does make up for that $50 difference.

However, the terms and the "eligibility" for this program is horse-hockey as is the $150 installation charge considering what us DCSE field techs get out of that (unless you guys are paying project call rates).  These customers have to pay for the boards, why put in the "Must be purchased before..." stipulation?  Does it really matter when they purchased their system since they're shelling out enough to buy an ATX 680i motherboard and case?  Also, what's with requiring XPS 700 owners to send their original board back?  Again, they are PAYING FOR THE BOARD.  ASUS doesn't ask me for my old board back when I purchase an upgrade from them.

You guys need to rethink your strategy on this whole upgrade business.  It's a great dis-service to the customers.  If you don't want to do this the right way, don't tout the XPS 7x0 series as being upgradable.

Since this week, Dell Community Forum Mods have merged all forums into a big pile of junk.

There is no way I will spend time wading through a lot of posts to find the ones I want.

Dell might as well have just removed them entirely that mess them up like they did.

I for one and as angry about this as the lies Dell told about the XPS 700.
Regardless of reason I and many others will simply have to stop contributing to the forums.

Steve... or anyone who received the e-mail.

Please tell us who the e-mail came from so I can make sure my spam-blocker let's it through!  Thanks for the info as well.

TIA

Lionel-

I just talked to my sales rep, since I am a business customer, and he told me he got charged back for the Mobo. In other words he started out negative $250 for the day through no fault of his own on an order this old.

I really do not think that is a fair thing to do to the sales folks, especially since some reps are in that dedicated XPS sales. Those guys could get absolutely killed.

Is the new 720 owners manual that will come with my upgrade for vista? Do I have to reinstall the OS after the upgrade or can I use the computer without reinstalling the OS after the upgrade? If I have to reinstall the OS can I use my vista upgrade DVD?

I am going to buy the Q6600 Processor. currently my XPS 700 is a 2.4 Duo core running 2gb DDR2 at 667mhz will this memory work with the new cpu and the new 720 MB or do I need to purchase new memory if so what speed 533?

Pat: Your existing memory will work fine with the Q6600 processor. No need to replace it unless you want to overclock the memory.

All (and GBAKMARS)

Need to alert the upgraders...  I'm one of the original purchasers of the XPS 700 system on the 3rd day it came out, so I jumped at the opportunity to accept the full upgrade and appreciate what Dell is trying to do.

Now, the information provided to me in the process was that I was to receive a telephone call to either my main or backup telephone number within 10 days of making the online form request.   Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Dell requesting my credit card information:

"HI. I am XXXXXXXXX with the Dell XPS upgrade program. I am needing to place the order for the motherboard, install and processor. I am needing your creditcard # for the charge of the processor.

Thanks
XXXXXXXX

Small-Medium Business- Order Processing/Issues Resolution Dell Inc Direct 512-728-7819 or 1-800-766-3355 ext 87819"

I'm not ingnorant enough to provide credit card information in e-mail, particularly when the process indicates that I should be receiving a telephone call.  So, I attempted to contact Dell through both numbers... then tried through the switchboard.  These telephone numbers do not lead to any specific rep....  I e-mailed the rep listed (using manual typing, not "reply" to see what is going on, and whether this is a fraud attempt.

Please be careful in your communication folks... never provide your credit card numbers in e-mail...  I cannot believe that this e-mail was sent from Dell, as they likely have strict guidelines regarding credit card information, and the e-mail would have provided working phone numbers and extensions.

 --Steve3G

When I realized how long it would be to recieve 680i mobo, I went ahead and bought an evga 680i a1. However, I also had to buy a new case (cm stacker 830), a new psu, and 2gb dominator. Even though I spent more than what I would have paid for the program, I  didnt have to wait. I'm still a DELL fanboy though--prob for life.

Hehe. So anywant want a used xps 710 case and a h2c cooling unit?

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=8467

Intel’s X38 Express chipset Motheboard

1. introduces PCIe 2.0

2. The chipset also supports dual full-speed PCIe x16 slots.

3. Intel X38 Express chipset only supports DDR3 memory. However, motherboard vendors disagree and intend to release X38 Express based motherboards with DDR2 memory support also.

4. Expect motherboards based on the Intel X38 Express to pop up in retail next month. Estimates cost of entry around $200.

All new technology $200  vs dell $250+tax+s&h one =  around $280-290 of course not to mention $150 installation feed.

Yeah dell discounted soon to be outdated motherboard price seems "Fair"

Thanks Lionel, I signed up the other day. I can't wait to make my XPS 700 a XPS 720 and eventually upgrade my CPU to a Quad Core.

Thanks again Dell, you've just earned a customer for life!

Remember everyone these are BTX mobo's not ATX.

TopologyGuy

Will the SLI connector come with the new motherboard?

 thanks

Ummmm...

Im not sending my MB back until I am ready to send it back.  14 days.no sir.....we were told (700 owners) that we could keep our boards, now thats changing...

Im calling a major no-no on that one Lionel....you renegged on the gift cards.....I dont know that this new board isnt a flake in my system.

I really would like a comprehensive list of supported processors and memory including front side bus speeds etc... This motherboard surely must be capable of RAM >800 FSB.

What RAM types are supported by the new board? Does it only support up to DDR800 or can we go beyond that to a DDR 1066 or 1200? I have noticed that many people have asked about what types of memory the new board will support but still no answers.

What if you have Dell Gold support and premium coverage. Can you get free install?

I would like to Upgrade to the

QX6850

instead of the QX6700 with the same discount. When will DELL be selling the QX6850???

Lionel & Dell:

Thanks for all your hard work in making this happen.  Also, many thanks to the DCF forum members who kept focused on the goal and spent their time and energy to help their fellow XPS 700 bretheren.

- Another happy XPS 700 owner and still a Dell loyalist.

DELLNOTMORE - No worries, good discussion is never an attack. We both have our opinions and that is a good thing.

Obviously none of us know the actual costs here. But you also have to remember there is the cost to assemble the kit in there as well. Likely not huge but still. I think $250 sounds pretty much right, though that $150 makes me cringe. So if I had a 710 I would buy the kit and do the work myself.

A few other points. As said above the 710 owners had full info available to them. That is a big difference when you look at what the 700 owners had. Kind of a, you went into this with your eyes open, thing. Also, the current board is ok, not great, but not exactly a "you can't game on it at all!"

And a point I made in another comment section, after I made this post I looked closer. The cheapest Mobo that is of this FSB is not the $160 one. It is $200. What is cost? Couldn't tell you.

The thing is the 700 owners are getting this because we did not get what we paid for. The 710 owners are getting the opportunity to purchase an "Upgrade Kit" not a fix-it kit. I would not be surprised if down the road that kit, and others as we move on, shows up on the site at $350 or so. And when the next great mobo comes out I will likely buy it at that too. But that is just me.

To answer another question out there I talked to an S&P rep and he said $600 for the H2O. Seems high to me though. <shrug>

Last point is this, as I said above about this being an "Upgrade Kit" for 710 owners that does not mean they should not make a profit on it. They said discounted, not at cost. You got what you paid for, and now they are giving you an OPTIONAL upgrade path, making good on their claim of this being an upgradeable system. But even if they are making a profit on that part, in the end they are losing plenty just taking care of the 700 owners.

I can understand your disappointment, but the anger and hatefulness seems a bit much.

 3

Im also interested to know of the E6850 processor will work on this new motherboard.

DELLNOMORE: I have both XPS700/710. I am going to take advantage of XPS700 free upgrade. I won't pay $250 to upgrade XPS710 because I just bought it about five or six months ago. Beside, the performance might not be a huge different. Anyhow, what I was saying is people who own XPS710 have option to upgrade their gaming system. Dell makes this program avaiable for XPS710 users for a price that you must willing to pay. As for $400 computer, perhaps most of us won't buy $400 computer for themselve. In addition, we buy graphic card that cost alone around $400. Was that the price you pay for your graphic card? Well, I just don't think someone can stand using low-end system when you have used high-end system.

So, if you think you can make use of your $400 better by buying new 680i board and a case with powersupply, go ahead and start shopping. You make the right chioce for yourself. It's better than posting your anger here. Rather we all should thank Lionel and the group that makes this program happen.

Well this is not what I had expected. I bought an XPS 710 on August 12 from the outlet thinking I'd be good to go with the new mobo, but it looks like you would have had to purchase the system before June 30th. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Randy Wessels

I don't understand why the XPS 710 owners feel like they were 'wronged'.  The XPS 700 owners were the ones that had to wait months and ended up with a chipset with a few features disabled.  XPS 710 owners didn't have to wait and information about the chipset was freely availble.  So before another XPS 710 owner crys a river about $250 being too much, remember, you are just being included on a program that Dell didn't have to include you on.  Yeah, you can pay less for a 680i board, but you don't have a company like Dell that stands behind their products.  So go whine somewhere else.

-A Happy XPS 700 owner and repeat Dell customer

Also, does this motherboard support RAM with a FSB of 1066 or 1333 rather than overclocking 800 to something higher? Thanks.

Lionel,

Thank you, once again, for your assistance. As a customer who purchased an XPS 700 on May 2006 (and received it on August 2006) I am very happy with the proposed solution. I never received a call for the offer of an upgraded processor nor a "voucher," but I learned to live without.

However, I am concerned about two issues regarding the upgrade program.  I already petitioned for the hardware kit, without the processor.

First, some XPS 700s shipped with 533Mhz RAM.  I understand that this RAM is not supported by the new motherboard.  Consumers who have this memory, I am assuming, will have to buy new RAM by the time the kit arrives. Would this be a correct assumption?

Second, I am concerned about your statements regarding the warranty.  I received my system on August 28, 2006 and my one-year standard warranty expires on August 28, 2007.  However, I purchased a 2-year on-site extended warranty (for a total of three years).  Therefore, my system is under full warranty until August 2009.  As you may agree, I am really not interested in limiting my warranty (which should last until 2009) to one year or 90 days if that is what the new motherboard provides.  Of course, I have no qualms if the warranty of the entire system is respected for the life of the extended period or 1 year after installation of the kit, whatever is LARGER.  Otherwise, I would be trading in a new motherboard for two years (or actually one) of extended warranty.  Why would I void my extended warranty (which costs almost 200$? and provides peace of mind).

I look forward to your comments.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hello, just needed the price for the H2C Liquid cooling hardware....please let me know.  I would like to purchase it seperate from the harware kit.

Thanks for getting this done. Many thanks.

I still would like to know:

1) Can we (xps 700 customers) purchase the H2C Cooling system for the 720 board?

2) Does the new board support the x6800 core 2 extreme? I haven't seen that processor mentioned.

Thanks

Just so everybody is clear on the xps710, non of them include the 720 motherboard even if you order one today you still get the old motherboard that supports a quad core but you dont have the 680i you have the 590 cripled version. "Every xps 710 comes and came with the 590" My source is the actual 710 specs.

Core 2 Duo E6550, E6750, and E6850

Are these processors with the 1333 MT/s FSB compatible? Will the motherboard take one of these processors?

Otherwise I will probably need to buy a E6600 and E6700.

Please reply! Thanks.

I'd settle for a 710 that would POST...  Just had the mobo replaced yesterday and went to turn it on,  won't boot.

I currently have an xps 710, i recieved it two days after the cut off point, it has an base line quad core processor and a single 8800gtx, i would like the extra benefit of upgrading the the h2c motherboard, however as far as i can tell, i.e it won't accept my service tag in the motherboard exchange programme web site, as it states i do not fall under the right catagory?

I have contacted dell uk technical advisers whom stated that they didn't know why, i said to them that you would presume the cut off date meant that all pc's made after that date would already incorporate the new motherboard? i also asked them to confirm what kind of motherboard was in my system and they didn't know that either.

so to date i'm a little in the dark, does my xps already have the new motherboard or does it not, and if not why do i not qualify for the upgrade?

regards mick

Yes, Lionel, I also appreciate your time in keeping us updated, and I also appreciate you answering my question in your update.

I know alot of 710 customers are unhappy because of the price, but the way I see it is that Dell considered them, and that should at least mean something to the customers.

Arlen (Arlen1)

Lionel,

Congratulations to you and your cohorts!

Dell Delivers.  Dell honors its promises.  If Dell makes a mistake, Dell offers a generous remedy.

There are few computer comanies that would do as much as Dell has done to "make it right" for its XPS 700 customers.  Kudos to you, Lionel, and all those at Dell who care enough to "do the right thing".

One of the learnings from this experience is to recognize that an upgrade kit like this has such great value for the customer and could open up great marketing possibilities for Dell.  If Dell were to make it a policy to offer motherboard upgrade kits for its "top-of-the-line" computers each time it introduces a newer model, it could bring new customers to Dell and it could generate an entirely new source of revenue for the company.  Has Dell considered this idea?

Again, thanks for keeping the promise!

I just want someone from Dell to admit that they are in fact profiting alot from the new motherboard, specially since all they had to do was make some extra kits aside from the ones they are giving away for free, they shouldnt try to be profiting so much from something that was their fault since they didnt supply a top of the line motherboard since even today they are shipping the 570/590 motherboard with the xps710. Their mistake is going to cost them since they are able to please some xps700 customers which shouldnt be so happy since it took a year for this to happen, and everybody knows how quick computers change. I also bet a bunch of people wont make the same mistake by shopping a dell, which seems high end but a bunch of parts are limping OEM parts they make on their own to save money, other companies give you the same part but actually improve it like factory overclocking it and adding features instead of removing them. I hope everybody thinks twice before they buy a "High end PC" If you can call it that.

Lionel,

Thanks, I must say that as I have followed this saga both through the blog and its associated comments, the entire Dell team has done a good job. Although I have my gripes, as I am sure you do with the whole right hand/left hand not talking to each other within the Dell organization.

Communication is the key and it is appreciated.  From my own experience, I can say that Dell has addressed every problem or issue I have had soon if not immediately. Keep up the good work.

So is the cutoff date for the motherboard exchange still June 30, 2007? Lionel mentions that it was extened but wasn't June 30 the original cutoff date?

CHSIsupplier

Lionel- that's the most informative post I've seen yet. Thank you for your time on this exchange program (and for the time it must have taken to make that post..lol). After all this, I'll be happy to recommend Dell to others again, although I think I'll be sticking to DIY. You all have done a ton of work to restore some of my confidence in Dell. I can't wait to load this thing with a quad!

Are the 3 postings about the XPS 700 problems meant to push the XPS m1330 problems off of the front page, or just remind us that Dell can't deliver high-end products?

But they do manage to charge high-end prices...

Nathan: That's not the intent at all. Truth is, we have a lot of customers that have been waiting for the XPS 700 Motherboard Exchange Program. It's been pending since March, and we had told customers that August 13 was the launch date back in July.

I am a happy XPS 700 owner and i than you Dell and everybody that is behind this program for making this possible.

I only have one question. Now thats i will have the new 720 MOBO will i be able to upgrade to the corsair dominotor DDR2 800 mhz and take advantage of its full performance?

Alan: Yes. After the upgrade, you'll be able to upgrade to Corsair Dominator DDR2 800MHZ memory that can be overclocked to 1066MHz.

The link to Electronics & Accessories below will get you right to it.

Lionel -

I for one just want to say thanks.  I've requested my upgrade and had a question this morning concerning it.  I e-mailed my question into the address provided and received an answer within an hour.

Already this is going much better then when I placed my initial order for my PC.  I can see that you guys are genuinly putting out an effort to get this right.

Thank you!

Edit:

Switzerland (Schweiz) was just missing when I went with the german language version, it's not missin when choosing english language.

Thanks & Cheers

Lionel, what's with Switzerland, seems to be missing in the dropdown list?

Lionel,

It's been roughly a year since I received my XPS700.  In that time I've scanned almost 10000 slides, edited almost 100 hours of video, played hundreds of hours of games, and run almost all of my unique blend of software seamlessly.  Although I've been generally happy with my XPS700, there's always been that nagging in the back of my mind wondering what the XPS700 could have been.

I want to congratulate you, and all of the others who made this exchange program possible, on resolving this long outstanding issue.  Being able to upgrade to the nVidia 680 chipset (with some limitations), upgrade my memory, and upgrade my processor makes me believe again in my purchase of a Dell system.  There may be things that I or others don't like about the program, but I can say that making this right is unique among the PC vendors I work with.

I've seen some of the changes in Dell with the XPS720 launch, and the support of some of the initial issues, that seem to indicate that Dell has indeed learned from the XPS700 problems.  I hope Dell will consider making future motherboards available for purchase to owners of the XPS7__ systems.  I for one would be willing to come back to Dell regularly to upgrade my system with the latest offerings.

I know making an upgradable system is huge change for Dell, but I think it's a potentially profitable one.  I've generally spent $5-7k on a system every 6-7 years and upgraded it periodically (with other vendors).  However, I would be much more willing to spend $1,500 (motherboard, processor, memory, video card) a year with Dell to keep current.  This would mean more money to Dell in the long run and also make it much less likely I would consider other vendors for my big purchase every 7 years.

I would have liked to have bought the processor from Dell (even without the discount) to reward you for your efforts, but I'm not in the market for the QX6700.  Now if you'd offered a choice of the Q6700, the QX6800, or better yet the QX6850) then I would have eagerly signed up for that option as well.

I found a full featured 680i for 159 dollars, anyone know if its compatible with xps 710 chasis or will a new case be required.

I agree with 3danym8r. $250 is not just for motherboard. It includes other componetes. If you all compare motherboard price on newegg, you should have good idea the cost of 680i board.

If you decide to spend $400 on a new computer, go ahead. But I don't think you will be happy after you have been using XPS700/710. $400 is not even enought to buy Nvidia 8800 GTX card!!!

Think before you posting angry thought.... Thank.

Since I own an XPS 710 and I'd be paying for the new mobo, shouldn't I get to keep the old one?

I'd understand that the 700 owners may not be able to, as it's a free exchange for them.

rich821ny: You are correct. XPS 710 customers can keep their original motherboards.

Steven Dowling Jr
Woot for the LOOT!

Quit complaining about the price Dell Dosent even have to offer the upgrade to any one BUT they decided to and they could charge as much as they want being it isnt a recall its a optional upgrade and as lionel said earlyer that the 710 Mother board will support the quad core that wont work in the 700.  Lionel Feel free to correct me!

How do they ship to other countries FEDEX, DHL etc.. ?

How do they ship to other countries FEDEX, DHL etc.. ?

Pointguard1122

Lionel,

Please give us a clear answer to this question.  Do the XPS 700 owners HAVE to return the original motherboard that they have paid for?  We have been told numberous times over the past few months that we could choose to return it to Dell or keep it in case of failure of the new mobo.  The current web site does not state this.  Many have asked about his since plans have been made for the old motherboards based on information given by Dell over the past few months.  We really need this addressed clearly.  Thanks.  I know you have been working hard on this program.

Not a techie, so trying to ge the words right.  Can the 680i mobo support the QX6850 with the 1333fsb?  I know the QX6700 is offered with this deal, but I am really trying to find out what is the best chip this board can support.

Lloyd Hopper

To all European customers...

I filled in the form without having to choose a state and it confirmed ok. Just check to make sure you have selected all other manadatory fiels and drop down choices and its no problem.

So for the XPS 710 owners that are frustrated I have to say something.

1) They extended the option to you, not because they had to, but because they agreed you should have the chance to upgrade.

2) The kit cost is not just a Mobo you know. There are several other parts out there. Plus looking at the prices on Newegg the cheapest Mobo that is a 680i is $160, but the average cost is $229 with a range from that $159 to $300. And again there are other parts in the kit.

3) I am pretty sure that the cost of the install is right at cost to Dell for the on-site support. I know 7 years ago I was told, because I asked, it was $75 per service call, and I am sure it went up since. Plus at least one person complaining about this cost mentioned he could have built his own, so why do you need the service again? I plan on doing it myself even though I could get the free install since I know that my skills are likely much higher than the tech being sent.

4) As I understand it the warranty of the original system stays in affect whether they do the upgrade or you do it. Dell techs habitually walk people through cracking the case open and you do not void the warranty by doing so.

5) Yes for $400 you can buy a new PC. In fact I am about to buy one at that price for my daughter. But do you really think I could game on that? Come on guys, give me a break.

Dell, you cannot make 100% of the people happy 100% of the time. Good job on what you are doing and keep it up. I hope that down the line there will be more availibility to get new Mobos and other things, like the liquid cooling system, even though we will have to pay for it.

Oh and 3 cheers to David and Lionel.

I RECIEVED MY XPS ON THE 2ND JULY 2007, DOES THE CUT OFF POINT MEAN THAT I ALREADY HAVE THE NEW MOTHERBOARD, IF NOT WHY CAN'T I  UPGRADE?

DELL XPS 710 owner

Wow........$400!!!!!

I paid £2100 for this thing 3 months ago, now dell don't even discount the replacement board. Absolutely disgusting!!

Keep your well overpriced motheroard, I for 1 certainly wont buy dell again!!!

The form is broken for all non-US residents. State/Province has no options, and we can't continue without filling it in.

Yup more bs from dell I knew before my xps 710 shipped i was screwed, every other decent company gives you at least a 650i mobo yet dell sticks you with a crippled 590, im definitly never buying anything through and am going to do alot more research and make sure I dont get scrwed over, i mean they charge you 250 to add another 8600gts which you can get for under 180, and they charge you 270 for 2 gibabytes of memory which you can get for 70 dollars and running at same specs. What a rip off.

Just a thought

Ken Stewart :

We want better OC and better chipset too and you need to understand that you can compare this motherboards with the top ones from other manufactures because I can assure you they will not be the tops of the tops ones. Plus dell will crippled them again. Bios.

Option to purchase a 720 hardware kit for $250 USD, plus tax, shipping, handling = means like around 300 dollars plus the 150 plus tax so all together is around $450 - 475 depending on shipping.  and even if it was just $250 they are not discounting anything, they are making profits. they sell 680i motherboards for $140 out there, guess which one will be the one you are and others maybe getting?  and ontop of that crippled.

Enought said.

Hi,

 I can´t use this Form ...

 Program Qualifications

All XPS 700 and 710 purchases made through June 30th, 2007 are eligible for this program.

Why the cut-off on the purchase date?  I just bought a XPS 710 from the Dell Outlet in July 2007 - so now I cannot be part of the upgrade?

Dell comes through!  Long time coming, but much appreciated.  Looking forward to installing my Motherboard over the Labor Day Weekend!!????  Please????

Lionel - Of course, thank you so much.

Why would I want to upgrade my 710 motherboard?  What's so good about the replacement?

Ken Stewart
XPS 710 owners should not be outraged that the motherboard is $250.  The 680i chipset is a very expensive chipset.  Look at the prices online for true 680i motherboards and you will see that the price is not blotted at all.  Lastly, if you are XPS 710 owner, WHY ON EARTH DO YOU WANT THIS MOTHERBOARD?  It is extremely similar to the one that is in your system right now when features are compared.  All this new motherboard gives you is more varied over clocking controls, and you already have quad-core support where as my XPS 700 motherboard only supports first gen Core 2 Duo chips.  If you want to pay for this motherboard go right ahead, however, make sure you keep your stupid impulse purchases to yourself.

10 days .......... the wait ....... lol, but still good job getting this thing going.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... Someone tell me what kind of RAM I need to purchase. And PLEASE post a full list of compatible processors. Lionel help us. Thanks.

YAY!  Now when are you going to post answers to the questions?

well i have had my upgrade due to a failure with my cpu or xps 700 mobo,so dell decided to replace both "xps720 mobo"...at first only the mobo and cpu came but no cables that are required to get full use, they came the following day...all i'm missing now is the rear panel where your ps/2 mouse ect goes as the old one blocks 2 usb ports and the ethernet port...this is getting done tomorrow along with my replacement 7900gs graphics card which had a faulty ram chip on it...XPS mouse pad is in the post as we speak..all in all i'm pleased with it...there is some preformance improvement .......OS re-install IS  must plus flashing your bios to the latest one available

Maybe a little too anxious...

Lionel,

I suspect that a few of us jumped the gun and went to the site before you posted it here. (The link had already been posted in the Dell XPS Community Forum this morning...)  Is it safe to assume that submitting our upgrade request before you posted the link here is ok...?  The confirmation page says that we'll get an order number via email within 10 days... is there any confirmation email before that that our upgrade request was correctly received?

Thanks again for all your work on this.

Anxious: No worries... if you submitted your order earlier today, you're good.

What about the uk?

Michael: As long as you are an XPS 700/ 710 owner on or before June 30, 2007, you will be eligible for the program.

Thanks Dell for making this happen.

Lionel,

The requirement to return the XPS700 motherboard within 14 days was questioned when it appeared in the tech sheet on the previous blog posting.  We were assured through the Forum moderators that this was optional, but the requirement appears again on the replacement signup page as a condition of the motherboard replacement program.  Can you please clarify once and for all if returning the XPS 700 motherboard is a requirement?

My concern is that I don;t think that I will be able to properly install the motherboard, reinstall the OS, load all of my applications and get everything tested within some unkown 14-day window.  In fact the primary reason I'm choosing to do a self installation is that I can then schedult the installation to meet my schedule not som technicians.

 Thanks

Roberth Andersson

I am little sad for this deal, very bad deal, 250 USD for a stripped BIOS 680i motherboard, it's a big shame.

And NO, absolutely no discount for any CPU.

Remember you ALSO NEED faster RAM memory, faster harddisks to make this a complete XPS 710 to 720 upgrade.

CHSIsupplier
Thanks Lionel! I can't tell you how good it will feel to get this new board put in. I won't ask when you expect these to start shipping, because about 40 other people are going to take of that for me! LOL

Wow why would anyone with an xps710 purchase the kit its going to be over 300 after taxes and shipping then you might need the installation is dell trying to make alot of profit through this to make up for their loses, this is the last time I buy a dell I could have gotten a way better pc for half the cost by making it on my own.

YAY!! HOLY CRUD YAY!! ITS HERE!

Like Ram Agram said.... WAITING!!! Lol

Hopefully i can get the black chassis too!

Ouch!! $250 parts + $150 install = $400!!! for 710 Owners..

tphillips63

Yeah and or to see how the fulfillment process goes.
Since we did not order but rather signed up it could be a while.

Thanks Lionel for the post, can't wait for the update on some unclear issues and definately can't wait for the mobo to arrive.  The signup process was clear, concise and worked without problems.

Thanks Lionel! We never doubted you.

Finally the day has come! I do feel bad for those 710 customers who are expected to pay $250 when they could buy a top of the line 680i for less.

Pointguard1122

Thanks Lionel.  We all really look forward to seeing what the latest XPS mobo is capable of compared to 570/590 chipsets.  Thanks for all of your work on this.

Thank You. One thing we MUST KNOW:  How will this impact the warranty if we choose to replace the MB ourselves.

Thanks Lionel!

Kit ordered... now the hard part..
