How to Get Ready for the XPS 700 Exchange Program

Update, 8/13:  The link for the XPS 700 Exchange Program is now live:

www.XPSUpgradeProgramDell.com

We're just a few days away from the XPS 700 Motherboard Exchange program. I've been getting lots of e-mails and comments from XPS 700 and 710 customers. I'm sorry for the delay in getting details out to you. Beyond this blog entry, I'm hoping to have another one that will give you an idea of what to expect before next week. I'll try to answer more questions then.

If you are planning to do the motherboard installation yourself, I encourage you to download this Upgrading Your Computer Tech Sheet and if you haven't watched it already, and to please view this vlog that walks you through the upgrade process. As you'll see, some are basic things you've probably done before if you've ever swapped out a motherboard. Some are not quite as obvious, but making sure you've done these things will help make the process go more smoothly. I hope this post gives folks an idea of what to do in anticipation of the launch day--August 13 next week.

Find Your System Documentation:

The hardware kit will contain a copy of the XPS 720 Owner's Manual. Locate the copy of the XPS 700 Owner's Manual that came with your system. You can either access the HTML version here or download the PDF here (warning: this file is over 20MB).

Find Your Operating System Media:

Dell strongly recommends re-installing your operating system. From the comments in Chris M.'s XPS Desktop General Hardware thread, I know some of you are planning to restore an image of your OS. As most of you already know, there's a chance an image restore will not work—or at the very least, may not work perfectly. See the last paragraph in this post for more details.

To do this, you will need your operating system media that came with your system when you purchased it. If you did not receive an operating system CD or DVD, U.S. customers can visit this link to request backup OS media.

Find Device Drivers and Additional Software Discs

As part of the hardware kit, you will receive the Resource CD (also called the XPS 720 Drivers & Utilities disc) that is specific to the XPS 720. It includes all of the drivers to support the motherboard and integrated components. However, since Dell's peripheral offers change over time, drivers and applications for Dell factory-installed eripherals shipped with your original system may not be included on the XPS 720 Resource CD. Because of this, we recommend that you visit support.dell.com to download the latest drivers for peripherals that were factory-installed in your original system.

Preparing Your Machine (Before the Motherboard Exchange):

  • First step is to back up your personal data. There are several different ways you can go about this, so I won't pretend this is exhaustive. At a high level, most of your personal files are save in the My Documents folder in Windows XP or Vista. If you haven't changed the defaults in Windows XP or Vista, this should capture all Microsoft Office documents, and your digital music, photos and videos. Beyond personal files however, you want to make sure you backup all your e-mail and contacts, and bookmarks for your web browsers. Both XPS and Vista have backup and restore utilities. Here's a link for Windows XP backup utility and here's an XP backup utility-focused StudioDell video. Here's one for Vista users that walks you through using the Backup & Restore Center.
  • Download and flash the BIOS to the latest version, which is version 1.4.1. Although it might seem strange, it helps in the transition.
  • Remove any external USB devices besides the key, mouse and monitor.
  • If you bought any third-party peripherals, please remove them. Dell recommends that you focus on setting up all the hardware you purchase from Dell before installing third-party or aftermarket peripherals you purchased. For example, if you purchased EPP memory separately after you purchased your system, please remove it, and install the memory that you purchased in your original system (if you still have it).

After the Motherboard Exchange:

  • On the initial boot, your system may boot in Manufacturing Mode. If so, the system will attempt to boot to PXE. Once this is complete, you be prompted to exit Manufacturing Mode by pressing ALT+F. (This is expected behavior and does not indicate a HW failure.)
  • If you had a RAID configuration, you'll need to re-enable RAID in the BIOS. To do so, enter the System Setup by pressing F2 when prompted during boot. Scroll to the Drives section and press enter. Highlight the appropriate drive option and set the value to RAID ON. Repeat these steps for each drive in the array. Press ESC until you are prompted to Save the Changes and Exit System Setup.
  • Insert the Operating System media provided with your original system order. On reboot, press F12 when prompted. Choose the option to boot to the optical drive. Dell recommends that you install a clean version of the OS.
  • After completing the install, you may use the Resource CD to install the appropriate XPS 720 drivers and your original recovery media and driver backups to install any peripheral drivers.

Remember that when you replace your motherboard, it's essentially comparable to getting a brand new system. To ensure full compatibility, Dell recommends that you prepare for a full reinstallation of your operating system. This is the best way to be sure that your upgraded system will perform at peak levels. If you've ever built your own system, or swapped out one motherboard for another, you probably have dealt with this before.

Hi Does some-one know how to buy a 1000W PSU for an XPS 720?

I've upgraded my XPS with two 8800GT but current PSU is not sufficient and no-one frol Dell can communicate me the part number or how to buy it...

 Thank for your help

Arron Brown

I need help I was a part of the XPS MB replacement and my onsite tech never showed up. I have tried everything with in dell to have someone replace the motherboard XPS support parts support and no one knows what I am talking about.. Please help!

Will I have any difficulties with Windows Vista validation upon re-installing the operating system following the motherboard swap?

Will Dell be offering a XPS 720 case for sale?

thanks

 Program Qualifications

All XPS 700 and 710 purchases made through June 30th, 2007 are eligible for this program.

Why the cut-off on the purchase date?  I just bought a XPS 710 from the Dell Outlet in July 2007 - so now I cannot be part of the upgrade?

The website posted for the exchange program is at https://xpsupgradeprogramdell.com/Pages/Default.aspx

Had to find out through customer service and just passing the info along.

Speaking of price...

I just"bought" the XPS 710 and then come to read about this motherboard exchange. I call the customer service lines. Not a single person knew about this, nor could point me in the right direction to get a solid answer. I ordered the computer at the beginning of the month and it was not due to be delivered until after the 13th. Thus i thought I could get the motherboard upgrade as part of my computer if I was able to get a hold of someone who knew what they were talking about.

Secondly, and the reason I put the quotes around bought is that I ordered this computer with the understanding that I could get zero percent interest for 12 months. After all it is advertized big and bold throughout the page. I figured well I have extremely good credit, why not. Well then the mail comes and I find out I have been denied this for some high interest program. AGAIN no one in the financial group is there when I call, I am given three, vague days (business or calender, who knows!) to accept or deny the program.  Here in Hawaii we are a bit behind everyone on the work day hours, plus we get the added bonus of paying extra for shipping. And now I have to pay extra interest? This is disingenuous advertizing at best.

I want to know what Dell plans to do about both the motherboard upgrade and the Preferred Account swindle they are trying to get away with. I have not even taken delivery of my XPS and I am furious with this company. An answer of any type would go a long way and may even salvage a customer.

Now that we know all there is about how to install the replacement motherboard, how to install the OS, how to watch the install video, download the owner’s manual, install drivers, install BIOS update, and make a back-up of existing data, when is it time to allow us to sign up for the replacement and get this process started?

Once it was agreed that the XPS 700 mobo was defective, Dell immediately announced that they would correct the problem with an exchange program. (This is good)

However, it took the Dell customer service folks almost a year to put the replacement package together. (This is bad and unbelievable)

Sometime during this year of indecisiveness you'd think that Dell would have had the foresight to ask us to register with them for the replacement program.  Instead we are all waiting like obedient little children waiting for Dell to craft the next step of this unbelievably simple task.

How hard is this…

1.     For those of us who are comfortable with changing out the motherboard ourselves. Send us the replacement package right now.

2.     For those of us who are uncomfortable with changing out the motherboard ourselves, Allow us to schedule a Dell tech to come over to install it.

Folks this is not brain surgery.  I will continue to use Dell (our company has purchased close to 1m in Dell products over the past years) because overall they do make a good product and provide good support.  However, I question the qualifications of the Bozo in charge of this mobo replacement fiasco. What a shameful disapointment.

Sincerely, Joe Waldin

What kind of RAM does the new motherboard support? Do I need to replace the RAM from my XPS 700?

Xecuter: No, you won't have to replace RAM. The XPS 720 does, however, support Corsair Dominator DDR2 6400 memory if you're interested in overclocking.

Calm down people, even I never gets any questions answered, but I still survive with a smile.

Why shall they publish a price ?  They will publish it on monday (not many hours left), I suppose also that this upgrade kit in real was only meant for XPS 700 customers to avoid further warranty issues with their bad motherboard. We XPS 710 owners got also an offer so we would not get a worse machine than those with the older XPS 700 machine. So be happy for any kind of offer.

But of course, I can't stop hoping for a good offer since this machine has already been very expensive.

People, remember that this upgrade kit will NOT make your machine to become a XPS 720, first most will maybe have their weaker 750W with too less 6-pin connectors for dual 8800 cards, also you still need to purchase faster Corsair memory and two 10.000 RPM SATA harddisks.

the prices will more than likely be on the website when it's launched on the 13th

I was wondering if we forgot about the 710 owners, like myself who have been waiting since the 19th of July for an update on how much the kit will cost? The exchange is just a few days away and still no info for 710 customers. I don't think this kind of wait for that information is necessary. Not to mention i'd be pretty upset if there wasn't a "discount" on the new mobo since i bought this system in the middle of the mobo exchange planning. So, still waiting...

hmm..the 1.4.1 bios is this the same as the A02 bios that i was told to download by dell xps tech in the uk ?

our service tags will stay the same...our xps700 systems will be know as an xps720 after this program has been completed..my system has already been upgraded to an xps720 due to motherboard/cpu floating failure..just missing the rear i/o panel and the xps mouse pad "one graphics card is being replaced due to a memory fault on it" which will be done on monday...i wish all Dell XPS700/710 customers all the best with there upgrades and hope you have less trouble that i had.....

can we, xps710 owners, buy the new mobo and chip with dell finance. if so, would we qualify for the normal xps no interests offer?

donald: Yes, you can use your Dell Finance card to purchase the hardware kit, but the purchase will not be eligible for promotional rates that we may be offering.

Lets say that I decide that I can install the motherboard myself, but then realize after it arrives that it's a bigger task then I had originally planned.  Will I have the option of having a tech come and install it for me, or once I choose that I would like to do it by myself, is it pretty much out of Dell's hands afterwards?

Roberth Andersson

Can you please give me an answer if you will make it possible for me to purchase the 1000W PSU ?

I didn't had that option when I purchased in Sweden, they didn't had the "red edition" and also told me that my machine would be SLI prepared completely with my at the same time bought 8800 GTX card if I bought later another one, but when I looked, the PSU in my XPS 710 had only three power cords.

I has been calling Dell everywhere and gets no answer, it seems that no one wants to fullfill that promise and not even sell the spare part.

I bet I can't be the only one who needs the better PSU for dual 8800 cards.

Thanks a lot advance!

 /Roberth

Just so I understand.  Even though I'm running Vista, via the upgrade I got from Dell when I purchased my XPS700.  It's recommended by Dell to reinstall XP and upgrade back to Vista?  When I install the new board.

I only have one question, I have my xps700 with intel pentium D 3.0 ghz, with which processor will be replaced?

Okay, so lets say that I feel comfortable enough to install the motherboard on my own, and then realize that it's a little harder than it looks.  Can I still have a technician sent out to install it for me?  Or once I select that I will install it myself, is it pretty much up to me to do it and not Dell's problem anymore?

wow wow wow!!!

i can't wait!!!

Any idea how long will take to ship the item?

The XPS 700 after order took more than 4 months to be delivered. Hopefully the mainboard exchange will take only 3-5 days?

 Thanks, AM.

Thanks for the timely information Lionel! Your post is very clear.

Does this new motherboard essentially make our system a XPS 720? If so, will our service tag change to reflect the difference?

I don't want this MB failing in a year and the support tech sending out a XPS 700 motherboard instead.

Great News!  Thanks for all your efforts.  This is kind of ironic, but if we are getting a new processor and need a board for the old one; is buying the old board an option?

Thanks for the update, but is re-installing the OS really needed, I think if you properly uninstall all Drivers in the system before shutting down and removing the 700 Board, then do the swap and boot into windows it should prompt you for all your drivers again and to reactivate the system

I do this with White boxes all day long here at work, yes its not as clean as a fresh install, but if it works on a white box, it should work in therory on a Dell..

Also note if you plan to img the PC make sure you run Microsoft's Sysprep to blow away the plug and play drivers, then you will have an easier time , loading the img back to the new board

Just some random thoughts

Thanks, can't wait for the mobos to start shipping out.  Hopefully it will be within weeks of Aug 13th signup date.

and there was much rejoicing.......

cant wait i want this badly

I would like info on Vista install from XP duiring the MOBO upgrade. Dell sent the Vista upgrade to me because Vista wasnt out when I ordered my system late December 06'. I have not been ble to perform this upgrade apparently due to compatibility issues.

I would love to know the price for xps 710 owners as well..

Thanks for the hard work that went into this post Lionel. It is very encouraging to see the ongoing steps that Dell is taking to create a healthy and dynamic relationship with its customers.

Are there any issues with doing a Clean Install Of Vista Ultimate and this new motherboard? Any additional steps needed for this install?

Luke: Nope... shouldn't be any additional steps to do a clean of install Vista Ultimate.

Any news on the price, will it be discounted price for xps710 customers or will it be full price, compared to the ones on the market?

Thanks Lionel. To some of us this seems obvious, but to the others, make sure you do these things. I'll be anxious to hear how soon these kits will be shipping!
