XPS 720 H2C with QX6800 Quad Core Revisited

Wanted to provide an update since last week's post on this topic. Since then, our engineering teams have made progress on this and we now expect to be able to fulfill orders with the QX6800 running at Bin +3 (or 3.73GHz) within the next four weeks.

If you are a customer with a pending XPS 720 H2C order with a ship date that has passed, you will be hearing from a Dell representative soon. At that time, you can do one of the following:

1) Leave your current order intact. This means you'll have to wait longer (we expect to ship orders within the next four weeks), but it also means you will receive a system that will support 3.73GHz.

2) Work with a Dell representative who will re-enter your system order with the QX6700 Extreme Edition processor running at Bin+3 (3.46GHz). These orders should ship within two weeks and we will upgrade your shipping to Next Day.

3)  Work with a Dell representative who will re-order with the Bin+2 (3.46GHz) version of the QX6800 processor. These orders should be available to ship within two weeks also and will also get upgraded shipping to Next Day.

Essentially, choosing option #2 or #3 will get you a system that runs at 3.46GHz. But if clock speed is important, you can wait just a bit longer to get a system equipped with a QX6800 processor that runs at 3.73GHz.

Thanks again for your patience.

Hello Everybody,

I ordered a XPS 720 system back in October and after three delays, it finally arrived a month later.  This XPS arrived half-dead with numerous problems related to  BIOS loading and blue-screen crashes if I run Crysis and other games using the dual SLI Nvidia 8800 GT graphic cards.   A Dell service representative promised to have a "fully working" replacement within 10 dqys.  I again have experienced four delays and I don't have a clue if I will ever get a working XPS 720.  There is something seriously wrong with the hardware and manufacturing process.  I am very angry with Dell.  Dell did tell me to hold onto the defective 720 until a replacement is delivered and still, it's been 8 weeks since the original order and I have nothing to use.

So, my message to Dell is:  you will lose valuable customers.  This XPS represents my 10th Dell purchase and after this experience,  I may not want to business with you anymore.  If any Mr. Dell,  your customer relations need improving........   Merrick

I have a XPS 720 with a Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.40Ghz,1066FSB) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MB cache on order it has been oushed back to a month to wait even after calling twice and I'm told it will be there the next day.

It's loaded with VISTA Ultimate and now I'm reading about all the troubles people are having with the XPS 720 when they get it.  I hear it freezes with VISTA and the test scores are low and that the BIOS is very poor.

DELL sold the 700's and 710's and they all had trouble and had to be replaced with new motherboards and such.

Can you tell me why the 720 is better and that EVERYTHING that people are complaining about with the 720 is false?  Whay does it freeze foor so many pople and why do they say the fan is so load that it's not good for an office environment?

Thank you

I have a 720 h2c on order, which has been put back by 29 days (check the terms and conditions!) to Aug 20. By that time the 6800 chip will be somewhat less than state of the art, and will probably be selling for half what it was when I ordered my PC. The 6850 is already out, and the 6800 price was dropped by Intel on that release. In the meanwhile Dell sits with my £3k in the bank while their costs drop. Nice business model.

I spoke to customer care, who will contsact me when the PC is ready to ship, but they couldn't tell me why there was a delay. To be fair they did offer to cancel the order as no cost. I still want my PC though! For the delays I would expect to get the latest processor when it does eventually ship.

I ordered a Dell XPS 720 H2C with the QX6700 on July 10th shipment has been delayed twice and no good explanation was provided but the customer service person I spoke with. I have ordered many Dell systems and recommended Dell systems to many friends and family members. I have to say that this experience has soured my opinon of Dell. The lack of good explanation for the delay is frustrating. If there is a valid reason for the two delays tell me. The fact that I am not given a valid reason makes me question the reason. Although I have agreed to the two previous delays. I will not agree to a third delay. I will cancel my order and go with some other company (and it won't be the Dell owend Alienware).

An update August 2:  After 3 weeks Dell shipped me the QX6800 at 3.2GHz with air cooling.  No comment, no explanation.  After calling support I was told there were no more 6800 at 3.73 with H2C.  They ended up building a 6700 at 3.4GHz with H2C for me.  I presume we'll get some kind of refund...

I currently run Coolit's TEC system which is great temperature-wise, but still a little noisy.  I hope the H2C is as quiet as I've been told.

I ordered a Dell XPS 720 H2C with QX6700 and a 3007 WFP monitor on June 2 and after almost two months it is still not delivered. Í was waiting patiently (even while my order was delayed for 7 times...). I used to build my machines myself, but I wanted to quit with that and buy Dell machines and replace them every three years. If this takes too long i will cancel my order and never buy a Dell anymore. ;-(

Will Dell be offering the new Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 on the Dell XPS H2C? This model has some slight speed increased but more importantly it is much cheaper. This could really help consumers out when purchasing such a high end system. I am eager to place a order for my H2C!

Just curious, what was the resolution that Dell came up with in ensuring that the QX6800 Bin+3 runs in a stable state? I'm not sure if I'd want to get the system only to find out that it's not stable after all.

hi emma ,i bought last may a xps 710 e6700  2.66 mgz  4g ram nvidia 8800gtx oc fast delivery but the service tech came to my place twice :first time to change video card ,second time to change the mother board and the video card again....lucky me i was inside of the 30 days warranty and i got an authorisation to return for full credit .the money is at the my bank now ......no more new generation pc for me before next summer .........ouffff

Hi Emma,

Despite this site being a "one2one" communication with Dell, you will be lucky to get a response here to a comment actually relevant to the blog subject.

I feel your pain. Although Dell promises to listen to customer feedback, there is no avenue for complaint that Dell actually responds to :-(

 Good luck,

IL

I am forced to take option 1.  Dell charged, and I paid, a $300 premium for the QX6800 over the QX6700.  Options 2 and 3 drop you back to the original (pre premium) chip.  Why isn't there a $300 premium refund?  Next day shipping doesn't cost $300.

I don't know what your stuff is like technically, but your customer service leaves much to be desired. My husband and I are still waiting for a refund on a  malfunctioning Dell laptop six weeks after we first reported the problem to you. My husband has spent around 10 hours on the phone to your call centre in Manila - being messed around by them, quoting reference numbers to an interminable chain of people, being put on hold, listening to muzak. It's not acceptable to treat people like this and we'll be writing to the main consumer PC magazines to let them know that Dell evidently considers it acceptable to take hundreds of pounds from people, give them shoddy, sub-standard goods, and then muck them about and not give them their money back. The entire experience has been so stressful and unpleasant for both of us that we will never consider buying Dell goods again. And my husband is in charge of IT procurement for a large organisation.

Sorry for the problems you've encountered, Emma. I'll ask someone from our Customer Service Department to contact you directly.

Sounds like good news all around.
I like the fact that the option for 3.7GHz is still there, it is very good news.

I'm going to choose #1. I'm pretty sure that Dell will probably offer the QX6850 knowing my luck when my QX6800 Bin+3 finally gets shipped.

Kudos to the Dell XPS team for finally coming out with a solution!
