Just to update the link to the drivers (the one in http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Tech/Modems does not work any more) :

 I take it these (designated "oem") drivers are for Dell only. That would make sence, they cost money.

 For real brownie points - consider a modem which uses free-software drivers. hsfmodem is closed-source.

But to totally ace it: use coreboot for bios. This will get Dell an endorsement by FSF and RMS would even start using these products!
 

Hi do you know if there is one driver for conexant for slackware distribution? I use slackware and i didn't find any drivers for now.. Thanks

Am running Ubuntu 7.10, official stable release. Have Inspiron 1520 notebook, are the modems the same as in the 1420? Have no other option of connecting to Internet! Also, is this the 14.4k free version or a fully fledged 56k one you Dell guys wrote yourself?

Great job in being more actively involved with Linux... though Mace Moneta above makes sense. No winmodems please!

Sorry, I installed Dell driver and works, but it seems there is the same velocity of Linuxant driver (< 14k) ????

Got a Dimension B110 with XP about a year ago, dual boot with Ubuntu and live in Guyana, South America. Dialup is still the main way to connect here.

This driver is a God sent for me. Now I can get a dedicated Linux machine.

Many who try Linux locally switch back to Windows because of poor Winmodem support.

Because of this driver my next PC will be a Dell.

Hi Dell,

 While i do congratulate you on the release, can you tell which chipsets work with this driver? I have a friend who has a compaq machine & hence uses one of the hsf & hcf driver. As obviously that is a 14.4 free one :(

  While now I will be  suggesting them the Dell Inspirion E1505n as well  1420n for work use. Thanx a lot for making it easier & hopefully at some point it does make it to ubuntu restricted drivers repository. 

Okay, I have been sitting on the fence waiting to see who would be willing to offer a laptop with a linux distro, but more importantly to see if the company is willing to stand behind the product. Dell, it is looking like you may have just convinced one undecided consumer to jump off the fence and place an order for your model 1420N.

I have been using Red Hat at home since release 7.0...sounds like it may be time for me to leap from the desktop to the laptop.

People complaining about the current status/availability are obvioulsy quite new to the whole Linux driver topics, issues and problems.

The free availability of this particular driver is something a whole lot of ppl have been awaiting for years and years, in no matter what package it comes as long as it is there.

 Nice job, Dell. Finally.
 

Thanks for the modem driver. Some people expect miracles overnight,  they do not speak for the majority of us. We apreciate the effort.

@Phil: You _do_ know Ubuntu is the version of Linux that Dell is bundling with their machines, don't you? Thus it is perfectly rational for them to offer Ubuntu (Debian) drivers. If you need to convert it to RPM or whatever I'm sure a bit of Googling will help you.

@Mace Moneta: Modems are yesterdays tech, it is cheaper to do it in software than in hardware these days. We (in the open source community) have bigger fish to fry than dumb Winmodems.

Conexant have traditionally charged for this stuff. I say congrats to Dell for releasing it into the wild gratis. But you'll never satisfy everybody, huh? Keep up the good work Dell, the amount of goodwill you are generating can only help you in the long run.

Errrm - I hate to be a partisan, but not all of us use Ubuntu (or Debian).

Can we have a source tarball, please? 100% of users could make use of that.

I can't find a direct e-mail to John Hull or any other person in charge of the web page you direct us to; so, I'll post here.

You may want to change the "Installation Instructions" to be a little more clear.  Here are some suggestions:

"Type your password in the password field and press ." => "Type your password in the password field and press THE OK BUTTON."

"Click anywhere inside the terminal window and press ." => "Click anywhere inside the terminal window and press ENTER."

"Press to accept the default when . . ." => "Press ENTER to accept the default when . . . "

P.S. Under "Important Information" you say their might be a need to reboot.  Would there ever really be a need to reboot?  If so, then maybe put this in the "Installation Instructions" as well.

P.P.S  Dell, thank you for following through with your promise and providing Linux on your computers.  We applaud you for listening to your own customers and helping them reach what they want to achieve.  May this step prove VERY beneficial for Dell.
