XPS 720 H2C With QX6800 Quad Core Extreme Edition Processor

You may have noticed that this morning that we removed the offering for the QX6800 Extreme Edition processor at Bin+3 from the XPS 720 H2C.

We apologize for having to do this, truth is that we do not have a line of sight to enough supply of QX6800 processors that can tolerate the Bin+3 overclocking. Since it already runs at a 2.93GHz speed, there's a limited headroom to overclock. It just comes down to physics—a design can only tolerate so much voltage. Note that we are still offering the QX6800 Extreme Edition on the air-cooled XPS 720 Red system running at a lower clock speed of Bin+1 or (3.2GHz).

Now for more background: even with the H2C cooling system, we found that only a small fraction of our QX6800 processors could go to Bin+3 and remain stable through our rigorous testing process. When we started taking orders for the 720 H2C we had a fixed supply of the QX6800 chips that seemed ample at the time, but once when we found out how rare the Bin+3 variety was, we started combing our supply chain for even more. Last week, our backlog forecast started to pass our best estimates for finding Bin+3 chips. It just did not make sense to take any additional orders when we couldn't tell when we would be able to fulfill them.

At this point, our engineering team is doing everything they can to get more Bin+3s out of our original supply but this is expected to be a slow process. Fortunately, a lot of the processors that don't make the Bin+3 screening support Bin+2 just fine (3.46GHz) so we are going to make this an offering very soon. In other words, soon we will re-introduce the quad-core QX6800 processor on the XPS 720 H2C at Bin +2, or 3.46GHz.

Our next step is to get our customers an H2C system that they've been waiting so patiently for. Since our QX6800 Bin+3 supply is exhausted, and it’s not feasible for us to fulfill all orders, we’re assembling a callback team who will contact customers with affected orders to give you two options:

1) Cancel your current QX6800 Bin+3 order and re-order your system with the second most powerful processor, the QX6700 Extreme Edition quad-core, which also supports overclocking to Bin+3 (3.46GHz). These orders should ship within two weeks and we will upgrade your shipping to Next Day.

2) Cancel your current QX6800 Bin+3 order and re-order with the Bin+2 version of the QX6800 processor. These orders should ship within two weeks also and will also get upgraded shipping to Next Day.

We know it’s not a perfect solution, and do apologize for the inconvenience. At this point, we’ll remain focused on getting systems shipped out to customers who this affects.

When is the qx 6850 going to be put into the xps 720 H2C.  I know its bieng researched by Dell, but is there any time frame? A month, two months, 6 months?  It would be nice to know.  I want to buy the H2C now but if the qx 6850, will be put into the computers soon, I will just wait.

I Ordered the Xps 720 H2C with the Overclocked Bin+3 Proccesor.

In this Article are you Telling , Dell Xps current Customers that the Product is ; Available but in a small amount so you might get downclocked , or that the Product is defective and will not work properly so you will take the Product of the Market?

It Seems Strange to me but i Actaully am Buying a Fully Loaded Dell Xps 720 H2C And In the Price , the Intel Core Duo Xtreme Overclocked to 3.73 Ghz is Still in my Detail's for the Order.

And By the way , in dell United State's the Product is Still Available m Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6800 (8MB L2 Cache,3.73GHz Factory overcl

=/

It is a shame that Dell dont tell there Sale Managers.

I bought one of these PC on the 28th of July and the couldnt get it confirmed that it was overclocked, the sales manager emailed me confirming that they all where over clocked, but he was only saying this as he was completely unaware of this issue. Which so was I at the time.

I ordered the machine which has now been delayed 3 times and I am now being told that it will be delivered on the 20th September no one has mentioned why and no one has mentioned anything about the over clocking issue.

I have only discovered this by searching online and found this article.

As a business customer who spends over £100K a year with Dell this order for the XPS machine has been unacceptable and I am very disappointed in there cusotmer service.

It's nice for Dell to admit this mistake, but it would have been better for Dell to have done some homework before offering the systems.

Any amateur "enthusiast" with a modest level of experience overclocking Kentsfield processors -- or for that matter, any knowledgable person who simply spent some time studying the subject on overclocker forums -- knows that 3.73Ghz is too high a speed for stable, warranted, 24/7 operation even under the H2C unit.  (Yes, there are a handful of "golden" chips that may be capable of this level of performance with reasonable voltage requirements (and heat output), and the silicon is getting better all the time, but those chips are still far too rare to form the basis of an OEM product line.)

This episode demonstrates a shocking lack of knowledge and experience within Dell with respect to overclocking.

COOL MASTER

QX 6850 COMING OUT SOON (JULY 22)!!....BASED ON TESTING, THIS CHIP CAN BE OVERCLOCKED TO 3.8 GHZ + ON FACTORY COOLING...IT HAS G0 STEPPING INSTEAD OF B STEPPING...TRANSLATION, IT HAS A HIGHER OVERCLOCKING POTENTIAL THAN THE QX6800 OR QX6700....XMAN IS CORRECT...LOOKS LIKE HE DID SOME HOMEWORK....I HOPE DELL READ THIS AND PUT IN THE QX 6850 FOR THE XP2 720!

maybe 3.73 bin +3 can be expected with the new QX6850 chip to be released July 22....hope Dell incorporate this chip (word is that it has higher overclock potential)

Good job, posting this concurrent with the business decision.

Does this change mean you don't plan to offer QX6800 at 3.76 GHz again at all, or do you expect it might happen again once you get a better mix of processors?

Did you cut the price on top of the line 720 H2C? (Or is it covered by the differences in processor prices?)

Is the H2C cooler unit still required and will the top of the line 720 be offered at a lower price without the H2C unit?

Lionel,

It appears that Dell is quickly learning from previous communications problems, and I commend your level of detail and forthright answers.

If I had received such an aswer last July when my XPS 700 was in queue I would have a much different relationship with Dell today.  Instead I was treated like I was buying a used car and the rep who called me attempted to brow beat me into not canceling my order.

The difference is striking and I commend you for the improvement.

I was wondering the same thing as MoneyGuyBK and Doug were. If I were to go with option #2, would I get refunded any money at all or perhaps offered some additional options for my system. I'm afraid that if I were to go with option #2 and "reorder" my system with BIN+2, I might lose the opportunity to get the XiFi Soundblaster card which apparently is no longer being offered.

Good call to make this announcement and end speculation.
Bin +3 is very aggressive and I wondered how in the world Dell was doing this in the first place.

I appreciate Dell being so forthcoming and certainly understand the issue.  Nothing is mentioned here about customers who already have 720 H2Cs with the QX6800 at Bin +3.  Is it safe to assume that the recommendation will be to reduce to 3.46 and keep what you have.  Will the company also warrant those machine where the owner decides to stay at 3.73?

Also... there's certainly a "value" issue between where Dell would price a 720 H2C at 3.73 vs. pricing the same machine with performance topped at 3.46.  Will there be any consideration for current customers that paid for a full-up 3.73 CPU that now must settle for stability at 3.46?

And lastly... now that 3.73 GHz will no longer be "supported" for the QX6800 doesn't this render the H2C cooler a bit unnecessary?  If I can get a plain 720 ("Red") with a QX6800 overclocked to 3.46 without a cooler it apparently is no longer necessary.  Is there some consideration here as well for current H2C owners?

Thanks for your time and openness with the community!

Hi, and Thanx for posting this.

I am one of those who has ordered the QX6800 at Bin+3, my order was placed on 6/15/07 and is expected to ship on 7/25/07

My question is, am I still going to get my H2C with Bin+3 or will mine be downclocked to Bin+2?

As of now, I have not received a call or email, so I am not sure.  Maybe I will get the communication today and I get my answer, but if I don't I will check here to see if I get an answer.

Thanx for all your hard work Dell.

Peace

Lionel,

Thanks - this is the kind of communication that is needed. There is a problem beyond your (Dell's) control that affects both existing customers and potential customers and this kind of communique allows us to make an informed decision.

 Regards - MichaelO
