Talk with Linux Experts from Dell & Canonical on June 27

Want to know more about Ubuntu on Dell? Next week, we'll be hosting a live thread session that features two key folks behind Dell's recent Ubuntu initiative. Tune into this thread on the Linux Community site on Wednesday, June 27 at either 8am - 10am CST or 8pm - 10pm CST to join the conversation.

Here's some background on both:

Ben Collins has been a Debian developer for 10 years, and served as Debian Project Leader. During this time he has worked on many Open Source projects, including OpenLDAP and Subversion (not the same as Ben Collins-Sussman). Ben brought Debian's sparc port to a stable release, and has worked on the UltraSPARC kernel port. In addition, he maintained the Linux1394 firewire stack for several years. Ben has been employed with Canonical for nearly 2 years as the Kernel Team Lead for Ubuntu.

John Hull is the manager of the Linux Engineering team in Austin. He has worked at Dell for 8 years, 7 of them on the Linux Engineering team. His past roles on the Linux team have included test engineer, lead engineer for the Precision Workstation Linux program, and lead engineer for the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on PowerEdge Servers program. His favorite desktop distributions are Ubuntu 7.04 and openSUSE 10.2.

John led the Engineering team responsible for bringing Ubuntu machines to customers in the United States.

Both will be on hand from 8am - 10am CST and again from 8pm - 10pm CST on Wednesday, June 27 to have discussions with you about Ubuntu on Dell.

@ captain bush

You may want to post your help request on our Dell Community Forums to see if you can get a quicker response.  The forums are a better location to get help than here on the blogs.

@ steve: I ordered a Laptop with Vista on June 5th and it's still "in production" with estimated ship date on July 3-5th. Starting to put pressure on their support now...

I guess Dell's speed at getting things out the door depends on how much you stay on their backs... although this might not always be the case.

The first thing after getting that lappy I'm instally Ubuntu/Gentoo on it... It comes with Vista cause the coupon I used isn't available for the ubuntu lappy.

I have a question for Dell, I ordered a Dell Laptop with Ubuntu the last week of May. I just checked the status and discovered that there is yet another production delay.  The new estimated time for shipment is now after July 4th.  If Dell doesn't delay shipment for the third time it will make delivery five/six weeks since I ordered the laptop May 25.

So my question - Is Linux on Laptop selling that well, that Dell is unable to keep up with demands or is Dell having problems gearing up for the new production run.

The reason I purchased from Dell was price and the peace of mind that the components would work (wireless/video card) and be supported without having to waste time doing workarounds.

Thanks.

Hi John,

Thanks for bring Linux to the desktop!  Are you able to explain why Dell will only sell Ubuntu for "Home Use"?  Seems Dell has stopped just before the goal line...

Will this be recorded somewhere?  I won't be able to get to either.
