Interest in Linux Outside the United States

If you spend any amount of time on Direct2Dell and IdeaStorm, it's pretty obvious that Linux is a popular topic.

On IdeaStorm, Linux and open source-related ideas are commonly some of the most popular ones. Currently the Sell Linux PCs Worldwide idea by ergo and Dell Ubuntu for Europe by yesmathew are near the top of the front page of IdeaStorm. In other words, they are recently popular ideas.

On the blog, Linux posts related to our recent commitment to offer Ubuntu are the top 4 most viewed posts since we launched in July last year. In just about every one of those posts, the common trend was this: a big jump in traffic the first day of the post followed by an even bigger spike on the second day. International interest was a big reason behind that trend. One more data point to put it in perspective: my post from last month that explained details of the three systems we'd offer with Ubuntu attracted almost 65,000 unique visitors that day—a single day record in terms of traffic. More importantly though, one of the most common requests I see from the Linux community via blog comments and direct e-mails is for us to to offer Ubuntu to home users outside the United States. At this point, I don't have any new developments to communicate, but it is something that's under consideration.

Veni Markovski is someone who knows firsthand the about the level of worldwide interest in Linux and open source software. Since 1990, he's been actively involved furthering worldwide development standards that drive the Internet. While Wikipedia refers to him as a "Bulgarian Internet pioneer," the reality is his influence extends way beyond his work there. Through the years, his work on Internet standards and initiatives is one thing that made him passionate about Linux and open source software in general.

Those are all reasons why I jumped at the chance to interview Veni while he was here in Round Rock to visit with Michael. Before I get to the video, check out Veni's blog post where he reflected on his time here.

In the vlog, Veni talks about some of his work, shares his perspective on why Dell should expand our recent Ubuntu-based Linux offerings outside the United States, technology trends in eastern Europe and more.

I have been working in academic almost-linux-only environments for the past ten years in Europe. I have personally thrown out (literally in the wastebasket) hundreds of windows license due to Dell's fanatic and unreasonable windows fetich. Now that Dell has decided to play openminded and acknowledge if not the power of at least the need for linux (on the desktop) it makes me even more frustrated to realize that Europe and small and big business is excluded.

I am from Germany and I would like to buy dell with Ubuntu, but we have the option only with FreeDOS and I can purchase it only per phone or email (!!!).
We don't have online-option for free choice of OS :(
The question about notebook with linux to all company's:
Where can I buy a notebook with Linux?!

I'm outside the United States, and in a market that really isn't in Dell's top ten; specifically, Australia.  So I don't imagine that there's any real rush to tap into my market any time soon, at least not until the waters have been well and truly tested in the North American market.

Having said that, I will do something I've never done before, and buy a Dell laptop for my own home use, the moment that Dell start offering Linux as a preinstall option Down Under.  As far as I can tell from my colleagues, such an option would be a discriminating factor in several laptop purchases, if/when it becomes available.

I'm assuming that this Blog is for Dell News.

The world wants Linux based Dell PCs -
That's not news, we told you that.

Other people (like Veni) think the world should have Dell Linux PCs because it would benefit Dell (more profit - assuming MS don't spit the dummy over it) and the consumer (more choice) -
That's not really news either.

I'd be interested in how sales are going too (I hope the posters here aren't just a very vocal minority) but that's for Dell to tell people as they wish (or not).

I'm just a user who's never owned a Linux PC (actually I'm a .net developer) and wants to do so for the first time, safe in the knowledge that everything will work and if it doesn't I have support from a large reputable company.

So, "Dell Linux PCs available in Europe"? -
That would be news...

ps @Pollock - You're not wrong, but it does no harm for consumers to make a company aware of their interest (they asked after all).

I'm surprised that DELL hasn't tapped this market years ago?

Well, that was funny.

For a few minutes (might have even been half an hour), the http://www.dell.com/ home page showed a caption that read:

"By Popular Demand.

 Ubuntu Has Arrived."

Now it's gone (we're left with the green PC (also a good idea), some movie bloke and a main page about college computers).

It's a pity.

Are you guys really that stupid?  No company EVER releases a product globally.  Whether it's games consoles, MMORPG's, cars, software, whatever, it is always released first in one market (normally the company's home market), and then released to other regions either just over time, or else based upon the feedback gained from the initial release.

All I see is a lot of crying and "Hey Dell, are you stupid? Don't you realise we want this abroad" over what are standard business practices.  I don't remember the same reaction when PS3 was initially released in Japan, then US, then Europe, or the same for Xbox, or the Wii, or Windows Vista, etc, etc....

I really need a bit more performance than my Dimenson 8300 can offer, but I am still waiting in the hopes of being able to buy a Ubuntu box from Dell in EMEA. Hoping this will be soon rather than later.

wow this is a good idea very good i like it

I would really enjoy Ubuntu in Canada.  Currently my only choice is System76, so I am deciding whether to wait for Dell Ubuntu in Canada, or go with S76.

I too need a new computer, but fortunately not that urgently.  I'll wait until one of the majors comes along with a laptop with a preinstalled Linux OS for the Canadian market.

In other words, Dell is in a bit of a race here.  First past the post gets my money.

I do need to buy a new laptop. But I don't wanna pay for windows, so I'm waiting the dell/ubuntu offer to be available in Belgium to buy this computer.

Please, make it available as soon as possible!

Thanks!

nice to see you finally found out we european folks want Linux on our PCs, too. took you quite some time, eh?

'Twas topic number one directly after Dells official statement that there will be Dell PCs shipped with pre-installed Linux ;-)

cu, w0lf.

Did Dell just forget that there might be interest outside of the US? Or did they just forget that there is anything outside the US ;)

The video was going fine until last few minutes where Veni started speaking against using Microsoft and choose Open Source. Initially his view was Dell is providing choices not only in the hardware and now even in the Operating System - which is a good point. But later when he stresses that Microsoft Windows is getting bigger with each release and Linux is just a CD, is not accountable. A single Ubuntu CD version is useful ONLY if you have Internet so that you can install additional Software Packages. And there is a Ubuntu DVD Version which has most of the Softwares for which you neednt go to Internet. Its not I install Ubuntu single CD version and I get everything I want, may be the basic softwares I could get.

It would be good if Dell does not fall into the Microsoft Vs Open  Source fight and just go on with the Community in regard to Linux. Dell is here to make people happy, whether Windows User or Linux User :). As a Dell User, I am happy with their product and yes I bought a Vista system. I do have Linux in a different laptop. And I am happy with both Vista and Linux :D

Hi,

Is there any news out on how far how many Dell Ubuntu systems were sold ? There are many communities/people out there criticizing Dell for its wonderful move in bringing Linux to the masses. If Dell could publish something like how much Ubuntu systems were sold so far, it would be a direct nail hit for those kinda people.

Keep up the good work !

Maybe a bit unrelated, but: are there plans to, after a few months, announce how good  the Linux sales are going?

It's all well and good, and I agree with Veni's point, but the big question everyone's asking outside the US: when will the three models on offer will be shipped worldwide?

Where I live, 100 miles north of the Vermont border, It can't be the power supply (we light your East Coast cities), it can't be the keyboards; you'd sell me a Windoze-based system with a French canadian keyboard in a minute. It's can't be the commercial support: from what I hear, Canonical Ltd has an operation in Montreal (where French is the main language). Can it be that your Canadian subsidiary is resisting change and choice?

Sorry, I just don't get the point.

Looks like Veni found himself a new job :P
