Dell Offers Three Consumer Systems With Ubuntu 7.04

It’s finally here. Later today, Dell will offer U.S customers three different systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed: the XPS 410n and Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. These systems are now available at www.dell.com/open today. Starting price for the E520n desktop and the E1505n notebook is $599; the XPS 410n starts at $899 $849. Note from Lionel:  My apologies, but I had included an incorrect starting price for the XPS 410n. It will be $849.

Hardware support will come from Dell. Beyond that, users can turn to the Linux section of the Dell Community Forum for help and also get the latest updates from our Linux team at www.dell.com/linux http://linux.dell.com. Users also have fee-based options for operating system support through Canonical, including 30-day Get Started, One-year Basic and One-year Standard.

As John said in his post earlier this week, initially we will offer a subset of the component options we support on the three systems. We will continue to work with vendors to improve the stability of the associated Linux drivers moving forward. That’s part of our longer-term goal to increase the number of drivers that work at the kernel level—something Direct2Dell readers made very clear. We’ll get there, it just takes time.

Update 5-25: Beyond this first step of offering three platforms with Ubuntu pre-installed, another goal we have is to introduce Linux to a wider audience. If you're new to Linux or would like to understand more about open source, check out this StudioDell video: Linux 101: What's all the Fuss?

Dell is doing this because of your clear feedback in IdeaStorm. User dhart submitted this idea on February 16—the first day we launched IdeaStorm and it quickly became the #1 idea. Since then, about 30,000 community members weighed in to support it, and over 100,000 of you completed the Linux survey to tell us more.

In this vlog, I had the pleasure to interview John Hull and key members of his team that helped us get to this point today. In addition to John, you'll hear from Roger Noriega and Rezwanul Kabir, who were the desktop and notebook leads, respectively. You'll also hear perspective from Hatim Amro about work he did to get systems with Ubuntu through Dell's manufacturing process.

To the worldwide Linux community, I wanted to thank you for all your support. Linux-related posts are the three most viewed posts since we launched the blog back in July 2006. The Linux survey post and the Ubuntu 7.04 post are also the top two most commented blog entries as well—both received well over 500 comments. That makes it hard to keep up with comment moderation, but it's a problem I love to have.

Thanks for giving us a chance to show what Dell 2.0 is about. While this is a milestone that a lot of us will remember, it’s just the beginning—plenty more to come.

Nice with Ubuntu, thank you very much Dell!

Have you read about the soon coming netbook from Dell? As rumord on www.dell-mini.com it will be on sale with Ubuntu Linux.. 8.9", Intel Atom and Ubuntu = nice!

Hi All,

if any one is reading this blog before you make your order, please do not make your order. i had ordered and made the payment for my studio 15 laptop on July 30th am yet to receive it, the sales guys who took the order promised the laptop would be delivered to me within 7-10 days, i have not received the laptop. when i try to call them they hang up the call saying we will get back, thay never get back, after that when i tried calling them they dont even answer the call. Had already posted a blog on this, no proper replies from anyone. so please dont get into this kind of problem by ordering a laptop. no replies for all the mails i have sent the sales people. never knew Dell would treat customers like this. Dont even have a proper place to complain.

so.. how about some sales figures!

will thr  be any price reductions for INSPIRON 1520 in a weak or two

Thanks DELL!!!

Just received my Dell Inspiron 530N with Ubuntu 7.04.  Yes, GG (7.10) is available but it still shipped with 7.04.  As a long-time redhat/fedora user, I must say that Ubuntu is very impressive.  I've installed a couple dozen packages that didn't come pre-installed and  apt-get / synaptic makes that delightful.  YUM/YUMEX are poor substitutes.  Very nice machine - quiet, good-looking and blows the doors off my 5-year-old Dimension 4400 which is running FC6.

Nice job, Dell !!!

I've just got my Inspiron, it's a 1520 pre loaded with Vista. Vista stayed just as long as it tool for me to burn and install Ubuntu Gutsy. I hated Vista within the twenty minutes it took to burn the live cd. I have no compiz (but in all honesty I don't care!) and if I shut the lid wifi doesn't work when I reopen it (cured by a reboot) but neither of these things irritate me anywhere near as much as the constant nagging of Vista. Well done Dell for having the courage to take Linux on board, I hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.

Ubuntu can be installed on a Canadian Dell 1501.

http://ubuntu1501.blogspot.com/

I have followed the instructions on this website to get Ubuntu installed.  Wi-fi has to be configured manually and this website shows how.  I have a fully functional Dell 1501 with Ubuntu setup with some of my own customizations.  Anyone who needs a hand can leave a message here.

Some problems currently noted.

Hibernate and sleep do not work.

Cannot get Compiz to work properly. Many users have gotten it to work and many others have not.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! DELL IS THE BEST ;-)

Uhhhhhhh thank Krist for more ways and means to escape the Evil Empire and it's all pervasive (buggy) Operating systems and software....... and it's wicked corporate impositions.....

Getting Ubuntu Linux and Open office has been the best step into sanity I have taken for a LONG time.....

Yay Linux - Yay Open Office, Yay Open Source..

WAY TO GO DELL!!! I've been working with various versions of LINUX for a few years now. The Cutting Edge, Storm, KhaOS, Stampede, Enlightenment, RedHat, and even The Second Edition of Corel LINUX. I was glad that Corel took an interest in LINUX in the 90's,and I thought Linux was going to finally make its mark in the "O/S world" and put a bit of a "Squeeze" on Microsofts exclusivity. But it didn't last very long. Very glad to see a High quality PC manufacturer like Dell pick up the LINUX ball and run with it. I currently have a DELL Dimension 8400 and have had no problems in running any of the LINUX versions I have. Good Luck with your LINUX future......... Jeff ...............

Vojamo linux anche in Italia..

Per favore Delliani... datevi una mossa!!

( We want linux on Dell's systems in Italy, Now!. Please Dell, come on! )

Dell continues to fail the Globalization test... still no Ubuntu available on Canadian PCs.

...which is why I've decided to build my own from Linux compatible components. Not hard, but a bit more pricey. Advantages? ...more control over performance and future upgrades.

We need Ubuntu powered laptops also here in Europe!

Or, do anybody here know if I buy the ubuntu laptop in US and bring it to Europe the warranty  is still valid?

Thanks! We're waiting ...

Please make this available in Argentina, thanks!

Any chance that Dell will ship Dell desktop and notebook with preinstalled Ubuntu in Asia? Especially in South East Asia (I'm from Brunei). I would love to own Dell desktop with Ubuntu OS in it.

Hello,
I am interested in ordering a Inspiron 640m Dual with Ubunto as the OS.   Is this doable? I have a printout of all of the parameters for the
machine I'm intending to get.   When the machine is complete, I will have  Ubunto>VMware>windows xp, in that order. I do not want vista!
Thank you
Arthur Raynolds

Well, the Ubuntu Inspiron would be the perfect computer if I were shopping six months ago.  But now that Intel has moved on to a 800Mhz FSB and the x3100 graphics card, and Dell has moved on to the Inspiron 1520, the 1505 is already looking like last years computer.

So I'll guess I'll wait until the either the 1520 or (even better) the latitude 830 arrive in the Ubuntu lineup.

It's reasonable to restrict the choice during the initial phases of Ubuntu support, but at least one of the choices should include current hardware.

Any word on when I can expect an Ubuntu laptop with Santa Rosa?

I plan to buy a Dell Ubuntu notebook for my next development workstation.  Thanks for this offering, Dell!  Through good hardware and now Linux software, you've won my business.

The Show Mus Go On!!!

Keep on Moving and spread the Idea. Make it Happen everywhere all over the World!

Just bought my Dellbuntu today.  Had some problems ordering via Web and via phone when I tried ordering about 4 days ago, but now it seems to have gone through.  Am looking forward to getting my Inspiron notebook with Ubuntu.

I put more detail on my Slashdot journal at: http://slashdot.org/~KWTm/journal/

In response to the people who ask why the Linux machines aren't cheaper, there has been a lot of discussion on various Web forums that you can find yourself, but I'll summarize my own feelings on this by saying: I'd rather pay to make sure Linux works on my Dell computer, and will continue to work.  You can read more detail about what I say here:
 http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=235981&cid=19252857

Also check out that entire Slashdot discussion.  I won't rehash the debate here.

Hi Dell,

I would by a Linux Laptop now if it were available in Germany.

Are you sure you really don't want my money ? I will never again buy a MS Windows computer; if this is all what Dell have to offer, I will turn elsewhere.

And, please, include an extended warranty.

Thank you for your attention,

Sylvain

Lynn Shepherd

I purchased one of the Dell desktop machines with Ubuntu and love it! It is fast, so far has been stable, and runs the 3D desktop software Compiz/Beryl very well.

I did have a few minor problems getting the 3D Desktop Effects running.

 1) NVIDIA drivers didn't work out of the box, The system wouldn't let me enable the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver. Once I did a system update, I could enable them.

2) I installed beryl-ubuntu with the other packages it recommended and beryl-manager from the Synaptic Package Manager. When I tried to enable beryl or the Compiz Desktop Effects, the top title bar of the windows would disappear and the console window turned completely white and was unusable.

Solution:

From: http://blogbeebe.blogspot.com/2007/03/ubuntu-704-alpha-5-problems-with-compiz.html

I just added two lines to the bottom of the Device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

To edit the xorg.conf file, pull up a console window and type:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

That section should now look something like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier    "nVidia Corporation GeForce 7300 LE"
    Driver        "nvidia"
    BusID        "PCI:1:0:0"
    VideoRam    256
    Option        "UseFBDev"        "true"
    Option         "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    Option         "AddARGBGLXVisuals"     "true"
EndSection

Restart your X server (Ctrl/Alt/Backspace) and problem with Compiz/Beryl is fixed.

Lynn

Not intended to be cute or smart, but assuming all Dell does is English laptops(so as to avoid the language issue), whats the difference between shipping one to Arkansas and shipping one to South America besides the cost?  If other countries would accept the unit as is(no changes besides required power supply differences), would Dell then be able to sell these boxes overseas?  Or is there other issues(support) that I'm missing here.

According to the thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=462849 Dell Netherlands are saying that they're going to ship from July 2007.

Thanks for the response (that's prompt service!).

I completely take your point regarding sharing unconfirmed updates, but I imagine many of your customers (like myself) were assuming it was just a matter of time before these products propogated out to a wider audience (as with the XP re-introduction).  It is useful (if annoying) to know that:

a) Dell Linux home PCs may not even make it out of the US, but at least

b) you guys are working on it.

Apologies if my earlier post appears a little petulant.  I hope you can appreciate the frustration of seeing the products we have asked for available to a limited audience that doesn't include us.

Thanks again,

Dave

If no-one else beats me to it this will be the 197th comment against this post.

Over one third of the comments to date relate to the (non) availability of these products outside the US (24% are from Europe).

And yet, no-one from Dell cares to respond to the rest of the world.  All we get is a video glibly telling us "You asked for it, you got it!". No Dell, we didn't get it. And you haven't even bothered to get back to us about it yet.

Dave: My apologies for not making it clear before. As you mention, there's interest from EMEA, and there is also interet from Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Japan. In other words, it's very clear there's a worldwide interest for Linux from feedback here and on IdeaStorm.

The reality is that there's no new information to share on whether or not we'll offer this beyond the United States. Many of us (myself included) do hope that it does happen, but sharing details before they are confirmed doesn't help anyone.

Review of Dell XPS 410n with Ubuntu Feisty preinstalled

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=461568

That's fantastic. Thank you for making it happen. You're the first who did it AND you even put it on your frontpage. I'm pretty sure that this is a step in the right direction. Expanding it to Europe would be even better.

I think you should step up your game and become a sponsor for the Software Freedom Day.

That would be an excellent mix to what you have accomplished so far.

Thank you again.

My next purchase may probably be a Dell (although the laptop you are offering is a bit "bulky" maybe I'll wait for a smaller (12 inche) form factor. But you also need to offer it outside of the US

Terrific that you're selling laptops with Linux on, and I really hope you start selling them in the UK before August, which is when I need a new laptop by!  I'm holding out atm, in hope that you will.

Excellent, hope it will appear in Russia too!

Great Dell. I need a new Laptop and I'm ready to buy one of yours with ubuntu pre-installed, but could you offer this in the EU (Germany) too? That would be awesome!

Why has Dell positioned the Vista machines cheapest?

I see Vista boxes for as low as $359

cheapest Ubuntu box being $599

cheapest FreeDOS box being $649

Why is there no budget Linux/DOS machines available?

WE WANT CHEAP LINUX MACHINES!!!!!!

Daniel Farina

I haven't bought an OEM system since a 486DX from Austin Computers, and have been patronizing clone shops/building my own ever since (back when ZIF sockets were a new thing)...but this move by Dell has caused me to buy my first OEM computer in over a decade to replace my aging self-built workstation.

I am hoping that with your rigorous testing and economies of scale that I can have an even more stable experience than with aftermarket hardware, a high hope indeed. Let us hope that my new Dimension E520N delivers!

Germán

Please... make this wonderfull oportunity available outside US. I'm from Argentina and really want to buy a Laptop but, I just want to buy a laptop... no Windows Vista Flavor OEM on it. I want to run Linux on it... so for that I have to buy the hardware, the OEM license, uninstall Windows whatever and then install Linux....

I understand that business are business and maybe there are some legal issues that make this offer a little bit complicated outside the US... but dreaming is free....

Is it possible to buy this Ubuntu Laptop from Dell USA and receive this in Argentina (of course with an extra charge for shipping and handling)?

please, in Italy!!!

Great news, thanks!

Newsflash.  Linux is free - who cares.

It's still a Dell computer, it will break on you.

Lipstick on a pig.

Are these Ubuntu systems available through the Dell Employee Purchase Program? If so, what's the URL?

I like what you did.

I hope you do not give up ... even if microsoft threatens you ... even if it doesn't seem to go so good in the short run ... and continue expanding the work ... in the long run you will see when people hear linux they will remember dell too.

Is dell going to open up a uk web site???

Some like www.dell.com/uk/open and  http://uk.linux.dell.com.

I ordered an E520n on Thursday.  Can't wait to get it!  Thanks Dell.

When the heack will dell ship the ubuntu laptops to canada....geeze this is not rocket science....or maybe dell doesnt value its canadian customers anymore :(

Let us help you sell these historic computers.

You should  create some banner ads of a variety of sizes to promote these machines.  I would be happy to add them to the sites that I control content on for free.  I am sure there are many in this forum that would do the same.

I appreciate what you have done for Linux, and I would like to help you succeed beyond your dreams with this venture.

With Windows installed an E1505 notebook is usually anywhere from $649 to $799 depending on specials, the XPS 410 is generally $999, and the Dimension E520 $679, so it looks like unbuntu is about $50 dollars less or so

Checked the price of ubuntu computer. It looks like that the ubuntu PC is much expensive than Windows PC.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 32-bit laptop? That's sad. I thought you guys were serious. I need a 64-bit laptop. Core Duo 2, something from AMD, I don't really care which. It's 2007. AMD doesn't even _make_ 32-bit processors anymore outside the embedded space. Who still buys 32-bit hardware? It's obsolete. It would also be nice to get something more portable, along the line of a D400, rather than the briefcase-sized object you just linked to. But that's not a showstopper the way a 32-bit processor is. I was really looking forward to supporting you in this, but I've already waited a month when I can get a 64-bit HP laptop through CDW preinstalled with Red Hat Enterprise any time, and then wipe that for Ubuntu and figure out what drivers I need. (If it needs a USB wireless adapter until I can get drivers for the built-in thing, I have one lying around...) It's a pain, but I'm used to this.

Matthew Flaschen
Thanks again.  I appreciate the fast turnaround time you mentioned in the video.  Hopefully, once you're up and running this can be extended to other machines, more peripherals (with FLOSS drivers),  and Europe.

So is dell going to start contributing to the software projects that are pre-loaded on the pc?

In the article you write <i>"Thanks for giving us a chance to show what Dell 2.0 is about. While this is a milestone that a lot of us will remember, it’s just the beginning—plenty more to come.</i>

Thank you for once again selling Linux Desktops and Notebooks. (You do realize you did this in 1999&2000 too; when Michael Dell gave the keynote at LinuxWorld.)

I just ordered a E1505N.

But note that you would have gotten more money out of me if you had a Ubuntu Latitude D620/D630 available - since I think  that's a nicer computer; but oh well.

The AMD Linux video drivers for >=X1xxx are... deficient in quality.  On the other hand, Intel hired x.org developers and develops open source drivers.  Therefore unless you're doing heavy gaming Intel really is the "smarter choice" and you will have far fewer headaches!

I hope that this is successful enough for AMD to provide similar support - especially since they were cut off from this line entirely.

The E1505 only ships with GMA950 or x1300's so Dell was backed into a corner on this one.  Maybe the next model will have an nVidia option as well.

And I second that it'd be nice to see some geforce 8xxx cards, especially something high end.  But other than that the component selections are very nice and should be quite stable :)

(finally, more kudos for not dumping the last of the Netbust chips in this line too ;) )

Philippe Giguere

Super,

Extend the offer to Europe and I'll buy one... My Pentium III Toshiba running on SimplyMepis is great but it needs replacement.

 Good luck

1. I can't find a link to the Ubuntu computers anywhere!  Yesterday I found them from a link on a blog, today I'm on a different computer, went to dell.com -- now I can't find them!  Um,  don't you WANT to sell me a computer?!?!?!

2.  I want to know if suspend and hibernate work properly before I buy.

3. I'd prefer a laptop with a smaller screen and nVidia graphics card -- I understand you want to test with just one model first, but hope you'll offer the XPS M1210 or even E1405 soon.

Still I'd probably go ahead and get a 1505 if I could just find the thing!  C'mon!

Hi!
I'm using ubuntu since October. Maybe it isn't  realy long time, but never before, any microsoft OS lived so long without re-install.
Usualy I had to spend 2 or 3 days with install cd, windows worked about 3 months, and then it was getting slowly, and more slowly, and more again. If I didn't delete it and installed again, it just stopped work. And i didn't have any another way.

Linux is better operating system, but it isn't very popular. Nearly 4% isn't really much. But You can change it, and as I see - You are doing it!

Well done!

ps: Ubuntu users: don't use Skype - it is the only software I had to press RESET key for. Sorry Skype, you decided we should use Wengophone or Ekiga

Add my voice to the disgruntled Canadians who wonder when this will be available North of the border...

I would have bought one already if I had been able to.

Hi, I am glad that it is launched.

But I would be even happier when these models are also available in Europe. :)

Great move!!

Please make it available in EUROPE and WORLDWIDE,

I'm waiting Dell to offer Ubuntu-based systems in Europe to buy my new notebook!

CAN'T WAIT

BRAVO DELL!!!!!! Keep it Up!

My request for Europe/Switzerland and for India too. As I want to gift an Ubuntu Dell to my dear ones.

That's fantastic news. I can't wait for the offerings to come to Europe - Germany in particular: I'm living in Munich, one of the bigger cities, and public administration has decreed a shift to Linux software. It would be great to have a Dell with an "official" Linux install right out-of-the-box.

I just ordered my XPS with Ubuntu, I'm extremely excited to get it in a week.

A tip to other purchasers use the $350 off promotion. It applies to both the Dimenson and XPS system with ubuntu preinstalled.

Wow, wonder if redmond figured out what that noise was???

It was the bell tolling for them....

Way to go Dell !!!!!

We want Latitude D430/630/830n with Ubuntu and Precision M4300n with RHEL or/and SLED!

IIRC Dell used Redhat Linux some years ago, and shipped in Europe.. Kinda too early or did not catch on.. I was not a fan of RedHat then or now, neither am I a fan of Ubuntu but how come out of all this Dell managed to ship a Linux distro with their machines in europe a few years ago and not now?

But I'll take two of your 30" TFTs if you have them hanging around.. ;p

Linux computers with Windows keyboard :-DDDDDDDDDDDDDD

This is really great!

When can I put in an order for this laptop in Sweden?

Mr. Dell, many thanks for Linux hardware! Best wishes!!!

Congratulations Dell, it seems you've done everything right so far. The selection of hardware components, especially the hard-to-get-right video cards and wireless chipset, is really sensible and makes a good fit for the respective systems. The goodwill is clearly recognizable, by mentioning lobby efforts for in-kernel drivers and working inside the established community structures instead of trying to build a new ecosystem. Really, I'm stoked about how you managed to get this done, Dell is clearly on my list of "non-evil" companies now :D

You might still want to improve the web site a bit: the Vista occurences should be removed from Ubuntu-only customization pages, and the "open" area should somehow be integrated with the rest of the site. Like, the breadcrumb says "You are here: USA > Home & Home Office", but when you click on "Home & Home Office" then there's no way back from there except the back button. Or it's so hidden that I didn't find it. The Ubuntu systems should also be listed among the other Dimension/Inspiron/XPS systems that you find on the "regular" part of the site, although that might require an additional note (like on the "open" main page) so that customers don't expect Windows on it.

If I needed a new laptop and lived in the US, I think I'd buy that Inspiron right away. Unfortunately, my current laptop is hardly half a year old, and I can't recommend those computers to my friends as they're not available in Europe. I make for good publicity in my blog entries though ;)

So, being doomed to watch this undertaking from the distance, I wish you the best of luck in reaching your estimate of sold units. (While I certainly hope they will be surpassed.)

Hello,

I'm sorry I haven't taken the time to thoroughly read all the 133 comments, so maybe somebody did ask the question I am going to ask already and I might have failed to spot it.

I'm completely happy that Dell has decided to start using Linux a bit more. It's time for the unsuspecting users who think they don't have a choice to realize that they do. Of course I daresay I do hope it will all be happening in the EU soon.

Personally, though, I'm not a fan of Ubuntu, so of course, given the possibility, I would get rid of that. However, I need to ask about the drivers. I trust they will be cross-distribution compatible, won't they ? Or that the source code will be made available for people under other distributions to compile (instead of, or rather aside with pre-compiled RPMs for this or that specific distribution - or, even *worse*, locked in some way to only work with specific computers !), which would really be an improvement because just so you know, using Linux on a Dell Inspiron laptop sometimes ends up being a complete mess in terms of drivers. Sooo...  Having been a Linux user on my desktop computer (which is really not branded, I just bought the pieces and built it myself => much cheaper, much more efficient) for many years, I've always been slightly annoyed that no official driver has been available for most laptops. And to be frank I always hated having to pay for an OS licence (Windows OEM : ca. 150 euros = about 1/5 of the final price !) when my first operation is to get rid of the said OS.

So well done Dell but that was just a first step :)

Great! Thanks for a fantastic initiative! Now, bring it to Sweden, so we too can buy these!

Dear Dell, Nice, great, excellent, smart move, I love it. But you still need to pump it up a bit, right. We also want the sexy systems, the tiny optiplexes, the light latitudes and the fancy tablets. Why not equalize the various platforms. Say instead of creating the parallel pariah linux web why not just let us choose between windows and linux on the standard website. Dells main business is hardware so what should Dell care? Dell please inform us what sales percentage it takes to take linux serious. It is quite clear that if Dell is only going to deliver a fraction of the corresponding windows system options the linux market share is going to be equally limited by construction.

Lets see the real work.

For same compter, how much Dell pay Microsoft for a XP OEM?and how much for a VISTA OEM? Then now much Dell pay for a Ubuntu Fiesty?

I do not see that Dell have done great work.

Pre-install Linix is just give a free choice chance to customer, but the trade-off is the price. I do not understand why the same hardware computer with Linux pre-installed is more expensive than with Windows pre-installed. Why? Does Dell is helping Microsoft's fighting against Open Souce?

For Desktop, I prefere buying a bare hardware computer and install Linux myself.  But for notebook, I have no way.   I only can buy the cheap  one  and  get off  windows  system and  install  Linux myself.

I wasn't buying any Dell for my company, mostly HP; this is great news and, as soon as you start selling those in Europe, that's what I'll be ordering. Thanks for supporting Linux seriously.

Running a DELL Inspiron with Ubuntu feisty, which took me some time to get it running (let's just mention "BROADCOM"), I am really glad to hear about this fantastic steps, DELL made.

And yes, Europe has to be the next one.

I think it is important to show this option at the main page as well as making it possible to compare prices of the same products with different OS.

Keep going, DELL!

Thank you very much Dell!

Since I'm in Norway I can't wait for you to ship Ubuntu here in Europe too.

Really really great :)

Why can't I find these machines on the website? There appears to be no way to drill down from the front page to the Ubuntu machines. If I follow the obvious path (Desktops | Home & Home Office | View All Desktops) I get a list of machines all of which are Windows only. Wouldn't I expect the machines to be listed under All Desktops? If not, where? Following other routes does not lead to them either. The only way I can get to the machines is by knowing the www.dell.com/open  URL beforehand, or by repeatedly reloading the front page until I stumble upon the Ubuntu Has Arrived graphic. For a product launch you sure are going out of your way to hide the products.

The E520N looks like you can configure it to be a nice machine though. Now, if it were only available in Canada...

Gr8 job.....Thanks DELL!!

To the people asking why Ubunto should be less expensive than Windows:

Please consider that part of the cost of Windows is offset by the "demo-ware" that comes pre-installed with Windows.  The vendors do pay for this privelege.

Also consider that Dell has gone out of their way to, where possible, include components which have linux driver support.  Note that some of these components may be more expensive than the alternative: components from vendors who only supply Windows drivers, or binary-blob drivers.

Awesome! When is this going to be available in Canada? I want one!

Thanks for the update!  It's great that dell is offering this deal!

Finally, the domination of Microsoft Windows in new computer systems is coming to an end. I would really have preferred to install a bare-bone system by myself, but the fact that Dell is offering Ubuntu as an alternative operating system, is a great move.

This is particularly encouraging because, as far as I am concerned, I am not ready to play around with Windows Vista - it is new, and probably bug prone.

Furthermore, my experience with Dell has been great so far, over the past 4 to 5 years. I do hope to continue my service with them.

Overall, two thumbs up.  I've always wanted to try out linux but wanted a laptop preconfigured with it so the drivers would all work.  My only complaints at this point is no Latitude option and it's a bit tricky to order online because of all the various configuration and strange pricing scenarios.  Dell really does need to simplify their pricing structures.  You can get a different price on the SAME laptop configuration depending on how you navigated the website.  That's ridiculous.

Like I've said before, GREAT GOING, Dell! Just one little nitpick though..... Is there any chance of getting rid of that "Dell recommends Windows Vista Home Premium" business? I mean, at least on the Linux part of the site?

magnificent! I second the penguin/ubuntu branding idea

One week too

I already went out and purchased a new laptop but... I PROMISED MYSELF that i will get an ubuntu based laptop for my next laptop for me or my family. which shouldn't be that far off 6m-1y, i just hope that you still offer it by then.

I configured two identical E520's without using coupons, one with Vista Home Premium and one with Ubuntu. The Ubuntu version was $140 less than the Windows version. Every option cost the same except for the monitors, where for some reason the "No Monitor" option subtracted $130 on the Linux system versus $190 on the Windows system. Despite that, the Linux system was $140 cheaper than the Windows system. Nice!

Well, I was waiting to buy a new laptop.   Sorry, but I don't think this is going to cut it for me.  I priced out almost identical configurations in Windows and Linux.  The Linux laptop cost more than the same thing with Windows.  Why would I buy the Linux laptop when I could just wipe the windows drive and install Linux myself?  The price should not be more than a windows machine, period.

Also, where are the audio and video codecs?  If you want more money for a Linux install than Windows, shouldn't it at least come with the ability to play quicktime, etc?  Yes I can install them myself but then I may as well configure the entire system myself then.

I will not be purchasing one of these under the circumstances pointed out above.  I will not buy a windows one and wipe it either as the game being played here just doesn't sit well with me.

So while I am planning on buying new laptop, now it will not be a Dell.

My next computer will notebook from Dell with Ubuntu :)

Damn that was fast!

Now your next aim is to get it world wide i believe?

I would buy Three instantly if they were available in Australia.

Jonathan Orlev

This is  great news indeed.

I wish you also start selling in Israel. Currently, Dell computers are not available to the private sector, or available for a very high cost.

If someone from Dell is seeing it, please contact me directly:

 Thanks,

Jonathan

Why pay more for Dell with Ubuntu? You can build your own PC with much cheaper price with better quality parts. You can choose the hardware that is compatible with Linux and you can choose any Linux you like to install. Just learn how to build your own PC!!! It's easy!!!

I only buy PCs from Dell with Windows pre-installed because is cheaper than buying Windows separately. And that makes sense! I will never buy Dell with Linux! Period.....

All in all, Dell is still best PC that I like!

GREAT !!!

This is one small step for Dell, one giant leap for Linux desktop adoption, and the linux and open source community will never forget it and reward that !!

 THANK YOU DELL !!

Please, don't forget us in Europe !
W.e...a.r.e...w.a.i.t.i.n.g !

Great - Thanks Dell.  I'm buying a new laptop next week to use ubuntu on - looks like it will be before you start shipping the fiesty pre-installs to the UK, but I'll definately be buying dell now.  Great to know that you're pushing for kernel level hardware support, and I hope (over time) you're able to push it out to more machines and wider audiences.

I'd like to echo what Eric said.  I just customized an Ubuntu Dell notebook and was about to order it when I realized that I hadn't been asked to pick a graphics card.  When I looked at the specs and saw that it was an intel GMA950 I was pretty dissappointed.  I know that as a gamer and game developer under Linux, I'm in the extreme minority, but I'm afraid that intel's intergrated option simply won't do it for me.

I applaud Dell for creating an Ubuntu offering and I'm excited their leadership in "Desktop Linux" with my money.  I'm waiting on Nvidia 7300 option.  On a sidenote, until ATI get's their drivers together (which they claim they are doing), don't bother offering them as an option.

Keep up the good work!

I just went and configured two nearly identical laptops, one linux and one windows. The windows one is $60 less, and has a 256MB X1400 (which makes the price disparity even further).

Here is a printout of the detailed shopping cart.

http://localtoast.org/~steve/stuff/dell.pdf

There is a $500 coupon on the windows system, and a $200 coupon on the linux system. For some reason I can't apply the $500 coupon to the linux system, even though they are both E1505 over a certain amount.

I don't know how much this was mentioned on Ideastorm, but it seems like Dell is always trying to pull some kind of shenanigan with the prices. All the models have these ridiculous base prices (that nobody would ever dream of paying), but there is always some confusing sale going on. Furthermore, customizing the same model to the same configuration yields different prices depending what base configuration you start off with. It seems like you have to do a ridiculous amount of work to ensure that you aren't overpaying because you failed to notice some option that would have saved you $200 for no apparent reason. Whatever happened to simplicity?

These frustrations represent an actual sale. I should have bought a new laptop three weeks ago, but have been putting this off for Dell's linux offering. While I would prefer a 17" screen, I can forgo that to show Dell that there is really interest in linux. However, having the linux model $150 more expensive isn't Dell supporting those who would like to use linux, it's Dell gouging those people.

As I've stated, this is an actual sale. I realize it's just one sale, but indivual sales add up. I would appreciate it if somebody from Dell/linux would contact me about this. I'm not going to wait much longer to buy a machine, and will probably just end up paying the microsoft tax, otherwise.

Great, great news.

But for the love of god, please release them in europe/sweden soon!

the PRICE is the same $$WINDOWS = $$Ubuntu

Awesome.  Dell rocks

Ed Greenberg

Nice. When can we order one? When will delivery be made?

What I'd really like though is a nice Latitude D820 with such support.

I had never purchased anything from Dell before, but after a few failed attempts I was finally able to get my first order through!  I can hardly wait for my new XPS 410n desktop with Ubuntu 7.04 to arrive.

Thank you to Dell management for listening to customers!  And thank you to the engineers at Dell for actually making this happen!

The world is bigger than the US... please!?

The  XPS 410 N option is supposed to be a Powerfull Computer.... So why there is only one option for a Video Card???!!!, The LOW END 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache!!!!!

 Too bad!!!

I just tried to drill down the "customize it" trail and when done, it says it cannot give me a price nor order it for me.  Has this been tested or is the default option the only thing available ?  I was customizing the laptop.

Ubuntu User

"I think Linux is far from being a good desktop OS, and I fear Dell is making a big mistake here."

Have you used Ubuntu?  Its more stable than windows and is very nice its easier to use than windows  I have had 0 crashes using Ubuntu and Lord knows how many using XP I'll give you an idea of how easy Ubuntu is in comparison with say XP My roommate is not at all tech savvy and LOVES Ubuntu because its doesn't crash on her.  she tried using windows XP for a while and asked me to reinstall Ubuntu because she didn't like the windows interface as much

My opinion is that Dell should have focused their efforts in improving things for all of their customers instead of wasting resources just to please a small community that, although very loud and very vocal, are still in minority and will be for a long time to come.

With dell Offering Ubuntu the number of Linux users will grow because people will see that Ubuntu is STABLE unlike Windows.  Vista is really horrible as a Desktop OS because its way too hardware intensive Ubuntu is really a nice change in comparison with Vista. I;ve been using Ubuntu Since Dapper Drake  I have never had any hardware issues or anything with it. I tried Vista on my other Computer and hated it so I'll stick with Ubuntu for now.

Let's see if at least now that their wishes have been granted they put their money where their mouth is.

Yup i'm planning to order 15 or so of them for reintergration and as gifts for family members.

When can I get one with an AMD processor?
