Vista Upgrade, Dimension E521, Sound Blaster Audigy MB Software

Rather than reply to many individual comments and personal e-mails regarding the Dell Vista Express Upgrade, concerns around the Dimension E521, and the Vista version of the Sound Blaster Audigy MB software, I wanted to let people know that we will use the blog to provide updates on all three.

Regarding the Vista upgrade, Dell can help customers who have issues with:
  • The Dell Vista Upgrade site not recognizing their service tag(s)
  • Cerficate of Authenticity (COA) issues
  • Credit Card/ Change of Address issues

About the E521, truth is there's a lot of information I need to get my head around before I comment. I will spend time next this week to review details my colleagues in the Dell Community Forum and others within Dell.

The update on the Vista version of Sound Blaster Audigy MB software has taken longer than I expected. I apologize for that, but will have an update for customers sometime this week.

The purpose of this post is to let Direct2Dell readers know that I'll be working to provide updates on these topics as quickly as possible. In some cases when I'm quiet, I don't have any information to share. Other times, I may be a bit behind in following up on issues Direct2Dell readers raise. Lots of times, the issues can get complicated. That said, I'm not here to make excuses. I appreciate your continued patience, and apologize for any frustration these issues may have caused.

I cannot believe the rubbish service from Dell .My Vista upgrade was lost by the carrier DHL UK on March 21 2007. DHL UK have admitted it is their fault and have informed Dell USA, asking for a replacement for me. So far nothing. Dell customer service are useless  telephone operators who never contact back. After many many calls and emails to Dell they are rarely answered and I still have no resolution, I have been told to contact the carrier, I HAVE many times .They say they cannot help me as Dell is the customer. Why has Dell not contacted me with any help, updates or solution ! It seems that I shall have to resort to either send back my Insprion 6400 or claim in the small claims court for the product that was paid for in November 2006.

Come on sombody at Dell HELP !!

Bob ( Unsatisfied customer)

Not sure if it had anything to do with my earlier comment or not, but for fairness' sake I wanted to report that today I received the Upgrade package.
Thank you very much!
PS A tip for any upgrader - the Dell Install Agent only looks at what preinstalled software needs to be uninstalled/upgraded for Vista - it does not look at the software you may have installed yourself in Windows XP. (Makes sense in a way, since Dell cannot know what you or I install).
Reason I bring this up anyway is that I had a bluescreen during my first upgrade attempt, caused by a driver that is part of the free ZoneAlarm firewall. So, I used the rollback feature (a menu item on the black bootscreen when you do the upgrade routine) and uninstalled ZoneAlarm in XP. The next time, the upgrade to Vista ran OK - it rebooted a few times, but no more blue screen. Just thought it might save someone some time...

Hi,

I was looking for Vista related issues with DELL 521 and came upon this site... so just my 2 cents..

May 1, 2007 I  purchased a DELL E521 with Vista Home Premium installed. I have had nothing but troubles. I am going to return this system and get XP. A DELL supervision suggested I go for XP when they could not resolve my issues. DELL is now offering XP in some of their computers because of so many complaints!

Count your blessings, XP is the best OS at the moment

I wish I could get XP with a Vista upgrade a year from now.

misty

I also bought a E521 in November because of the Upgrade promise and, like many other fellow purchasers, am still waiting for my upgrade kit.
Any info as to
(a) what's the problem with sending the upgrade since you now offer this machine with Vista preinstalled
( I know since you keep bombarding me with Dell email offers to buy a new
computer)
and
(b) WHEN we can truly expect the upgrade kits
would be appreciated.

As an aside - since you seem to have irked a lot of customers everywhere, by not shipping out the kits, perhaps someone should rethink the wisdom or otherwise of annoying non-US customers by giving them 2 weeks less time to apply for the upgrade.
Personally, I take it as a compliment and a tacit admission from your side that Europeans need two weeks less that a US citizen to fill in a form (and I hope I haven't disappointed), but I know a lot of people who see this as another indication of "the US treating everyone that is a non US citizen as a 2nd rate person".
While this may be the case (and it's your prerogative to do so), in this case,
you could have avoided the additional bad vibes generated by it as from the forum comments it seems you (that is DELL, not any of the moderators personally) treat everyone with the same disregard on this issue.

Thank you.

I see the Dell web site selling E321, with genuine Vista Home Premium....

So where is our upgrade?

Yes you cn by starting send in the Vista Upgrade promised when we got our computers and you got our money last year!!!!!

Brian: Here's the way I choose to use the word tool: "A blog as a tool is only as good as the people who support it. "

No one's more aware of that fact than I am. If I have done something (or not done something) to cause that kind of reaction, I apologize.

Otherwise, is there something specific I can help you with?

I have a great suggestion to speed this process.  Start firing and hiring at Dell.  Start with this tool Lionel Menchaca.  Guy started out as a hardware technician, for God's sake.  Anybody remember the Peter Principle?

I have an inspirion e1705.  I did the vista upgrade and now have several problems.

When booting I get a small empty window entitled volume control which I have to manully X out of to get rid of it.

Secondly when booting I get the error loading CTMBHA.dll Invalid Access to memory Location every time.

Any idea what I can do to make these errors go away?  I have the soundblaster audigy MB.  What driver should I use?  I have sound but it has static at times.  Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting?

Lionel,

Didn't see Doug's update until after I posted, and Doug didn't actually post till after my original post. And am fully aware that the application is not a driver, but then again, drivers are software too!! :-)

So basically it boils down to, getting the application out to us loyal customers, and that's all I was voicing to begin with.

So at least this issue looks like its solved.

OT but, been running Vista on my e1505 ever since beta 2-so am very aware of the issues. And all in all, except for this one last app, the e1505 has caused me no issues. Except I did notice that the new bluetooth module is acting funky. The audio sink from CSR works great running audio from the music folder/wmp11, except any other audio source,be it streaming, a dvd, etc. and the audio skips-weird.

Tim the Computer Guy

Give us at least a kernel of information about the Vista Upgrades.

Is it just e521?  other systems delayed as well?   something?  anything?

 Anyone?  Buehler?  :-)

Jeff: Please take a look at Doug Peeler's update post on this topic. Basically, we're getting there—we're working to make the Vista version of the software available for download.

One other note: the Sound Blaster Audigy MB software is not a driver. It's a piece of software that works in conjunction with the integrated Sigmatel audio  hardware to provide additional functionality. Therefore it's more complex than just posting a driver to support.dell.com.

Lionel,

WHY is it that I can go to the Dell website and customize a NEW e1505 WITH Audigy Soundblaster MB, and NOT get one for my already purchased e1505-(which btw- is running Vista Ultimate-np)????

What seems to be the issue here?

In one breath, you say that it's taking longer than expected, yet new customers can get it preinstalled???

Seems to me that if you guys are offering it to new customers-it BETTER be ready, so enough of the excuses, please get the install on the driver page.

Lionel -

I'm sorry, this was my mistake.  You're right, those comments were posted to a different thread in the first place. I'm truely sorry for adding to people's frustration level.

Lionel:

your answer to my april 3 entry about the reason for not releasing XPS710 with Vista was:

Jonathan: The short answer is video card drivers. NVIDIA released version 100.65 in late February. According to the release notes on that page, those drivers are still under development.

The latest driver (version 101.41, released on March 2) is still a beta-level driver.

If this is the true reason, how do you explain that I can configure the 410 on your site with Vista and with the nVidia 8800GTX (which uses those same drivers) ?  why not release Vista on 710 non-SLI ?

Jonathan: Stay tuned—more to come soon.

Kevin -

Post that were made to this tread were moved to comment thread in another blog entry. I don't understand why, but they all appear to be there.

Lionel, I thought I posted in this thread as well as the Feb 28th one. If not my appoligizies. There may be some confusion at the DCF then.  Kevin

Lionel, I beg to differ. Yes you did! I guess your word does'nt mean much?

Kevin: See my above note. Are you looking in the right thread? If so, I didn't see anything in the previous pages of comments that would explain it.

If there are indeed comments that are missing, I'll need to figure out what the problem is.

Did you really remove comments from the Blog??

Why don't you e-mail me directly?

Dan: No, I did not remove any comments that were previously published. Just so you know, I made that comment on a different thread. Hopefully, that explains it.

Thank you very much for the update on the Soundblaster Audigy Advanced MB upgrade for Vista. I hope things go smoothly in the end for all of us that have been waiting so long for the Vista version.

Maury,

At least you got one!!!!

I ordered a system for my folks in November and am still waiting for the Vista disk.

Thankfully it isn't that big of deal as XP is just fine.  But I am curious to play with Vista.

And still not a word back.  I love it.  We should all just go out, purchase retail copies and then mail Dell the bill.  This is ridiculous.  I wonder if I can still return this system...  cross one IT Director off your list guys.

A very sad Steve

Bought my pc last yr (like november) and did the update site right away... #V2020652. I did buy my PC  an XPS410 / Dimension9200 then because Dell told me i would recived my upgrade quick after the Vista release....  I dont have the E521 (with that soundcard who give problems). I repeat, i haveXPS410 / Dimension9200 with the Creative soundblaster X-music.

It's almost mid april and nothing... Still in process... Oh yeah, now the page said all upgrade will be send by end of may.... Why should we believe Dell again... they just keep changing the delay for that...

The sad part, when i go online and check all drivers for my PC for Vista, i can see all of them. All available. So no excuses !!!!

So please send it now because if not, people will be tired and will go buy it in stores and send to Dell the bills.

Got: XPS410 or Dimension9200

I have two business Vista 'express' updates for two XPS 410 on order since 17 December. If you write to the customers service email to ask what is going on you just get a standard reply which does not give you and information.

First off why can you not just offer a download and email with you new Product key or a letter? The promise of whom registered first will get it first is clearly not true as you can read all over the forums.

I live in Germany and although I am waiting for an English language upgrade I have not heard anything. First we Europeans could not register for the upgrade weeks later as the US customers and now we are waiting again. Why?

I ordered two Dell systems. A xps 410 for my son, and a E521 for me. Order dates for the Vista upgrade was 1/25/2007 for the xps, and 2/1/2007 for the E521. The Vista upgrade for the XPS 410 ARRIVED 3/5/2007. My Vista Express Upgrade ordered less than a week later has not arrived. Someone at Dell is lying about the shipping order. Maybe I should order a new E521 with Vista, take the OS disk when it arrives and send the system back................ I'll have to think about that one.

I ordered my Vista Upgrade back in the old times of february 2nd...

I have not received it yet... So...

"customers who ordered in March and February are not affected by this so called "issue" and should have received their copy a few weeks ago."

 Just another lie from Dell...

BTW, I'm in Mexico, I'm closer to Texas than Ohio or wherever upgrades are being shipped from... so.. what's the problem Dell!!?!?!

KEVIN OWENS

Are E521's compatable with Vista?

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=vista&thread.id=23380

Customer has an new E521(5 weeks) with Vista pre-installed from Dell. I'm beginning to wonder.               Thank You

Just phoned up Dell... Again... and now they are telling me that it is DHLs FAULT! First it was ModusLink, then Microsoft and now DHL. The Indian representative who I talked to said that customers who ordered in November and December cannot get their orders processed due to an "issue" with DHL, he also said that customers who ordered in March and February are not affected by this so called "issue" and should have received their copy a few weeks ago.

I would certainly like to know what is this "issue" and why it is affecting the "Express" upgrade to Windows Vista!

I bought my E521 back in August, order the Upgrade when open the express update website, end of November, so we will get our VIsta maybe in July.....LOL

Too bad for Dell!

Why is it so hard for Dell to just tell us what the problem is. The new systems ship with Vista. NO, all they do is extend the delivery date. Shameful to say the least.

KEVIN OWENS
At this point, I'm going to take Lionel on his word. It is now Wednesday. We should be getting a status report on the E521 situation by Friday. If not, there leaves nothing more to be said about Dell's perception of their customer's concerns.  Thank You

So I noticed the Dell Vista Upgrade site now says that all updates won't be shipped until the end of May.  It still says the updates will be shipped in the order they were recieved.

I don't have a warm, fuzzy feeling about Lionel's news for the E521.

Hello, now, if you log on to dellvistapgrade site... It says all Vista orders will be shippid by end of MAY!!!!!!

What's this a late April's fool day joke or what??

Afeter emailing Dell for the millionth time... they told me by mid April..!!! so... I hope it's true..

Dell, you're disappointing me more and more...

I'm running out of time, I need a laptop soon!  I'm going to be stuck buying a System 76 despite the outrageous price differences.

I believe the Customer Service People are a bunch of liers.....

5 times they said the upgrade will ship in 1 week. Is obvious they don't

know, and there must be a great problem with E521.

Too bad they will loose customers, at least I am no longer a happy

Dell buyer

Estuardo

Tomaz,

I feel your pain.  I have been waiting to order a 710 with Vista basically since Vista was released and I agree that the lack of information is quite frustrating.  I personally, would be happy with something as simple as, "We are waiting for x to happen and once x happens, we will reevaluate the situation."

I'm also aware there have been a lot of driver related issues that are beyond Dell's control but most other builders seem to have overcome those issues.  Hopefully Dell will be able to as well and soon.

Thanks

Lionel, can you address why it is April and we still don't have our "Express" Upgrades?  I believe that we're moving into month four of "time beyond which  we should have had out Upgrade Kits".  I mean, really - what happened over there guys?

Jonathan Cirillo

The comment by Tomaz above couldn't be more right.   Since before the release of Vista in January, I have been dreaming of my XPS710 with Vista, and I was disappointed then, that it was not available right away.  we are now in the 3rd month after release and I was soooooo frustrated that Dell doesn't provide any explanation for the delay.  The Soundblaster audigy driver can't explain everything, Right now, if my budget was a bit larger than what I am planning to spend on an XPS710 with Vista, I could buy an equivalent system (with higher speed memory, but more expensive), with Vista pre-loaded, from Alienware, Gateway, NorthWest Falcon and Voodoo.  I could even get the 30' HP monitor that uses the same panel as the 3007WFP-HC (with 2 more DVI inputs), for the same price.  Because I have always had Dells, I am still waiting a bit, but if Dell keeps silent on the reason for the delay, I'm almost ready to "jump ship" and buy one of these other systems.  Come on, Lionel, what's the story ?  What prevents dell from offering what everybody else offers ?

Jonathan: The short answer is video card drivers. NVIDIA released version 100.65 in late February. According to the release notes on that page, those drivers are still under development.

The latest driver (version 101.41, released on March 2) is still a beta-level driver.

KEVIN OWENS

Lionel, Thank you the information. Any information is greatly appreaciated reguarding the hold up on our Vista upgrades. It should be noted that ignoring customer inquires about their concerns for which the lack of information provided by Dell has produced this situation. All that we have asked for is information reguarding our products purchased from Dell. My sinceriest thanks for being the only Dell representitive not stonewalling the issue. Please keep us posted and once again Thank You.

                                                                    Kevin Owens

Dan:

I do mean this week. It was late when I wrote the post. More to come.

Is the Sound Blaster Audigy driver the reason why Dell is not yet shipping XPS 710 with Vista? If not, what is holding THAT back?

I've been waiting since March 15th to order an XPS710 with Vista... I don't mind the wait TOO much (well, I do, but what can I do?) What does bug me is the complete lack of information about what is holding it back and when can I expect that to occur.

My concern is that if Dell is not sharing those details, that probably means there could be significant delays, which will of course drive business elsewhere. As a business person, I get it, but I cannot accept that as a customer.

Thanks

Great Lionel, we look forward to finding out whats really going on with the E521.  Hopefully when you say you'll spend time next week you mean this week and it really means in the next day or two.

For Dell to have held up these updates you've had to know the reason for a while. You personally may not have known anything, I honestly appreciate the information you have provided.  However, the issues are understood by someone at Dell.  Just be honest with us and let us know the remedy as quickly as possible.

You can probably tell we're frustrated.

Tim The Computer Guy

Thank You Lionel.

That is all that we have been asking for, is INFORMATION.   Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated by all of us.
