Dell Launches the EC280 for Chinese Consumers

Dell unveiled the EC280, a small desktop PC developed for first-time buyers and users seeking basic productivity, online and multimedia functionality. The system was designed and developed by engineers at Dell's China Design Center located in Shanghai. Right now, it will only be sold in China, and the base configuration costs around $310 $335 US dollars. Note: My conversion was off a bit—my apologies.

Last year, the Internet reached over 1 billion users worldwide. An impressive number, but still only a small part of the earth's global population. Many of those users who make up the next billion users will be in China.

Because it's built around a Mini-iTX motherboard, the system is about one-eighth the size of a standard ATX case. It's low-power consumption helps ensure quiet operation.

Dell China will offer the EC280 in two different configurations and three different monitor choices. Customers can opt for no monitor as well. Both configurations support an Intel processor 205 and a 65W power supply, 256MB or 512MB RAM, 40 - 80GB hard drive, CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive options. Both configurations come pre-loaded with Windows XP Home

Any plans to launch in Mexico. I need 50 those pc's

Any plans to launch it in India. I would buy two of those if you do.It would be really good if this was available with some linux (preferably ubuntu) flavor.

: D hope to see it soon in India.

I use what is probably the exact same motherboard in a small home firewall/webserver appliance.  While not powerful by todays standards, the box is really quite impressive, and is easily powerful enough to handle windows or linux, and perhaps the occasional internet flash game, or movie.

I live in the USA, and I'd definitely buy one.  I could really use a nice, cheap media center pc, adn this would really fit the bill :D

I would buy one of these tommorow if it was available, exactly what I'm after, and way less electricity than most desktops.

I run a small home server. It has a web page for a non-profit game modification that I maintain, some email services, and it's my home print queue server. Currently my server is a full tower with full tower power requirements. It doesn't need to be so large and a system like this would be perfect for me. I've been looking for a Mini-ITX computer. If you sell it in the USA, I'm sure you'll find buyers!

What a cracking design! This is exactly what I would be looking for in a home PC. The only item I would want to check is some form of hardware acceleration for MPEG2/4 in H/W, to keep this a small, quiet and efficient operation.

You do want to sell it in Europe, come on, admit it. It would certainly give the Mac Mini a good run for its money!

Are there plans to include a flash memory card reader to transfer my photographs?

Prices reasonable, but it may not quite Performance

will it be loaded with the linux distribution that will win the survey?

wam: No. The EC280 will come with Windows XP Home pre-installed.

An attractive looking computer.

While most of us (USA) will not want such a basic computer, I am sure there is a market in the USA for such a computer.  Any plans to introduce the computer in the USA?

StevenD: Glad you like the design. No US plans right now—it is available to customers in China.

And why not in Europe?

It is largely sufficient for my sister, my mother and my grand-father.

Without Windows, it vould be the best and it could interest me for a second PC.

I think that this is a great idea Lionel! It is a very smart move to contextualize Dell's message. When I lived and  traveled thoughout China, people loved it that some American actually took the time to learn their language. I am looking forward to reading the posts that are written in Chinese.
