Something Vista This Way Comes

Later today, Microsoft announces availability of Windows Vista and Office 2007. Kevin Rollins and Alex Gruzen, our senior VP of the Consumer Product Group will be on hand at the event in New York City. You can tune into a webcast of Microsoft's event beginning at 4:45pm EST.

Dell will begin shipping notebooks and desktops tomorrow (Tuesday, January 30) on all but two of our Dimension desktop and Inspiron notebook products. To answer questions from Direct2Dell readers Reggie and Noel Burke: unfortunately, we won't be shipping Vista right away on the XPS 710 and the XPS 710 H2C. We still have more testing and optimization on high-end graphics card drivers left to do.

Update: Beyond graphics card drivers, we're still working through testing Vista compatibility with some gaming software and certain gaming peripherals.

In my post over the weekend, I mentioned that we will ship Vista in the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese. We expect to ship additional languages over the next couple of weeks and beyond.

Lastly, wanted to include this vlog from Daniel Judd, who's blogged about Vista system requirements and is part of the Dell team that's launching it. He touches on some of the testing Dell has done leading up to this launch and also highlights some of the features he likes in the new OS.

 More on Vista tomorrow.

Vista is not supporting a lot files. Dell should keep XP going.

Vista is still in its diapers and needs to grow up

Networks: We still offer several some desktops and laptops with Windows XP installed.

From the Home & Home Office section main page, look for this logo:

I've added a hyperlink to that image that will get you to that main page.

Question:  What happened to the program to downgrade from Vista to XP?

One thing that pisses me off about this is the Vendors telling people their pc is Incompatible with XP.

This is simply not true, What is true is they are only making drivers for Vista. Why? Its failing, and users have to be forced into vista so ms doesn't look like a fool like Windows ME. Sad thing is any tech knows Vista is a piece of garbage, and any tech that disagrees either hasn't dealt with vista, doesn't know vista, or is paid to say vista is great.

btw. 2gb of ram to make vista tolerable

4gb of ram to make vista perform decently.

Seems to me that XP could get the same performance with 75% less ram.

Also Direct X 10 gamers experienced a 20-30% performance drop with the impressive Vista..

Give me a break.
Shame on you Microsoft and your DRM.

I bought my Inspiron 1501 last February just after it started shipping with Vista -- and just before the genuises at Dell decided to offer XP again as an option. I didn't know any better at the time, but Vista has been nothing for me but a huge incompatibility headache. I had to "laugh" at that Dell executive who said Dell customers wanted the latest and greatest of everything. No, Mr. Executive, most people just want a computer that just works without a lot of headaches and additional expenses. When you look at all the peripherals and software you'll need to replace (if you can!) Vista is about as bad as having a computer that's so out-of-date that hardly anybody supports it. (Oh, yeah, did I mention the brilliant ExpressCard decision?) That guy should be fired, and I'm serious about that -- I will never buy another Dell just because of my experiences with this laptop. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in Vista that users need so badly that they should be willing to give up so much to get it, and Dell executives SHOULD have known that, if they had any common sense at all. Stop letting Bill Gates make your decisions for you!

Dr. Ross: Sorry to hear that you've had some software compatibility problems with Vista.

Will you please submit another comment and with the e-mail address field completed? From there, I can have someone from Customer Care contact you to see what we can do.

Dr. Michael Ross

I have had all of the problems previously noted concerning Vista on my 4 month old Inspiron 1720.  I have suffered enough with incompatability problems, crashes and important business programs not funcioning correctly.  I'm considering a xxxxx  xxxxxx xxx xxxx.  I have contacted Dell about downgrading to XP and was told to buy it myself!  If I ran my business like this, I'd never get referrals.  I'm supposed to get a call from an upper management person.  I'll let everyone know what happens, but I'm not holding my breath.

I can't tell you how much valuable time and data I've lost trying to use this computer.  This is probably my tenth Dell computer in the last ten years and the first time I've had a problem like this.  Dell needs to do the right thing.  Send us a replacement CD for XP Professional!

Is it possible to downgrade to XP ?

I do not want Vista on either of my two new Inspiron laptops but the sales rep could not sell me a downgraded machine.

I was told by others that Microsoft is offering users of newly purchased Vista the right to downgrade to XP.  However neither Dell nor Microsoft's website are any help in this area.

Is my only option to go out to my local computer shop and buy a new copy of Windows XP ?

Can I order a copy of Windows XP for my new PC's ?  I am willing to pay to avoid Vista.

New Dell Inspiron came with Vista.  Nightmare!!! I'm not a geek by any stretch.  Just needed a machine to store, manipulate and burn images.  Dell  gives me the runaround.  Microsoft says talk to Dell.  I just want a free downgrade to XP Pro.  Help!!

Exclusive to Dell Small Business since 1994, I've purchased numerous desktops, notebooks, AIO and color laser printers. I attempted to order a Inspiron 1705 with XP in Feb 2007 and was told that XP was no longer available. Vista is not support by the insurance carriers that I work with. I purchased a similar product with XP from another company with a free update to Vista.

Thanks, Dell

I have a Dell XPS 710 , Thank God I was able to purchase it with XP Pro !

Wayne:
Install  Ubuntu on it!

Or wait for April 19 for the Feisty Fawn (7.04) version of Ubuntu.

I recently purchased an Inspiron 6400 laptop for both business and personal use... I was praying for XP to be loaded on it, but unfortunatly got good ol' Vista... can anyone tell me how to downgrade Vista to XP? i cant stand this bloody o/s... its so useless! im almost at the point im ready to say screw the warranty on this laptop and just pay it out of my own pocket to get my problem dealt with, but i rather try to on my own first.

all help is greatly appreciated!

 THANKS!!

I really wanted to buy a new Dell, but was told  the only way was was with Vista, I guess i'll stay with my old computer with XP.

Look I'm no genius, but Vista is not worth beans, nothing works with it, it not compatable with anything. You have great products keep them that way and dump Vista  PLEASE !!!

Something Vista comes this way?

When!?!

You suggested mid-March, it's now nearly mid-April and not a peep out of Dell regarding Vista on the XPS710.

To add insult to injury, you boast about Vista on your XPS710 spec page:

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_710?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Can we please get an update?  What is going wrong?

Molly: Sorry to hear about the memory issues you're facing with the M1710. I'll have someone from Tech Support follow up with you to see if we can get to the bottom of it.

My Dell and Vista experience has not exactly been a good one.  I have been a strong supporter of Dell products for many years.  Recently I purchased a Dell XPS M1710 laptop which shipped with XP loaded.  Three days later it began malfunctioning.  After several conversations with Dell support and parts shipped to me it was determined that the laptop should be replaced.  I received a replacement which has Vista loaded on it.  I did not want Vista as I can not run work related applications on Vista.  Today I started receiving pop-up messages "Your system is low on memory".  This laptop has 2GB of RAM and all I have running is IE and Dreamweaver.  The problem with the first laptop was a memory problem.

Frank,

I have been trying o decide to buy a new computer. I have SONSAR 6.0 and TASCAM US-122L. Based on your comment I may get an iMAC instead of a PC. My current laptop is not powerful enought to avoid the occaisonal audio dropout.

Just got a new Dell Dimension e520 with Vista Home Basic. Cubase and my sound input box (Tascam us-122) do not work.

Tried to install Windows XP Pro so I can get running again. BSOD when I try to boot from Windows XP install disc. Dell tech support says that my system is incompatible with XP. No exchange option. My only choice is to return the box for refund.

My first and last Dell experience.

I would love to just have my Dual Core Dell with XP SP2. Why must it be so difficult???!

Any updates on the progress of Vista compatibility testing?  Are you still on track for a mid-March launch?

Cheers,

Stephen.

This is a mistake.

Dell should not have obsoleted XP for their new systems. My new Inspirion 6400 came with Vista Basic pre-installed, and I could not even install 60% of my current applications which I use in a production environment.

I have tried to work with Vista, but as it is right now it is simply not possible. I have decided to wipe the disk, and reinstall XP cleanly. Now I can at least work with my new laptop, and am very pleased with it.

This bold move by Dell will move customers away.

Um...yeah dotz wut ah wuz wonderin. Microsof takez atleaz a yea to fix dere issuez wid every new Operatin' system. Tiz reely a pain if ya get vista installed in ur systemz now.

I can understand why Dell is pushing Vista so hard, increased hardware sales and probably some marketing $$$ from Microsoft. But it's a big risk to the Dell brand being associated with Vista and it's bugs and overuse of system resources for DRM and other non Customer Experience functions.

Gamers spend a lot of money on systems and if Vista is slower, they will abandon it and anyone who sells machines with it pre-installed. Microsoft doesnt really care about PC gaming anymore, the Xbox is their strategy now. Killing PC gaming would be just fine, more Xbox sales. They get a cut from every Xbox game sold. And they get the all important Living Room market.

 Where does this leave Dell?

TomD: Sorry for the delay. Take a look at what Extremetech says about Vista as a gaming platform. Bottom line, after driver optimization for high-end graphics cards and other peripherals happen, they seem to think Vista will offer gamers quite a bit. No question games written for DX10 will look great. Brian's blogged about consoles vs. gaming PCs, and I agree with him in a lot of ways. PCs have a hardware advantage over consoles in terms of overall performance capability.

Personally, I have an Xbox 360 connected in the living room. I'm impressed with its capabilities. While I do play some games on it, I get the most use out of it as a Media Center Extender when I stream live and recorded HDTV, music, photos and videos. All of that content is stored on my Dimension 8400. Vista makes the Extender model work even smoother than it did in MCE 2005 in my experience.

Most importantly though, a high-end gaming PC can handle just about any  PC task with ease. If you have lots of memory, a fast processor and video card(s) and lots of hard drive space, you're well-suited to handle video editing, running multiple monitors at high resolutions, or streaming and recording lots of HD content to other rooms in the house. In my view, because of this versatility, a gaming PC still has a solid place in the future.

Count how many times he says "actually" in this clip.

It's actually surprising how many of these blogs are actually so poorly put together and edited.   When actually with some simple editing and effort they could actually be really good.  Actually.

Ivor: Actually, thanks for the feedback. Just so you know, almost every vlog on Direct2Dell is unedited. If your looking for more polished videos on Vista-related topics (or something else), I encourage you to take a look at StudioDell.

Here's a blog post about StudioDell that links to several videos if you're interested.

Just another customer waiting for the 710 to be Vista pre-installed.  I can wait,  but I'm going to go off the deep-end if I have to wait much longer  :)

I've been holding off my PC purchase for a year, and am chomping at the bit to get an XPS 710 with Vista pre-installed.  I'm very dissapointed Dell didn't have it available for Jan 30th, but at least I now know why - thank you for the update.

Roll-on mid March.

Has Dell gone mad?!

I visited the Dell.ca online store this morning, and found only Vista available for business class notebook computers.

It will be at least a year before I recommend Windows Vista to any of my clients.

Today, I am recommending a new notebook for a client. The purchasing decision will be made next Tuesday. Dell has just been struck from the list.

Lionel: Thanks for the feedback on both vista availability and Blu ray. Much appreciated.

Confused: To be fair to dell on this, the delay really isn't thier fault. The blame really lays solely at the doorstep of Nvidia and Microsoft for not having direct X10 vista compatible graphics drivers ready for launch. The first beta driver from nvidia was released today (and it still doesnt support SLI) so I would not be surprised if the dell testing is at a very early stage and may still be several weeks away, (prob looking at early-mid march?). Hopefully it will co-incide with availability of blu ray on Dell desktops. To be perfectly honest, you REALLY dont want to be on the first wave of the Vista roll out, and a few more weeks should see a lot of critical unforeseen issues corrected. Nividia has posted the beta driver on its official site (included below) if you want to verify the info.

 http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.54.html

p.s. I would agree with you to steer clear of the vista upgrade path being put on offer, as from what I can gather about microsofts new licensing  agreement is that for upgrades, you can only do a vista clean install once when upgrading from XP and that you will be prevented from performing clean re-installs once vista has been sucessfully installled. (i frequently do a clean reinstalls as i find them a far more effective way to improve PC performance after  6-12 months of operation, so that is way i want a full OEM copy rather than an upgrade version).

yes, me too! I want to buy the XPS with Vista, not with XP ... I can't wait for trouble, crashes and missing drivers....!

for a good crash you need a good machine ;)

Can you give us *some* idea on how long it will take to ship the high end XPS systems with Vista? Is it going to be days, weeks or months? We are looking to purchase three of them, but want to wait until Vista and Office '07 are ready.

Thanks

What about the XPS 700 series with SLI. There is no SLI driver with Vista....

Kong57: Hope to have more info for XPS 700 customers soon.

Why not the dutch version??
