Shortest Direct2Dell Post Ever

Just a little while ago, we started taking orders of systems with Windows Vista. Initial roll-out of systems with Vista will be in English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese.

Here's the link for a Dell desktop with Vista; here's the link for a Dell notebook with Vista

More details next week.

I succeeded with 1-G Ram. (2-G was failed.)

I think David is right, and it should be working for others.

Good luck!

I am trying to install XP64 on my XPS710 but keep on getting Blue Sreen STOP 0x0000007B Errors.  I have tryed everything, even tryed what David Chernicoff said but still no luck.

Can anyone please help

To install Vista x64 on your 710:

1. Remove any USB devices (other than mouse / keyboard)

2. Remove any memory in excess of 2 GB

3. Install Vista x64

4. Goto http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 and download the 64-it patch

5. Apply patch to your x64 Vista installation

6. Re-install your memory

7. Re-connect your USB devices

That should do it; it worked for me.

Dell's xps 710 h2c will not support 64 bit Vista or XP for that matter,  I have been trying every work around I can think of or find on the interweb.  It has to do with the dell bios even though the chipset supports intel's em64t tech.  Trying to install 64 bit will only result in bluescreen, and Dell does not seem to know when they will have a fix.

Anyone have any word on the compatibility of Dell's 710 H2C with Vista 64-bit?  If so, what are the issues with compatibility and do you have any insight on what Dell is going to do, if anything, to help thier XPS customers with information on how to install the OS.  My main concern is addressing (simultaneously) more than the 2.75 gbs that a 32-bit system currently addresses.

Is there any update on Vista compatibility with XPS 710?

Robert L. Murphy
Dell does not sell Windows Vista 64-bit.  You can buy 64-bit CPUs from Dell all day but if you want Vista 64-bit you have to buy it separately and not through Dell.

Thanks Lionel,

It is 11 PM Eastern and the Vista option is already posted.  32 bit Vista Ultimate is an option.  Well Done.  64 bit is going to be available when......?

I am frothing at the mouth, pawing at the ground, ready to pounce.  I get the first Vista system in the office!

StevenD:

Please check the SMB website tomorrow for Vista. More to come...

I have credit card in hand and am ready to buy.

Any information ready to be released?

Is there an update of information forthcoming?

I have been watching the small business website.  Optiplex and Workstations do not yet have Vista as an option.  I realize that additional testing may be required for these systems.  But does anybody know when the testing may be complete?  I have credit card in hand and am ready to buy.

Sorry...my post should say that Optiplexes can currently only be configured with XP.

Do you know when Vista will be an option on Optiplex desktops?  Currently, they can only be configured with Vista..

Also, as the poster above mentioned, will the systems ship with the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows Vista?

Windows VISTA is apparently also incompatible with any configuration of an Dimension E520 order code 4819F3.  This time the error does not show up until you get to cnfirm and add to cart.

dale hartmann
If you try to put a XPS410 in the cart with the green shaded drive selection you can not an the same error msg shows up.

One more question.   Will 64 bit be a standard offering?  Or is 32 bit going to be the only version offered?

StevenD: Don't know the answer to either question. Will look into both and let you know.

And will the Vista Ultimate be available for small business buyers?

Dale: I was also able to replicate your issue but when i went onto another section and went back to the drive selection, the compatibility warning disappeared. Hopefully its a glitch in the website, rahter than a true compatibly issue.

Reggie: I dont think there is any hope of the xps710 coming with vista on launch day. To me this is a huge disappointment, given that it is dells flagship (and most expensive) home desktop. The drivers for the Geforce 8800 have been very poor in beta tests even as late as two weeks ago according to various IT websites, so Dell has prob only recieved the vista driver last week. Its a reall question of how soon Dell can do whatever testing they need to do prior to releasing it to public. Also I cannot undertsand why blu ray is not available for the xps710 in light of the massive vista hardware testing that was performed and also availability on other XPS notebooks. Hopefully Lionel can shed some light on these two items, as i know there are a lot of people just waiting for the green light to make a purchase once the facts about availablity are known.

You also get the error if you try configuring an Inspiron E1505 with an external TV tuner.  Whether you chose Vista Home Premium or Vista Business it won't let you continue saying that Media Edition is required with a tuner.

dale hartmann
Specifically, if you choose the green shaded dual optical drive option an error box appears stating that VISTA does not support this.

When will the Vista computers be rolled out for the small business community to order?

StevenD: We started offering Vista Home Basic and Vista Business on all Dimension desktops and Inspiron notebooks in the Small Business section of our website over the weekend as well. XPS notebook customers can choose between Vista Home Premium and Vista Business.

Hi Lionel,

No one can tell me when Vista Ultimate will be preloaded for the XPS 710...do you have any idea?

Hi Lionel,

Just to follow up on this, on the irish website the only PC with availability is DimensionTM E520

Also, I seem to have understated the amoung for adding Microsoft® Office 2007 Home and Student to DimensionTM E520. The actual amount is € 1,209,974.59! prob the most expensive MS software ever and its not even the professsional version :) The link is below If you want to check it out. Quite amusing... unless you want MS office 20007 of course...

Noel: Oops! Thanks for bringing the pricing error to our attention. It's been fixed.

Hi lional,

I dont suppose you had a chance to follow up on the blu ray drive and vista availability for the xps 710 h2c. I have had no luck in getting this information with any of the dell sales team who seem to be unaware of this, even though it was mentioned in studio dell as a configurable item.

By the way, in ireland, the selection of vista PCs is very poor, currently only one. When i did go through the configuration options for that one PC, it was adding 14,000 euros for a student version of microsoft office! Cant see too many people taking up that dell deal!

Regards,

Noel

Noel: More on Vista on the 710 H2C tomorrow. As for Blu-ray availability: unfortunately, it won't come until later. Can't share more definitive details, but it's going to be several weeks away at this point.

The specific problem occurs when one selects the dual drive option with the green shading.

dale hartmann
If you select the dual drive option in the green shading then the configuration tool will get trapped in the not compatible with VISTA loop.

dale hartmann
I have been trying to configure an XPS 410.

Dale: Thanks for the heads up. Can you tell me which system you're trying to build?  I've tried a few desktop configs, and they all seem to work okay.

Thanks in advance.

dale hartmann

I find it interesting that you are shipping systems with VISTA when I can not order one from your website.  ANY configuration generates an error that VISTA is not compatible with BASIC options or VISTA is not comapatible with selected optical drive.

So my question is if VISTA is not compatible with the basic option or the optical drive AND you only offer VISTA WHY are the selections on the site?

AND you have no webmaster contact listed on your site.  So in case you are wondering why no one is ordering computers form you....now you know!
