Michael @ CES: Tech Trends, New Products, and StudioDell

This Gear Up video kicked off Michael's CES 2007 keynote. During his speech, Michael called out two trends leading into the next phase of consumer electronics: tighter hardware and software integration that results in better ease of use and the impact of forthcoming  fiber-speed networks.

Now for the products:

High-end 27" Widescreen Display
The 27" 2707WFP widscreen display brings  a 92% color gamut functionality , a 6ms response time, a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200, and a DVI port that is HDCP-capable into a streamlined silver bezel with black removeable base. For graphics professionals, photographers, video producers, gamers, bloggers, or anyone else who needs lots of screen real estate for what they do.


Affordable 22" Widescreen Display
The E228WFP is our new 22" widescreen display. Most notably, price = $329. Other stuff: it sports a 5ms response time, a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050 and like the 2707WFP, an HDCP-capable DVI port.



Liquid-cooled XPS 710 H2C
The XPS 710 H2C is Dell's first liquid-cooled desktop. It utilizes a two-stage cooling process that utilizes a liquid-to-air heat exchanger to remove much of the heat from the processor. From there, a fluid chiller removes more of the processor heat with ceramic-based thermoelectric cooling (TEC) modules. This cooling system allows Dell to ship the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 processor overclocked to 3.2GHz. Based on the XPS 710, it also supports dual 8800 GTX graphics cards in SLI mode. Beginning today, we'll also offer the 8800 GTX card as an option in the standard XPS 710. We will post a more definitive overview soon.



Dell Home Media Suite:
This bundle of products, based on the XPS 410, allows customers to serve all their media content to other locations in the house. The ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner lets customers stream over-the-air HD, premium digital cable HD content (like ESPN, HBO, etc.). Cable Card is also supported. Dell worked with Microsoft, ATI, Digital Keystone and Cable Labs to bring this HD solution to market.  Beyond the tuner, the bundle includes a Core 2 processor, 2GB RAM, 1 terabyte RAID array, 2707WFP monitor, a Linksys pre-N router, and a Linksys power line bridge.

StudioDell Hits the Airwaves
StudioDell is a new digital media network that includes informative videos on a broad range of technology topics and user experiences. 

The RSS-enabled site, www.studiodell.com, includes content focused on three "channels"—Home, Small Business and IT Pro.  Episodes will cover tech tips, case studies and news designed to help customers get more out of their Dell hardware.

The XPS 410 is Available now, and that's great.

However forcing a $500 BluRay player on me is leading me towards purchasing an HP! 

If these systems aren't flying out the door. Don't think it's for lack of demain.  I am waiting to see what the market does with this, hopefully there will be a more Theater System friendly case and Non BluRay option from Dell.

What is the status of the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner?   I just configured an XPS 410 and the ATI HD cable card tuner is not an option. 

What happened to the Dell Home Media Suite that was announced?  How do we get the new ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner?  It is my understanding it has to be purchased through an OEM with a PC purchase.

I'm debating on a XPS 410 for gaming and multimedia work.  I like to find out if you can upgrade the CPU for the XPS 410 later on after the purchase? 

Perhaps after Intel has introduce some newer CPU's and the E6600/ E6700 has dropped in price. 

If possible, does the BIOS / CMOS need to be updated as well?

It is nice to see new product but does the sales staff know about any of it.  Dell has a new 30" LCD flat monitor HC, that has been reviewed in two major tech articles, and every person I talk to does not have a clue.  Dell is even offering this new monitor as a prize to gamers entering into a benchmarking contest.

 After three attempts to see when this product will be available I give up.  If Dell wishes to regain customers this is not the way to sell new products.  I hope with Michael Dell coming back Dell can get its act back together.

When will the XPS 410 Home Media Suite machine be available?  Will I be able to unbundle some of the components?  For instance, I already have a Dell 27" monitor.

Re: the E228WFP monitor. Looks like a nice bit of kit. I know I shouldn't be surprised about the increased cost of goods in the UK but even I was surprised by this.

On the US site, the monitor is currently listed (including tax and delivery) for $319. The exact same monitor is on the UK site for £307. In simple terms, people in the UK are being asked for pay $600 for an item that costs only $319 for consumers in the US. Almost twice the price! Can that be fair, can that be right??

I'll wait a couple of more days to see some more coments...this one's much more impressive that the previous systems...poor christmas-XPS710 shoppers....

Hi Lionel,

Just wondering if you had a chance to look into my earlier queries above. I am hoping to buy the H2C if blu ray is coming out in the near future or would need any additional hardware (apart from the blue ray drive and HDCP monitor) to play official blu ray movies in HD.

I just purchased an XPS 700 and it's a huge investment.. I just hope I didn't get shafted by not waiting and getting an XPS 710.

Good To Hear "We're not done with the XPS 700. Will share details when I have them", This Shows Dell Trying To Help (Even Knows It Taking A Long Time). Also I Would Like To See The "OLD" XPS 700 Do New Tricks (Up To You What They Are LOL).

 Hello,

The overclocking and Geforce 8800 makes the XPS 710 H2C almost an irresistrable buy and unchallenged in power. Well done.

The only concerns which may put me off this PC is that when compared to Alienware's 7500 (a subsidary of Dell). It offers the nforce 680 Chipset and an option for a Blu-Ray writer.

To this end and to help me in making an informed purchase, I have 3 questions:

Firstly is there a plan to upgrade the 710 XPS H2C to a nforce 680 chipset in the near future. (i.e. within 1-2 months)

Secondly, is there a plan in the near future. (i.e. within 1-2 months) to make a blu-ray writer an optional configuration worldwide for this system similar to options from other PC makers (and even some Dell XPS laptop systems)

Thirdly, if i purchase a XPS 710 H2C and install a blu ray drive into it, will any additional chip/equipment need to be bought to play blu ray movies aside from a HDCP compliant monitor which I have already bought from dell within the last month?

The bezel looks the same, the location of the power button appers to be the same, the doors hide the eject buttons when they open, the same, I wonder if the ease operation and reliability was improved at all. On the other hand, I like the concept of liquid cooling and I would love to purchase a retrofit for the 700 if it was available.

Pointguard: Thanks for the initial positive reaction. We're not done with the XPS 700. Will share details when I have them. I used the 710 H2C liquid-cooled system for thirty minutes today... ran several video streams, system was really quiet.

Very nice machine.  I love the direction Dell is heading with the gaming systems.  It seems Dell learned a great lesson with the XPS700.  The new 710 is almost everything we wanted.  It is WAY past time to ditch the OLD 590 chipset.  I do think it is ashamed that the XPS700 owners became the beta testers so the 710 and 800 systems could be so much better.  I still hope a path will be made to upgrade components in the 700(mobo, H2 cooling unit).  I can't wait to see what Dell does next.  Great move with the H2 cooloing.
